ÆTHELMEARC COLLEGE OF HERALDS - commentary archive
Letter of Intent #109
Abhainn Ciach Ghlais Heralds

Unto the esteemed Garnet Herald of our sylvan
Kingdom of Aethelmearc do we, the Herald and Herald's
assistants of the Shire of Abhainn Ciach Ghlais, send
greetings and our commentary for the ILOI 109.

1. Aethelmearc, Kingdom of: New Order Name and New
Badge.
Firstly, We of the Order of Irony note that
Authenticity is NOT being requested for this badge for
the unnamed Order of Martial Authenticity... Secondly,
may we suggest a leather strap Gules to tie (ouch!)
this badge more closely to our Kingdom?

2. Aethelmearc, Kingdom of: New Badge.
We believe that too much of the Or is upon the
Argent as drawn--metal on metal. In addition, the
sword and rapier are too similar in appearance, even
if blazoned separately. As heralds of Aethelmearc, we
wonder "where's the escarbuncle?"

3. Aibell ingen Chernachain: New Device.
We find it too hard to discern what the dragon is
maintaining, and in addition it is not a heraldic
dragon as drawn.

4. Benedict Fergus atte Mede: New Device.
Five tinctures! We believe this may be too complex.

5. Boris Dragons Bane: New Device Change.
Device: Clear.

6. Brandr huslangr: New Device.
Device: okay, since submitter has permission to
conflict and we assume that the original is conflict
free.

7. Bridget Cordelia of Beau Fleuve: New Name and New
Device.
Name: Is Cordelia okay as a surname? We think not.
We find no evidence. According to the submitter's
statement, if only one name may be registered she
would prefer Cordelia-- we're okay with that.
Device: Clear. Very nice.

8. Ceindrech verch Elidir: New Name.
Name: Clear.

9. Erlendr raudhrain: New Name and New Device.
Name: Clear.
Device: Is this too close to "per pale Argent and
Sable a raven close counterchanged"-- Mathilda die
Knochenrichterin? Otherwise clear.

10. Finnr jafnkollr: New Name and New Device.
Name: Clear.
Device: In the blazon "wings elevated and
addorsed" is redundant, being implied by "striking".
Should sustaining be changed to maintaining, or is
this the correct description for (flying) birds?
There is a possible conflict with Owain of Corn Valley
01, 01 N "Gules a peregrine falcon rising wings
displayed Or maintaining in both talons a halberd
bendwise sinister"?

11. Grimskell bogsveigir: New Name and New Device.
Name: Clear.
Device: Clear.

12. Gwen Telynores: New Name.
Name: CONFLICTS with Gwenhwyver Telynores 96, 08
E. This is merely a shortened nickname.

13. Gwion am Willim: New Name.
Name: Clear, although we are not sure of the "ab
Willim" construct.

14. Maghnus an Chnoic na n'Iora: New Badge.
Badge: Clear.

15. Meadhbh of Clan McBain of Harlow: New Name and New
Device.
Name: Construction awful. We prefer Meadhbh
Mcbain. BUT THERE IS NO "CLAN MCBAIN OF HARLOW"
REGISTERED IN OUR DATA BASE, therefore both are
bounced if such is the case in fact.
Device: This appears to be the exact reverse of
William Montagu du Vert "Or a griffin segreant within
a bordure embatted Vert" 97, 04 E. Is this cause for
a Conflict (is it clearly distinguishable on the
field)?

16. Onnen Greg: New Name.
Name: Clear.

17. Robert l'Etourdi: New Device.
Device: We have strong reservations about the
style. The bezants appear to be in a three
dimensional, receding space formed by the per saltire.
Does this meet the complexity rules? Ye-ah... ?

18. Thorolf the Blak: New Device.
Device: Does the change to an embattled line of
division truly make it clear of the prohibition of
marshalling? We believe not.

In Service,
Master Gille MacDhonuill, Shire Herald; Maitre
Gilles de Beauchamps; THLord Egill the Dane; Lord
Aimeric de Miraval.
