Great Pennsic War
Barony-Marche of the Debatable Lands


Being the Report of the Progress of Their Majesties, Malcolm and  Tessa, King and Queen of Æthelmearc throughout the Thirty-fifth Great  Pennsic War, and of the Business done by Their Majesties upon Their  travels, with Their Highnesses, Christopher and Morgen, and the  Landed Nobility of the Kingdom of Æthelmearc in attendance from time  to time.  Court held August 13 through 20, AS 41 (2006) at the times  and places given below at the Great Pennsic War. Giulietta da  Venezia, Reporting Herald, with the assistance at various times of  His Excellency, Sir Haakon Oaktall, His Excellency, Sir Jehan de la  Marche, THLady Matilda Bosvyle de Belle Acqua, THLord Cadell Blaidd  Du, Lady Alessandra Bentivegna da Faenza (called Yasmina), Her  Excellency, Ekaterina Volkova, and Lady Sara de Lindley, Silent Herald.

Their Majesties opened Their Court upon the thirteenth day of August,  immediately following the Opening Ceremonies and called to Themselves  the Companions of the Most Noble Order of the Laurel there present.   Their Majesties asked THLord Valgardr Gunnarsson to attend Them,  whereupon They asked the Companions of the Laurel to counsel Valgardr  properly that he might return before Them upon Tuesday next for the  purpose of answering the question whether he would accept elevation  to said Order.

Their Majesties then progressed upon the evening of same day unto a  Bardic Circle held in the encampment of the Barony-Marche of the  Debatable Lands.  There, His Excellency, Sir Haakon Oaktall, did beg  a boon of Them, and asked Them to honor a lady whom he much esteemed,  and who had given much service to the Great Pennsic War over the  years.  Their Majesties asked to be attended by the Companions of the  Most Noble Order of the Pelican there present, and also asked Sir  Haakon to call forth Her Excellency, Mistress Morgana bro Morganwg,  of the Kingdom of Ealdormere.  Their Majesties of Æthelmearc were  then joined by Their Majesties, Aaron and Rustique, King and Queen of  Ealdormere, who expressed Their pleasure at seeing Their subject so  honored.  Mistress Morgana did protest that she was unworthy to join  such an august body, whereupon Their Majesties asked to hear the  counsel of various persons regarding Morgana's worthiness.  After  hearing the words of His Excellency, Sir Barak Elandris Bear the  Wallsbane; Her Grace, Sir Rowan de la Garnisson; Master Andrixos  Seljukroctonis of Calontir; Mistress Elena de Vexen of the Middle;  Her Excellency, Mistress Graidhne ni Ruaidh; Master Aaron Faheud  Swiftrunner; Baron Oakhammer of Rising Waters; and His Excellency,  Sir Haakon Oaktall, Mistress Morgana noted that she had given up her  futile resistance, and would accept the accolade proposed by Their  Majesties.  Being pleased with all that had transpired, Their  Majesties of Æthelmearc, with the consent of Their Majesties of  Ealdormere, did create Morgana bro Morganwg a Companion of the Order  of the Pelican.  Scroll to be forthcoming.

Their Majesties next traveled to the battlefield upon Monday, the  fourteenth day of August, in the company of the Æthelmearc rapier  army.  After being warmly welcomed by Their Eastern allies, Their  Majesties called forth the Companions of the White Scarf there  present.  They asked Lady Illadore de Bedegrayne to attend Them,  spoke words of high praise for her skill with a blade, her service  and her comportment, did create her a Companion of the White Scarf  and granted her arms.  Scroll scrivened by THLord Cadell Blaidd Du  and limned by THLady Odriana vander Brugghe, upon a text by Alejandro  Mateo Ramirez.

Later upon the Monday, His Majesty ventured forth to the encampment  of the Barony of Thescorre, where Their Excellencies, Eric and Katja,  graciously welcomed Him in the midst of their Baronial Court.  His  Majesty asked the Companions of the Most Noble Order of the Pelican  to attend Him, whereupon he also called for His Excellency, Cedric  the Humble.  His Majesty did cause a Writ to be served upon Cedric,  directing him to take counsel of the Order and to present himself  before Their Majesties upon the following day, to answer the question  whether he would accept elevation to said Order.  Scroll by Her  Excellency, Gillian Llewellyn of Ravenspur.

Still later upon the same day, a grand Revel was held in the  Æthelmearc Royal Encampment, at which Their Majesties recognized the  accomplishments of several gentles:

Jacob of Dunmar was made a Companion of the Keystone for his service  to his Kingdom and Shire, particularly in helping to set up and clean  up after events.  Scroll to be forthcoming.

Their Majesties invited the Confederation of Mountain Clans to attend  Them; after some discussion and much banter concerning the activities  of the Confederation, Their Majesties did issue the Confederation a  Letter of Marque, authorizing them to direct their sights upon the  enemies of Æthelmearc.

Master Gille MacDhonuill asked Their Majesties to witness the  transfer of stewardship of the Æthelmearc Brewers' Guild from himself  to Lord Brandubh O'Donnghaile and Iain mac an Bhaird.

Their Majesties thanked everyone who helped to make the evening's  revels a success, especially Lord Brandubh O'Donnghaile and Iain mac  an Bhaird, who coordinated the beverages for the evening, and THLady  Odriana vander Brugghe, who coordinated the evening's comestibles.

Captain John Michael Thorpe was made a Companion of the Fleur  d'Æthelmearc and granted arms for his skill in silversmithing and  metalwork.  Scroll by Master Jonathan Blaecstan.

Upon the afternoon of Tuesday, the fifteenth day of August, Their  Majesties sojourned to the archery field, whereupon They did  recognize Lochlainn mac Faolain Bhain, called Silverwolf, as a  Companion of the Scarlet Guard for his ludicrous prowess with bow and  arrows, and granted him arms.  Scroll by Lady Muirghein Gealbhain.

Upon the evening of Tuesday, the fifteenth day of August, Their  Majesties held a grand Court in the company of Their Heirs,  Christopher and Morgen, Prince and Princess of Æthelmearc, and the  Landed Nobility of the Kingdom of Æthelmearc, wherein They recognized  the following gentles:

Master Alaric MacConnal was given the Æthelmearc Award of Excellence  for his untiring service as Pennsic Exchequer, stepping in most  capably where others would fear to tread, and assuming duties he had  long since thought passed on.

Padraig O'Cillin was awarded arms for his years of service and for  his willingness to help any in need.  Knotwork by Lord Mathias Kotok;  icon and further limning by Lady Marija Kotok.

Juliana Delamere was made a Companion of the Keystone for her  assistance with Kingdom projects and also her service to her Shire of  Misty Highlands.  Scroll scrivened by Lady Anlaith ingen Trena and  limned by Lady Nivah Katherine Rose of Bannockburn, upon a text by  Master Gwilym o'r Tair Afon.

Their Majesties welcomed His Grace, Siegfried von Halstern, into  Their Presence.  His Grace noted that some twenty-five years ago, he  had knighted a good man who continues to inspire many to the present  day.  Their Majesties then invited His Excellency, Sir Ogami Akira  into Their Presence and congratulated him on the twenty-fifth  anniversary of his knighting.

Their Majesties called forth the Companions of the Most Noble Order  of the Laurel and asked them whether they had counseled a particular  gentle, as Their Majesties had asked.  Having been assured by the  Order that they had complied with the Crown's wishes, Their Majesties  invited THLord Valgardr Gunnarsson to attend Them.  After hearing the  words of Master Remus Fletcher, Mistress Rhiannon y Bwa, His  Excellency, Sir Alonzio of the Peacemakers, and His Excellency, Sir  Jehan de la Marche (who noted among his other attributes the fact  that incidentally, he was the individual who had authorized Sigfried  von Halstern), Their Majesties, being pleased with all They had  heard, asked Valgardr whether he would accept elevation to said  Order.  Having received Valgardr's assent, Their Majesties called for  a cloak, presented by Valgardr's lady wife, Lady Juliana Delamere;  and a medallion and wreath, presented by Mistress Aleea Baga.  They then created Valgardr Gunnarsson a Companion of  the Laurel, and granted him arms by letters patent.  Scroll by Lady  Gianna di Aurelio, upon a poem by His Excellency, Sir Jehan de la  Marche, also proclaimed to excellent effect by Sir Jehan.

Gefyn was awarded arms for her service as a thrown weapons marshal as  well as for teaching others to throw with deadly accuracy.  Scroll  scrivened by Lord Ardal of Antioch and limned by Lady Sarra Moore.

Their Majesties asked the Companions of the Order of the Millrind to  attend Them, and spoke of a certain gap amongst their numbers, and of  a wrong which needed to be righted.  They then asked Her Excellency,  Una de Saint Luc to attend Them, and created her a Companion of the  Millrind for her service to the Great Pennsic War and to the scribal  community, most particularly as the Sylvan Signet.  Scroll to be  forthcoming.

Iain mac an Bhaird was awarded arms for his help at events, fetching  and carrying, carrying heavy objects, helping with young gentles, and  especially for brewing great quantities of mighty fine beer.  Scroll  scrivened by Lord Ardal of Antioch and limned by Lady Sarra Moore.

Their Majesties asked Their Herald, Giulietta da Venezia to attend  Them.  Their Majesties noted that Their illustrious predecessors,  Robin and Isabeau, had named Giulietta the twentieth Jewel of  Æthelmearc, and of some deliberations They had had in determining the  next Jewel.  Their Majesties then asked the family of the late Master  Johan von Traubenberg to attend Them, spoke of Johan's many years of  service to his Kingdom and of the love and ideals he had inspired in  so many gentles, then created Master Johan von Traubenberg the twenty- first Jewel of Æthelmearc, posthumously.  Scroll to be forthcoming.

Elena du Tailleur was awarded arms for her service to her shire as  Chatelaine, and also for her skill and service in sewing.  Scroll  scrivened by Lady Lara Sukhadrev and limned by Iulia Pavloveia.

Arnthor Magnusson was made a Companion of the Golden Alce for his  prowess in heavy weapons combat.  Scroll scrivened by Her Excellency,  Ekaterina Volkova and limned by d'Savaudan, of Calontir.

Rastaslav Mikalovich Deneprov was awarded arms for his prowess at  heavy weapons combat and for the assistance he has provided to the  Incipient Shire of Gryffon's Keep.  Blockprint by Don Bastiano di  Iacopo, scrivened by Lady Sofie Davenport, upon a text by Mistress  Rose Marian of Edgewater.

Their Majesties asked young William McNish to attend Them, whereupon  Her Majesty bestowed a favor upon him, and noted that She was pleased  to see that he had recovered from his illness earlier in the War.

Their Majesties asked William McNish to remain upon the dais while  They summoned his mother, Florian Dupommier, and created her a  Companion of the Keystone for her many years of service to the  Society and her Kingdom as a Pennsic crier.  Scroll by Her  Excellency, Gillian Llewellyn of Ravenspur.

Their Majesties asked Master Gwilym o'r Tair Afon to attend Them, and  spoke of his many years of service to the archery community and to  the Kingdom, and of the fine example he sets for all gentles wherever  he goes.  In recognition thereof, Their Majesties did create Gwilym a  Baron of Their Court.  Scroll by THLady Antoinette de la Croix.

Master Jonathan Blaecstan of the East Kingdom was made a Companion of  the Keystone in appreciation of the many beautiful scrolls he has  created for our Kingdom and its people, often with very little  notice.  Scroll by Her Excellency, Ekaterina Volkova.

Rebecca of Myrkfaelinn was awarded arms in absentia for the  assistance she gives her group, especially in cooking and sewing.   Scroll by THLady George Anne.

Their Majesties thanked everyone who assisted with Kingdom projects  for the War and with preparations for the previous evening's Revel,  which had been a grand success.

Gareth Kincaid was made a Companion of the Keystone for his service  as a marshal and also for his skill at armoring.  Scroll layout by  Maitresse Yvianne de Castel d'Avignon, scrivened by Lady Anlaith  ingen Trena, and limned by Runa Thorgrimsdottir.

Their Majesties asked the Companions of the Most Noble Order of the  Pelican to attend Them, and inquired whether the Order had counseled  a particular gentle, as directed.  They then asked His Excellency,  Cedric the Humble to present himself before Them.  After hearing the  words of Mistress Rhiannon y Bwa, His Excellency, Sir Haakon  Thorvaldsson, called Oaktall, Her Excellency, Caryl Olesdatter, His  Excellency, Devon Adair Bartholomy, and His Excellency, Fridrikr  Tomasson av Knusslig Hamn (as delivered by Her Excellency, Orianna  Fridrikskona), Their Majesties declared Themselves most pleased with  all They had heard, and asked Cedric whether he would proceed.   Having received Cedric's assent, Their Majesties created Cedric the  Humble a Companion of the Pelican, granted him arms by letters  patent, and caused him to be arrayed in new regalia appropriate to  his station:  a cloak, presented by Cedric's lady wife, Baroness  Peregrine of Thescorre; the ancestral medallion of the Pelicans of  Æthelmearc and another personal to Cedric, both presented by Her  Grace, Anna Blackleaf.  Scroll by Master Jonathan Blaecstan.

Her Majesty announced that She would present favors to gentles  immediately following Court, at the Royal Encampment the following  morning at 9 of the clock, and every day upon the battlefield.

Their Majesties asked the Companions of the Millrind to attend Them  two days hence upon the Battlefield at the hour of 9:30.

Their Majesties having directed Their Herald to suspend Their Court  and precede Them from the dais, then recalled yet another item of  business pending between Them.  They asked His Excellency, Sir Jehan  de la Marche to relieve Their Herald of her staff of office, her  drinking vessel, and her Book of Proceedings, and directed Their  Herald, Baroness Giulietta da Venezia, to present herself before  Them.  The much-puzzled Herald having returned to the dais asked how  she might serve, whereupon Their Majesties noted that They had  already seen much of her service.  His Majesty then produced a volume  He had secreted upon the dais, and with great glee read to His  Herald, Giulietta, a Writ of Summons directing her to present herself  before Their Majesties upon the ninth day of September at Summer's  End in Their Canton of Beau Fleuve, there to answer the question  whether she will accept elevation to the Most Noble Order of the  Pelican.  Their Majesties then summoned the Companions of the  Pelican, and asked them to take Their most astonished Herald and  counsel her appropriately.  Scroll scrivened by THLady Alheydis von  Korckhingen and limned by Her Excellency, Una de Saint Luc.

Upon Thursday, being the seventeenth day of August, Their Majesties  did meet Their Order of the Millrind upon the Battlefield.  There,  They called forth one Bronwyn MacFhionghuin, long the mainstay of  they Sylvan Army Support Services, did create her a Companion of the  Millrind and granted her arms in recognition of her service to the  Kingdom and its martial community.  Scroll by THLady Alienor Russeal.

Later upon the Thursday, Their Majesties proceeded to the rapier  field, where They called Don Diego Miguel Munoz de Castilla before  Them.  Having spoken in glowing terms of the dashing figure cut by  Don Diego upon the field, Their Majesties saw fit to bestow upon him  the Order of Merit for Martial Authenticity.  Scroll by Lady  Alessandra Bentivegna da Faenza, called Yasmina, upon a text by Don  Corwyn Montgomery, Spanish translation by Her Excellency, Rhiannon  the Curious.

Still later upon the Thursday, Their Majesties convened an assemblage  of gentles from the Shire of Kings Crossing, in order that several of  their number as well as several other gentles might be recognized:

Khodoska Mordasova was awarded arms for her service as Herald for the  Shire of Kings Crossing, and also for her service in many kitchens.   Scroll by Lady Astraya Royeticha.

Sionn the Lost was awarded arms for his many years of service to the  Shire of Kings Crossing and to his Kingdom, most particularly for his  assistance in making new gentles feel welcome.  Scroll by Lady  Anlaith ingen Trena.

Renata Rouge, called the Posh Rot, was awarded a Sigil of Æthelmearc  for her service to her Kingdom and to Their Majesties during Their  Reign.

Wulfer Drachenhand was awarded a Sigil of Æthelmearc for his service  to his Kingdom and to Their Majesties during Their Reign.

Van Horn was awarded arms for his many years of most dependable  service to the Shire of Kings Crossing and to his Kingdom.  Scroll  limned by Lady Sarra Moore, text and scrivening by Lord Ardal of  Antioch.

Upon Friday, the eighteenth day of August, Their Majesties traveled  to the Closing Ceremonies.  Afterward, They chose to recognize  several gentles:

Their Majesties asked Their Order of the Millrind to attend Them,  whereupon they also summoned Don Valentine Rafael de Perigueux before  Them.  Their Majesties praised Valentine's many years of service to  the rapier community as well as to his Shire and Kingdom, and created  him a Companion of the Millrind.  Scroll by Master Jonathan Blaecstan.

Their Majesties next asked Their Order of the Fleur d'Æthelmearc to  attend Them.  They also called for Mistress Euriol of Lothian, and  praised her knowledge and skill in the culinary arts as well as her  willingness to share her knowledge with others, and created her a  Companion of the Fleur d'Æthelmearc.  Scroll by Her Excellency,  Ekaterina Volkova.

Conrad MacCallum was made a Companion of the Golden Alce for his  prowess in heavy weapons combat.  Scroll to be forthcoming.

Their Majesties then began a perambulation about the mercantile area,  wherein They recognized the following gentles:

Fionnghuala Leasa na Linne was awarded a Sigil of Æthelmearc for her  service to her Kingdom and to Their Majesties.

Lucetta di Cosimo was made a Companion of the Sycamore for her skill  in telling tales of faraway lands, as well as for her creativity, wit  and humor in making novel objects at which archers might take aim.   Scroll scrivened by THLady Antoinette de la Croix and limned by Lady  Wynn Ravenlocke.

Rowena ni Dhonnchaidh was awarded a Sigil of Æthelmearc for her  service to her Kingdom and to Their Majesties.

Upon the Saturday, Their Majesties continued Their tour of the War,  during which time They recognized the following gentles:

Justinian, son of Wulfstan was awarded a Sigil of Æthelmearc for his  hard work and service, especially in ensuring that the Royal  Encampment had plenty of water and ice each and every day of the War.

Seretai of Atlantia was made a Companion of the Keystone and awarded  arms with the consent of His Majesty, Michael, King of Atlantia, for  her many hours of service working at Pennsic Security for the past  decade.

Yaya Dunarea of Chester was awarded arms for her many years of  service and assistance at the Great Pennsic War.

William of the Gorge was awarded arms for his many years of service  and assistance at the Great Pennsic War.

Baroness Brise Sanguin, autocrat of the Great Pennsic War was awarded  a Sigil of Æthelmearc, as were the Staff of the Great Pennsic War, in  recognition of all of their hard work with and at Pennsic.

Upon the Sunday, as the War drew to a close, and the caravans were  being loaded for the journey homeward, Their Majesties did conclude  Their Progress throughout the Great Pennsic War, did declare Their  business at an end, and did close Their Court.
