Æthelmearc Letter of Intent Æ101
January 25, 2006 (AS 41)

NOTE:  Beginning this month, the aeheralds web version of the AEthelmearc XLoI's will be taken directly from the OSCAR-generated code, with minor editing to remove any links pointing to the OSCAR server.

It is the intent of the Æthelmearc College of Heralds to register the following devices. Unless otherwise noted, submitters will accept any changes and will allow holding names.

1: Barbary Rose of the Endless Hills - New Name & New Device

Gules, a dragon displayed and in chief a rose Or.

Submitter desires a female name.
No major changes.
Client requests authenticity for late 1500's Elizabethan.
Sound most important.

The submitter will not accept major changes except as noted below.

This name was originally submitted to kingdom as <Barbary Rose> and was changed at kingdom.

Barbary - Talan Gwynek, "Feminine Given Names in A Dictionary of English Surnames" s.n. Barbara (http://www.sca.org/heraldry/laurel/reaneyAG.html) states:

Barbara < Gk bárbaros `foreign, strange'. Barbary, Barbery are the usual vern. forms of Barbara; Bab and Barb are hyps. from which various dims. in -et, -ot, and el are formed"

and dates the spelling <Barbary> to 1581.

Rose - Reaney and Wilson, s.n. Rose, give Richard Roycse, Rose 1604, 1609.

Julie Kahan, "Surnames in Durham and Northumberland, 1521-1615" (http://www.s-gabriel.org/names/juetta/parish/surnames_r.html) gives nine occurrences of the name <Rose> from 1572 to 1615

Endless Hills - the SCA branch name <Endless Hills, Barony of> was registered in August of 1999 (via AEthelmearc). Although the submitter does not allow major changes, she specifically allowed the addition of <of the Endless Hills> if needed.

We find <Barbary Rose> to conflict with <Barbara atte Rose> (01/1998 Caid). The difference in spelling of the given name is not a significant difference, and the elimination of the preposition does not count for difference. Therefore, we have added the byname phrase, as allowed by the submitter, to avoid conflict.

After further consultation with the submitter, she has decided to further allow the elimination of the definite article from the byname phrase, if necessary, yielding <Barbary Rose of Endless Hills>. We are unsure whether the definite article needs to be eliminated for registerablility, in light of the fact that the group name does not include it. We have elected to leave the byname phrase as submitted and we ask Pelican for clarification.

2: Clarice Roan - Resub Device

Per fess azure and argent, a dove rising wings displayed and inverted argent and a serpent embowed counter-embowed gules.

The submitter's name was registered in July 2006 (via Æthelmearc).

Her previous device submission, Per fess azure and argent, a dove rising wings displayed and inverted argent sustaining in its claws a serpent embowed counter-embowed gules, was returned by Laurel in July 2006, for the following reason:

This device is returned as no blazon we could derive adequately described the careful placement required to have the dove and the snake on opposite sides of the line of division. As a blazon cannot be derived which would allow the reconstruction of this emblazon, per RfS VII.7.b - Reconstruction Requirement the device must be returned.

Here, the two charges are separated, with neither crossing the division line.

3: Clarice Roan - New Badge

(Fieldless) A dove rising wings displayed and inverted argent sustaining in its claws a serpent embowed counter-embowed gules.

A previous device submission, Per fess azure and argent, a dove rising wings displayed and inverted argent sustaining in its claws a serpent embowed counter-embowed gules, was returned by Laurel in July 2006, for the following reason:

This device is returned as no blazon we could derive adequately described the careful placement required to have the dove and the snake on opposite sides of the line of division. As a blazon cannot be derived which would allow the reconstruction of this emblazon, per RfS VII.7.b - Reconstruction Requirement the device must be returned.

This design, being fieldless, should avoid the problems of her previous device submission.

4: Gunnarr of the Endless Hills - New Name & New Device

Purpure, two horses combattant Or and on a chief argent, four roses gules.

Submitter desires a male name.
Language (Viking/Icelandic) most important.
Culture (Viking/Icelandic) most important.

Gunnarr - Geirr Bassi, p. 10, counts 11 occurrences of <Gunnarr> in the Landnámabók.

Endless Hills - the SCA branch name <Endless Hills, Barony of> was registered in August of 1999 (via AEthelmearc).

The given name was originally submitted as <Gunnar>, and the submitter provided documentation for the name as late period Swedish. The submitter indicated a preference for, but did not request authenticity to, "Viking/Icelandic" language and culture. After further consultation with the submitter, he has asked that we change the given name to <Gunnarr> to comply with his interest in Viking language and culture.

Regarding the byname phrase, the submitter has no preference as to whether the definite article is included. Both <of the Endless Hills> and <of Endless Hills> are equally acceptable. We are unsure whether the definite article needs to be eliminated for registerablility, in light of the fact that the group name does not include it. We have elected to leave the byname phrase as submitted and we ask Pelican for clarification.

5: Onóra inghean Chonaill - New Device

Vert, a seahorse argent and on a chief Or three shamrocks vert.

The submitter's name was registered in July 2006 (via Æthelmearc).

6: Tuathflaith ingen uí Chellaich - Resub Device

Per bend sinister purpure and azure, a bend sinister argent between a sprig of three oak leaves bendwise inverted Or and a stag's head couped, a bordure argent.

This item was returned at Laurel in September 2006 for using a tincture halfway between purpure and gules. The device had been redrawn at kingdom, the forms being generated on a color printer. In so doing, a shade of purpure was chosen that leaned too much toward gules to be distinctly purpure.

For resubmission, the forms have been regenerated, using Crayola markers for the coloring.

7: Verederosa Dal Sol - New Name & New Device

Per fess argent and vert, a rose vert barbed and seeded and a sun in splendor Or.

Submitter desires a female name.
Sound most important.

Verederosa - Arval Benicoeur, "Feminine Given Names from Thirteenth Century Perugia" (http://www.s-gabriel.org/names/arval/perugia/perugiaFemAlpha.html) counts one occurrence of this spelling in a tax roll of the city of Perugia taken in 1285.

Dal Sol - Arval Benicoeur and Talan Gwynek, "Fourteenth Century Venetian Personal Names" (http://www.s-gabriel.org/names/arval/venice14/ venice14sur.html) list this form and describe it as a "locative, perhaps 'from the clearing'."

This concludes the Æthelmearc External Letter of Intent for January 25, 2007

We count 3 new primary names, 4 new devices, and 1 new badge for a total of 8 payable items. We count 2 resubmitted devices for a total of 2 non-payable items. A check for $32 will be forwarded to Laurel separately.
