Letter of Intent #106
Lucien d'Artois, Thamesreach Pursuivant

Unto Alheydis von Körckhingen, Garnet Herald, and the College of Heralds of Æthelmearc, greetings from Lucien d’Artois.

Included are my comments on the Æthelmearc Internal Letter of Intent #106, dated July 1, 2007 (A.S. XLII)

1. Aurelio di Baldasare - New Device.   Gyronny gules and argent, a bull passant guardant Or within a bordure sable.

The bull’s head is not quite guardant, but it’s almost there, so I don’t necessarily think that it needs to be redrawn.  I found no conflicts with this device.

2. Corbinus de Cuvae - New Name  & New Device.  Vert, on a bend azure fimbriated argent a flanged mace Or.

Laurel registered <Corbinus of Æthelmearc> without comment in Feb 2006, which was from Æ88 dated 1 Sep 05:
Corbinus - Morlet, Latin, s.n. Corbinus dated to 780 in Cart. S. Vict. Mars.

The link to the actual page cited from the Carticulaire du St. Aubin is: http://chaucer.library.emory.edu/charters/html/P125to51.htm

I found no conflicts with this device.

3. Faith of Rayne - Resub Name Change From Holding Name.

The name which was returned in Feb 2006 by Laurel was <Rayne le Fey>, so they registered <Faith of Hunter’s Home> as a holding name, which would lead me to believe that there was some indication that <Faith> was the submitter’s given name.

4. Garrett Williamson - New Name.

Great name!  Referenced documentation is spot on.

5. Gille MacDhonuill - New Badge.  (Fieldless) An oak leaf bandwise sinister inverted gules.

Blazon fu: (Fieldless) An oak leaf bendwise sinister inverted gules.  I found no conflicts with this badge,

6. Gille MacDhonuill - New Badge.  (Fieldless) Three oak leaves in pall inverted stems joined to center gules.

I found no conflicts with this badge.

7. Hildegardis quae et Berthegund - New Name  & New Device.  Checky Or and Sable, on a pile indented Sable a bee volant Or.

This device may need to be redrawn. The pile needs to be redrawn so that the point is deeper on the shield.  That would help with identifiability issues as well, as I really couldn’t tell where the ordinary was.

8. Lasairfhíona inghean Uí Ghallchobhair - New Name.

Looks good to me!

9. Marian of Blackwood - New Name  & New Device.  Quarterly argent semy of trefoils sable and sable, a rose proper.

Ekwall, p. 47 s.n. <Blackwater> also dates <Black-> to 1576 and 1577.

I found no conflicts with this device.

10. Marija Kotok - New Badge.  Per saltire sable and gules, a lion couchant argent.

I found two possible conflicts with this badge.

Kareina Talvi Tytar, Azure, vetû, a long-haired domestic cat dormant argent. (Jul-86, West)
Ellen of Caer Seiont, Pean, a domestic cat dormant guardant argent. (Jul-83, An Tir).

Per the April 03 LoAR return of Sesildi Garces de Leon, Gules, a lion dormant and on a chief embattled Or three trefoils double-slipped gules, which was returned for conflict with Arabella Lyon de Rohese, Gules, a lion couchant guardant Or, on a chief Or three cinquefoils gules, Laurel ruled that there is no difference for the minor posture changes to the lion (affecting only the head).

With each of the two possible conflicts, there is a difference for changing the field, but no difference for changing the type of cat.

11. Sionn, the Lost - New Name  & New Device.  Per band sinister azure and vert, on a bend sinister between a compass rose and a candle argent with candlestick Or three questions marks sable.

The submitter’s documentation, citing <Sionn> as Gaelic, which combined with the English <the Lost> is a weirdness. Another weirdness for the byname <the Lost>, which per the documentation, was deemed SCA-compatible.

Blazon-fu: Per bend sinister azure and vert, on a bend sinister between a compass rose and a candle argent with a candlestick Or three question marks sable.

The device is a bit complex… five tinctures (azure, vert, argent, Or, sable) and four charges (bend sinister, compass rose, candle/stick, question marks).  It definitely needs to be simplified.
