Letter of Intent #107
Heronter Heralds Commenting Group

Unto Garnet Herald and the Aethelmearc College of Arms;
Greetings from the Heronter Heralds. Herein, our commentary on AE ILoI #107

1: ’lfra Long - New Device Change

"Per pale argent and lozengy argent and purpure, three domestic cats
rampant contourney sable crowned Or."

No problems found.

2: ’sa Helgulfsdottir - New Name & New Device

No problems with name.

"Per pend argent and sable, a flame azure and an arrow bendwise
argent."

Blazon-fu: "Per bend". No conflicts found.

3: ’thelmearc, Kingdom of - New Badge

(Fieldless) On a barrel proper, an escarbuncle argent.

Possible conflict:
Name: Concordia of the Snows, Barony of
Date: July 1996
Kingdom: East
Type: Badge
Blazon: "(Fieldless) On a barrel proper a snowflake argent
environed of a snake involved Or."

As this is fieldless, the snake must be around the snowflake, not
the barrel. Therefore this differs only by the addition of half a
tertiary. It's definitely a visual conflict. Might we suggest
orienting the barrel "palewise" in order to clear the conflict?
We don't think it's necessary to specify the barrel as wooden. What
else would it be in period?

4: Aquila Blackmore - New Device Change

"Gules, on a lozenge ploy‚ argent between in chief two coronets Or,
a mullet sable, a bordure embattled argent."

We count four colors: red, white, yellow and black; four charges:
lozenge, coronets, mullet and border; and two complex lines of
division: ploye and embattled. Complexity count of 8+
Frankly, we're impressed he managed to register a bordure over a
vetu ploye the first time. That's not supposed to be possible.

5: Beniamin Hackewode - New Name & New Device

No problems with name.

"Vert, a wolf rampant contourny maintaining a halberd argent, in
dexter chief a mullet Or."

Clear of:
Name: Fuiltigherne ni Ruadh O'Finn
Date: March 1983
Kingdom: Meridies
Type: Badge
Blazon: "Vert, seme of estoiles Or, a female wolf rampant
argent, collared and chained Or."
(1 for orientation, 1 for number of stars, 0 for halberd vs. chains)

Name: Wolfger von Sibenbnrgen
Date: October 1998
Kingdom: Ansteorra
Type: Badge
Blazon: "Vert, a winged wolf rampant contourny argent
sustaining a quill pen Or."
(1 CD for wings, 1 for mullet, 0 for halberd vs. quill)

6: Brandubh Donnghaile - New Badge

No problems with name.

"(Fieldless) A drum bendwise argent."

No conflicts found.

7: Caitri¢na inghean U¡ Chonaill - New Name & New Device

We agree with Albion Herald that the name is in conflict. :(

"Per chevron azure and vert, two cats sejant addorsed tails entwined
and on an open book argent each page charged with a triquetra sable."

Firstly, it has to be "Per chevron abased", the line isn't high
enough for a standard chevron and drawing it higher would crowd the
cats. It can't be re-blazoned as "a base pointed" because that would
be a color-on-color violation as well as violating the "Wedding Cake"
rule. (Triquetra on book on point on field; three layersis a device,
four layers is a wedding cake! :D)

Secondly, grammar point: it's either "on an open book two triquetras
sable", or "an open book each page charged with a triquetra sable".

Finally, we count four colors: blue, green, white and black; and
three charges: cats, books and triquetra; for acomplexity count of
seven; a little high, but acceptable.

8: Catrijn van der Hedde - New Device

"Or, a dragon's head cabossed sable and on a chief vert three
triangles inverted Or."

No conflicts found.

9: D„umler Helm - New Name

We agree with Albion Herald. Unless there's some evidence of the
occupational byname transforming into a given name, he's lacking a
personal name.
Does it count as an offensive name if you have to have it explained
to you first??? :D

10: amonn mac Alaxandair - New Name & New Device

"Per bend sinister argent and Or, three dexter hands in bend
sinister and a lion rampant gules, a bordure sable."

No conflicts found. However, red hands on a white field with an
Irish name is making us twitch! :( (See "Red Hand of Ulster")

11: Erasmus Fryermut - New Name

No problems found.

12: Ernine ingen Duib Dara - New Name & New Device

No problems with name.

"Argent, an oak leaf bendwise sinister vert and on a chief sable
three triquetras argent."

No conflicts found.

13: Helena Lyncoln of Norfolk - New Name & New Device

No problem with name.

"Quarterly gules and azure, four griffins argent."

No conflicts found. Check signatures at bottom. :D

14: Iohann filius Agustin - New Name & New Device

Uhm, er, this is a boy. "Iohan" is possible as a female name,
but scribes generally appended the feminine ending, even if it were
not pronounced. But the patronymic particle definitely needs to
change gender and the father's name to be given in the genitive.
Thus: "Iohanna filia Agustini". (But pronounced something like "Yoan"
or "Joan".)

"Azure, two axes in saltire and on a chief argent two eagles
displayed sable."

Blazon-fu: The eagles are "heads to sinister". No conflicts found.

15: Iwan Dyerrics - New Name & New Device

No problems with name.

"Quarterly azure and argent, a winged moose statant guardant sable."

"Authenticity NOT requested". A winged moose? Why are we not
surprized. :D
Blazon-fu: His mooseness has a raised leg and is therefore "passant"
not "statant".

16: Jakob Heckrath - New Name & New Device

"Per chevron argent and gules, a dragon's head erased and a chief
azure." No conflicts found.

17: John atte Lionheart - New Name & New Device

"atte" is used for either locatives, e.g. John atte Woodsend, John
atte Well, or possibly as reference to an Inn sign, which is another
type of locative, e.g. John atte Boar's Head. The name should be
simply "John Lionheart".

"Vert, a lion's head affronty and on a chief Or three hearts vert."

Clear of:
Name: Martha Rosewood
Date: September 1992
Kingdom: Caid
Type: Device
Blazon: "Vert, a lion's head erased and on a chief Or, two
paw-prints vert."
(1 CD for orientation, 1 CD for type and number of tertiary)

18: Katarzina Pogonowski - New Name & New Device

Uhm, er, Dagonell is mundanely Polish/Russian by ethnicity.
If she wants to be a period female Pole, it has to be Pogonowsk_a_.

"Vert, a fox sejant argent, a trimount Or."

No conflicts found.

19: Katerina of the Debateable Lands - Resub Name & New Device

The registered group name is "Debatable Lands", no 'e'.

"Per bend Or and vert, two linden leaves in bend sinister stems
issuant from the line of division counterchanged."

No conflicts found. Dagonell seems to remember that the original
submission for Ecaterina Amber of Tospenwood was "Per bend vert and
Or, two oak leaves in bend sinister issuant from the line of division
counterchanged." and it was returned for non-period style. Pelican's
files only have the registered version, "Per bend vert and Or, two
oak leaves in bend sinister conjoined at the stems counterchanged."
(East 10/84) so, the original file has to be in Eastern Crowns files.
Can someone check on this?

Amber's device is technically clear of this one. 1 CD for change of
field tinctures, 1 CD for change of leaf type.

20: Katheryn M'Kethirryke - New Name Change & New Device Change

No problems with name.

"Per chevron azure and argent goutty de sang, two wolves combattant
and a chief fleury argent."

No conflicts found.
The fleurs look a little squished, as do the wolves.

21: Magdalena de Mayfeld - New Name & New Device

No problems with name.

"Argent vetu ploy‚ counter-ermine, a winged dragon sejant contourny
purpure maintaining an egg sable."

No conflicts found. The egg is all but invisible, however since it
is a maintained charge, it's irrelevant.

22: Maghnus an Chnoic na n'Iora - New Badge

"Azure, in pale a chevron couped and a single-headed chess knight
argent."

"This type of chess knight is modern, and not registerable -- see
the discussion for Durko Vadas at
http://oscar.sca.org/index.php?action=145&id=1320, and the
subsequent return of those arms on the 12/2006 LoAR."
-Aryanhwy merch Catmael
Albion Herald, Drachenwald

Well, since OSCAR (Online System for Commentary And Response) is
only for Laurel's external commenters, we were unable to access
those discussions. However, we did find the December 2006 LoAR, and
the problem seems to be not that a single-headed chess knight isn't
registerable, but a single-headed chess knight DRAWN IN A MODERN
STYLE isn't registerable. That being the case, if this looks too
Staunton-ish, simply return it for re-drawing. We found examples of
a single-headed chess knight being registered as late as 2004.

Name: Ariadne de Glevo
Date: December 2004
Kingdom: Caid
Type: Device
Blazon: "Argent, a single-headed chess knight and on a chief sable
a tilting lance reversed argent."

Name: Christine of Caer Mear
Date: February 2004
Kingdom: Atlantia
Type: Device
Blazon: "Per pale sable and vert, on a lozenge argent a single-headed
chess knight sable."

23: Morien MacBain - New Badge

"(Fieldless) Four arrows fretted in saltire, overall a sword
palewise inverted argent."

We disagree with Albion Herald on the suggested conflict, i.e.
Ingilborg Sigmundardottir's "(Fieldless) A sheaf of a sword inverted
between four arrows argent bound with a garter sable." We think
"a sheaf" and "fretted in saltire" are very different arrangements,
even with the sword in their midst. If in doubt, kick it upstairs.

24: Nefyn merch Cinuin ap Maelgwn - New Name & New Device

"Argent, a cinquefoil purpure seeded vert within an annulet sable,
a bordure vert."

No conflicts found.

25: Sebastian Wolfgang von Bayern - Resub Device

"Per fess argent and bendy sinister azure and argent, on a demi-eagle
issuant from the line of division sable a mullet Or."

This looks like a job for... Super Eagle! :D No conflicts found.
We don't have a problem with a multiply divided field using the same
tincture twice.

26: Shait ben Michael - New Name Change

It seems strange to use the typical English spelling for the
patronymic. Admittedly, the Hebrew could be transliterated with
a "k" or a "c", but in practice it's almost always the "k". Using
the "c" instead gives the strong impression that the English
pronunciation is intended, and as Albion points out, one cannot mix
the Hebrew and English in the patronymic phrase. Strongly suggest
changing the transliteration to Mikha'el.

We have no problems with the given name.

27: Sion ap Rhainallt - New Device

"Per chevron azure and vert, an armoured arm embowed sustaining a
spear fesswise argent."

No conflicts found.

28: orvaldr fridsamr - New Name & New Device

"Per pale Sable and Or, a sheaf of swords, the center inverted,
counterchanged, a chief enarched counterchanged erminois and pean."

No conflicts found. Uhm, dividing a sword the long way is a no-no.

29: Ulfkell Dungalsson - New Name & New Device

"Sable, a wolf's head erased contourney argent and a base barry
argent and azure."

No conflicts found.

30: Ulfkell Dungalsson - New Household Name & New Badge

Domus Canis Bellatoris -- If meaning is most important to him, he
has to tell us what he wants it to mean. As it stands, it is not
grammatically correct for any meaning. Nor do any of the likely
meanings seem probable as household names. Also, this might
(depending on intended meaning) be considered somewhat offensive
(dogfighting households being slighty out of favour at present).

"Vert, on a sinister hand couped argent a dog's paw print vert."

No conflicts found.

31: Vidarr Hrafnsson - New Name & New Device

No problems with name.

"Argent, a raven displayed sable and on a chief azure, an increscent
between two triskeles of legs argent."

Blazon-fu: "triskelions of legs argent". Toyota. No conflicts found.
