ÆTHELMEARC COLLEGE OF HERALDS - commentary archive
Letter of Intent #102
Aryanhwy merch Catmael

1. Berwyn Conall of Blackwood - You cannot have a purpure pile on a sable
field; this violates the rule of contrast. Luckily, this can be
reblazoned as simply "Per chevron throughout sable and purpure, in chief
two wolves combattant argent." Unfortunately, this conflicts with Uther
Shieldbreaker (reg. 09/1991 via the East), "Per saltire argent and azure,
in fess two dogs combattant argent." There is one CD for the field, but
none for the placement of the charges, since the placement is forced in
Uther's arms.

If <Conall> is considered as a Gaelic name, this is not registerable
because of the combination of Gaelic and Welsh, as well as the fact
that neither double given names nor unmarked patronyms are found in
Gaelic.

If <Conall> is considered as anglicized Irish or Scots, then the name
is not registerable because of the temporal disparity of greater than
1000 years between <Connell> and <Berwyn>.

R&W s.n. Berwin has <Goscelinus Beruinus> 1086 and <Matthew Berewynson>
1428. <Berewyn Connell of Blackwood> would be registerable with no
weirdnessess (since Scots/English combinations are not a weirdness).

2. Domnall na nAmus - The arms should be clear of both Eric von Wald
(reg. 10/1990 via Caid), "Per bend sable and vert, in bend sinister three
crosses formy Or" and Charles von Strasburg (reg. 10/1995 via Atenveldt),
"Vert, three Celtic crosses swallowtailed and a chief embattled Or." In
the first case there is one CD for the field and one for the arrangement;
in the second, there is one for the type of cross and another for removing
the chief.

4. Helewys Spynnere - No conflicts found.

5. Phiala O'Ceallaigh - Blazon fu: "Argent crusily saltirewise, on a
chevron azure three nettle leaves argent." No conflicts found.

6. Phiala O'Ceallaigh - No conflicts found.

7. Rowan de la Garnison - No conflicts found.

8. Thorgrim Skullsplitter - This is a definite improvement over the
previous. I found no conflicts.
