Letter of Intent #105
Raventongue Commenting Group

Unto THLady Alheydis von Körckhingen, Garnet Herald,

Greetings from Baron Fridrik Tomasson, Sycamore & Langstrand Herald

Herein follows the Letter of Comment on ILOI # 105, from the Ravens Tongue/Sycamore Commenting group, consisting of Baron Fridrikr Tomasson, THLady Matilda Bosvyle de Bela Acqua,  THL Pleasance de Coignieres, Lady Collette de Paris, and Baroness Una de Sant Luc.

1.  Aibell ingen Chernachain - New Name

While it might seem that # 2 provides sufficient documentation for Aibell, I’m not so sure.  Consider that the LoAR quoted in # 2 says “Aíbell is listed in Ó Corráin and Maguire (p. 15 s.n. Aíbell). The main person discussed under this entry is an Irish goddess. Two others are a daughter of an Ulster warrior and a daughter of a king of Munster mentioned in stories. The entry is not clear whether these last two women are only legendary or not, so we are giving the submitter the benefit of the doubt at this time,” I doubt how far Laurel/Pelican will be willing to stretch things.

The rest of the name is fine (Fridrikr)

2.  Aíbell Shuluaine - Change of name from Aíbell Shúlglas / Reconsideration of Change

What is “reconsideration”?  Do you mean a resubmission, a change of name, or an appeal of Laurel/Pelican’s ruling?

It reads like a change of name.  However, no evidence has been presented that shows that –uaine is acceptable, and the previous registration says flatly that it is not: “Though we are not completely certain what form a period byname with this meaning would take, we are certain it would not be the submitted Sùil-uaine since the word used to refer to green eye-color is glas not uaine. The Dictionary of the Irish Language (s.v. súil) lists the compound súilglas which combines súil 'eye' with glas 'green', but give no dates for this word. The Annals of the Four Masters, in the year 624, have suile glasa as part of the text of the entry (as opposed to being included in a name), which gives evidence that glas was used in conjunction with sùil in period.”

Unless you have new evidence to present, I’d say this is a non-starter. (Fridrikr)

3.  Aurèlio di Baldasare - New Name

This is fine.

4.  Clemente de Warrewyk - New Name and Device

Per saltire Or and sable, four anchors counterchanged.

(Fridrikr here): The name should be ok, although I’m not certain that the terminal “e” is well-enough documented.

The device is fine.

5.  Clewin Kupferhelbelinc - New Name and Device

Per bend gules and azure, a bend between two tankards Or.

How Cool is This!  Great Name!!!!!!

6.  Collette de Paris - Device Change

Azure, a lion of Saint Mark and on a chief argent three fleurs-de-lys azure.

No problems.

7.  Eilonwydd ferch Llewellyn Sutor à Gwynydd - New Name and Device

Per pale argent and vert, an oak leaf and an acorn inverted counterchanged, in base a baronial coronet Or, all within a bordure embattled purpure.

(Fridrikr here): <SIGH>  The invented given name seems to be pretty far-fetched from here.  Given that the base of it is from a fantasy and that there is scant documentation for the final element, I’d be tempted to return it.  Perhaps she could use Eiliwedd or Eilonwy?  The balance of the name is fine.

The device strikes all of us as being overly complex… slot-machine style.  The coronet in base disappears from view, and the bordure provides too little space for everything that is happening here.  We feel it should be returned for re-design.

8.  Etain Eame - New Badge

Sable, two cubit arms fesswise hands clasped argent, a bordure Or.

No problems.

9.  Fionnait inghean Chonchogaidh - New Name

No problems.

10.  Fredeburg von Katzenellenbogen - New Badge

(Fieldless) A yale rampant contourny vert, spotted and armed argent.

No problems.

11.  Gabriel Hawkes - New Name and Device

Per chevron Or and purpure, an angel holding a horn in front, in chief two tau crosses, a bordure embattled sable.

No problems

12.  Godke de Grote - New Name

No problems.

13.  Grímr Kveld-Úlfr - New Name

A Fine Name… Excellent Culture!!!!!

14.  Hauoc the Wild - New Device (kingdom-level resubmission)

Per chevron gules and sable, an eagle displayed within a bordure Or.

Unfortunately, there is a conflict with Athelwulf the Ancient of the Dry Lands (badge, Atenveldt, 1/85): Gules, a duck displayed, head affronty, within a bordure Or.

While there is one difference for the field, there are no others.  The duck in its displayed form is the same as an eagle…. Despite the beak.

15.  Helewys Spynnere - New Device

Or, on a cross gules five quatrefoils argent seeded Or.

No problems.

16.  Henryk Bogusz herbu Zagłoba - New Name and Device

Azure, in pale a scimitar fesswise and a horseshoe inverted argent.

(Fridrikr here): I’m uncertain about the name which may be presumptuous.  I cannot tell for certain from the documentation.

The device is fine.

17.  Leiðólfr Grimr - New Name

A Fine Name from a most Admirable Culture!!!!

18.  Margretha la Fauvelle - New Name and Device

Per saltire vert and Or, a sun in splendor counterchanged.

The name is fine.

The device is probably clear of but very close to Gareth Ivinghoe (West, 2/91): Per saltire gules and Or, a sun counterchanged.

It’s clear by change of tincture of field & charge

19.  Marianna Molin di Salerno - New Device

Azure goutty d'Or, six lymphads sailing to sinister Or, charged on each sail with a martlet volant sinister gules, a base Or.

No problems, though she should be a Pirate.

20.  Megan the Mad - Device Change

Azure semy of ducks naiant Or, a rapier bendwise sinister inverted argent.

Just ducky!

21.  Miyao Kaneko - New Device

Argent, a Japanese iris sable.

“The submission notes make mention of a possible conflict with Brand the Black, (Fieldless) A trillium sable barbed and seeded Or (registered August 1995 via the Middle).”

And we feel that the conflict cited is indeed a conflict.

22.  Miyao Kaneko - New Badge

(Fieldless) A dragonfly bendwise sable.

A possible conflict with Eymund víss: Argent, a dragonfly bendwise sable winged gules. (Caid, 2005)

We are uncertain on whether changing the tincture of the wings is sufficient to gain the need difference.

23.  Reyni-Hrefna - New Name and Device

Quarterly arrondy sable and vert, a mullet of five fracted arrows argent fracts to center.

(Fridrikr here) As I understand the naming standards in Old Norse, this is actually considered to be but one name and our rules require two.  Is there a precedent on this?

Possible conflict with:

Yerek the Inert (West, 11/81): Sable, a mullet of four points voided argent.

We are uncertain about granting a difference for four points v. five points.

24.  Rhiannon filia Catell - New Name and Device

Per bend azure and vert, a seahorse erect argent and a chief Or.

Name is fine.

25.  Sibilla Griffyn - Change from Holding Name Siobhan of Misty Highlands

Name is ok.

26.  William Parris - Change of Name from William FitzGeorge of Gloucester

A Slam Dunk, Mister President!

27.  Zianna beguy urdina de Zabaleta - New Name and Device

Quarterly purpure and sable, in saltire a seahorse contourney Or between four crosses of lozenges counterchanged argent and Or.

I sincerely wish and hope that this name will pass!  It is a great thing!

The blazon, however, needs work.  We think that the following works better (though the complexity of this design is the problem):

Quarterly purpure and sable, a seahorse contourny Or between four crosses of lozenges in saltire those in bend argent and  those in bend sinister Or.

28.  Zianna beguy urdina de Zabaleta - New Badge

(Fieldless) A cross gringolé purpure with snake heads argent.

We are uncertain as to what other crosses a cross gringolé could conflict.  Thus we point out Passchyer Bisscop (Trimaris, 5/05): Argent, a Coptic cross purpure.

If there is no difference between the crosses it is a conflict.

This ends our Comments on ILOI # 105.

For the group, I am your servant,

FRIDRIKR
