ÆTHELMEARC COLLEGE OF HERALDS - commentary archive
Letter of Intent #109
Heronter Heralds Commenting Group

Unto Garnet Herald and the Aethelmearc College of Arms;
Greetings from the Heronter Heralds.
Herein, our commentary on AE ILoI #109

1: AEthelmearc, Kingdom of - New Order Name & New Badge

Name: Order of the Golden Stirrup

Rant from Dagonell: "and most examples were the color gold" To my mind,
that's a problem, _everybody_ chooses gold or silver. Everybody thinks
that if they choose the color of a valuable metal, that the value of
the metal will somehow be imparted onto the order, so we end up with
Golden Alces, Silver Buccles, Golden Quills, Silver Beavers, etc. and
no one can remember which is what without consulting a herald. On the
other hand, what does "The Green Beret" get confused with? See my point?

Badge: "(Fieldless) A stirrup Or."

Aryanhwy merch Catmael brought up the issue of trian aspect in her
letter. Parker's Glossary of Heraldry (pg. 554, sn. Stirrup) clearly
shows stirrups in a non-trian aspect. On the other hand, the submitted
emblazon is almost a direct copy of the illustration in Pic-Dic, sans
leather strap.

Possible conflict:
Name: James Ericsson
Date: June 1991
Kingdom: West
Type: Badge
Blazon: (Fieldless) A stirrup Or, leathered azure.

Aryanhwy posted an emblazon of James' badge at:
http://www.ellipsis.cx/~liana/temp/james-badge.jpg
The leather strap appears to be about a third of the charge, which is
less than half, hence negligible. We believe that the two badges are
virtually identical.

2: AEthelmearc, Kingdom of - New Badge

"Sable, a scroll unrolled bendwise argent, overall a sword bendwise sinister
and a rapier bendwise crossed in saltire Or."
This submission is to be associated with AEthelmearc Minister of the Lists

This is an almost literal violation of the sword and dagger rule.
It's also "resume heraldry", which, while not sufficient for a return,
is usually considered poor style.

"Scrolls are unrolled by default" -- Aryanhwy.
We respectfully disagree. PicDic states: "A scroll may be either
'closed' (rolled) or 'open' (partially unrolled). As neither type
is default, the type should be explicitly blazoned; open scrolls are
more common in the SCA."

Possible conflict:
Name: Society for Creative Anachronism, Earl Marshal of
Date: January 1973
Kingdom: Society
Type: Badge
Blazon: Sable, two swords in saltire Or.
(1 CVD for addition of scroll)

3: A¡bell ingen Chernach in - New Device

"Argent, a dragon displayed maintaining a chalice and a needle
threaded and on a chief triangular sable a decrescent argent."

We agree with Aryanhwy, Robert FitzAlwyn's device
(http://www.ellipsis.cx/~liana/temp/robert-device.jpg)
"Argent, a dragon sejant affronty, wings elevated and displayed, on a
chief triangular sable a broad arrow gules, enflamed Or." is a conflict,
one difference for change to tertiary.

4: Benedict Fergus atte Mede - New Device

"Per pale vert and sable, a salamander argent flamed proper
and on a chief embattled argent three mullets of seven points azure."

No conflicts found, but we count four/six colors (green, black, white,
[red, yellow,] and blue); three charges (salmander, chief, and mullets [not
counting flames]); and a complex line of partition. This is really pushing
the complexity limits.

5: Boris Dragons Bane - New Device Change

"Gules, in pale a chevron enhanced and a griffin passant
between three sets of two axes crossed in saltire."

Blazon-fu: "... between three pairs of axes ..." No conflicts found.

6: Brandr h£slangr - New Device

"Azure, on a bend argent a rose gules barbed, stemmed and leaved vert."

Possible conflict:
We agree with Aryanhwy's call on Andrea de Champs de Batailles,
"Azure, on a bend argent a unicorn's head palewise couped sable
between two cinquefoils purpure." is a conflict, one difference for
change to tertiary.

16: Onnen Greg - New Name

We would suggest the addition of a patronymic. If this is
considered as a single name, she would need a second element.
If it is considered as given name plus byname, is she not in conflict
with the historical individual from which the name is documented?
