Æthelmearc Letter of Report Æ108
November 30, 2007 (AS 42)

Greetings from Alheydis Garnet,
I would very much like to thank those who commented on this month's letter: The Abhainn Ciach Ghlais Heralds, Aryanhwy merch Catmael, The Heronter Heralds and Myfanwy ferch Rhiannon!

The items accepted on this letter have been forwarded to Laurel for further consideration, where we expect they will be decided on in March of 2008.
1: Alexander MacDougall - New Name Accepted

2: Alîme bint Yorgi - New Name Accepted

3: Eilionóra Ghorm inghean Phaidín - New Name & New Device Accepted
Per chevron throughout argent and azure, a decrescent argent and on a chief sable three triquetras argent.

The descriptive byname Ghorm appears to have a variety of possible meanings, including "blue", "dark", "swarthy" and "black/negro". A descriptive byname phrase along the lines of súl-ghorm might convey the desired meaning of "blue-eyed" more specifically. However, the submitter does not allow major changes. I was not able to find a form of súl-ghorm (or similar) used as a descriptive byname in period among the more readily available sources, although my search was not exhaustive. Since the form Ghorm is supported by the submitted documentation, albeit not necessarily with the submitter's desired meaning, I have forwarded the name as submitted.

4: Florian de Pompierre - New Name Change Accepted with Change

Submitted at Kingdom as du Pompier. No documentation was presented, and none found, to support du Pompier as a period French byname. Myfanwy noted the placename "Pompierre" in Dauzat and Rostaing. I was able to find some references on the web to "Pompierre" in period, although the name may be normalized in the sources. In consultation with the submitter, I have changed the byname to de Pompierre and forwarded it for further consideration.

5: Grímkell bogsveigir - New Name Pended with Change & New Device Pended for approval of redraw (with reblazon)
Per chevron sable and Or, an arrow fesswise Or and a hammer sable.

Submitted to Kingdom as Bogsveigir. According to precedent, the byname should not capitalized. The per chevron line on the submitted drawing was too shallow, and has been redrawn at kingdom at a steeper angle. The phrase "point to sinister" was dropped from the blazon. Since it is the emblazon, not the blazon that is registered, I have pended the name and device to allow the submitter to review and approve the redrawing.

6: Isibel Thorgrimskona - New Name Accepted

7: Katherine Wert - New Name & New Device Accepted
Vert, in bend three mascles bendwise Or.

8: Mariana Maria Pietrosanti - New Name & New Device Accepted with reblazon
Vert, a dragonfly and a chief triangular Or.

9: Pavel Dudoladov - New Name Accepted

10: Rhiannon of Ravenglass - New Device Accepted
Sable, a decrescent and on a chief argent three mullets sable.

11: Rígnach inghean Uí Chonaill - New Name Accepted with Change & New Device Accepted
Per pale vert and azure, a chevron between three Thor's hammers argent.

12: Robert l'Etourdi - New Device Approved
Vert, six bezants one, two and three and on a chief Or three pellets.

Our commenters were not in agreement about the possibility of a conflict with Corinne of Grenvelt (reg. 07/1997 via Atenveldt), "Vert, nine roundels arranged as a lozenge, on a chief Or, six roundels in fess gules." We count on CD for the changes to the tertiary charges. We respectfully ask Wreath for clarification on whether the arrangement of the primary charges counts for difference in this case. While 6 and 9 are both considered equivalent to semy, in both devices, there is a blazonable arrangement giving the appearance of one charge group as a triangle inverted and of the other as a lozenge.

13: Thorgrim Vargh{o,}sson - New Name Accepted with Change & New Device Accepted with reblazon
Sable, two boar's heads erased and addorsed and on a bordure Or three crosses crosslet fitchy sable.

Submitted to kingdom as Varghosson, we have change the byname in accordance with the documentation. The boar's heads were blazoned to kingdom as couped close and reblazoned as erased.

This concludes our Letter of Report Æ 108 dated November 30, 2007.
