Æthelmearc Letter of Report Æ117
April 29, 2009 (AS 43)

Greetings from Alheydis Garnet,
I would very much like to thank those who commented on this month's letter: Margaret Makafee and Myfanwy ferch Rhiannon!
The items accepted on this letter have been forwarded to Laurel for further consideration, where we expect they will be decided on in August of 2009.

1: Einarr Blæingsson - New Name Changed

Submitted as Blæingarson, the instructions for the construction of patronyms in Gierr Bassi state that the genitive case of names ending with -r is formed by changing the ending -r to -s. The patronymic suffix -son or -dóttir is then added to the genitive case stem. In some cases, the -r changes to -ar before adding the suffix. However, -ingr is not listed as one of the endings that takes this change.
The online Landnamabok [http://www.snerpa.is/net/snorri/landnama.htm] gives several examples of the genitive for this name formed with -s instead of -ar. Examples include:
Bersi goðlauss hét maður, son Bálka Blæingssonar
Bálki hét maður Blæingsson
hann var son Blæings Sótasonar

2: Iain Ard mac an Bhaird - New Badge Accepted
(Fieldless) On a griffin's head erased contourny sable a triqutra argent.

3: Iain Ard mac an Bhaird - New Household Name & New Badge Accepted
Teulu Trobwll
Per bend sinister sable and argent, a wolf's tooth issuant from chief and a wolf's tooth issuant from base counterchanged.

As Margaret Makafee states in her commentary, the household name, as submitted, is not authentic, and may not be registerable. Heather Rose Jone's "Period Models for Welsh Households" [http://heatherrosejones.com/welshhouseholdname/index.html] states clearly that the expected use of the Welsh Teulu, meaning "war band" in period, is with the personal name of the lord in whose service the war band functions, rather than with a toponym. While clearly inauthentic, it is not certain that this construction is decidely unregisterable as a step from period practice. Even if the household name were to be returned, I think that the submitter would benefit from the resulting commentary, and our letter will specifically ask for suggestions of registerable and/or more authentic household designators to be used with the desired Trobwll.

As for the badge, there are stylistic concerns that were raised by commenters. The overall impression is of "op art", and presents difficulty in blazoning. Further, it looks to be an attempt at a sort of gyronny field. Myfanwy noted an important precedent from the LoAR of May 2004, under Returns, under Meridies:
Dubhagán mac Ruairc. Device. Per pale azure and argent, three wolf's teeth issuant from dexter and another two issuant from sinister counterchanged.

This is being returned for improper drawing and non-period style, stemming from improper use of wolf's teeth.

The examples of wolf's teeth in the Pictorial Dictionary and in Siebmacher show that the teeth invariably extend almost to the center line; where teeth come from both sides they almost touch. Those on this submission do not come close. This is in itself grounds for return.

Furthermore, wolf's teeth appear in groups of three or more; barring evidence of wolf's teeth appearing singly or in pairs, there should be three or more teeth issuing from the same side. The use of fewer than three teeth is a step from period practice. The imbalance between the number of teeth on either side is also a step from period practice, independent of the the number of teeth. Therefore, even if the wolf's teeth were drawn correctly, the use of three on one side and two on the other would not be registerable as the motif is two steps away from period practice.

This design is at best a step from period practice. I defer to Wreath as to whether the design is registerable as such.

4: Solveig Throndardottir - New Alternate Name Accepted

ILoI AE115 #13: Ragnailt Marcuigham - New Name withdrawn by submitter

This name was pended on AEthelmearc Letter of Report AE115 dated February 24, 2009 to more thoroughly review available documentation and to further consult with the submitter. After informing the submitter of the problems with the byname, as described in LoR AE115, the submitter has decided to abandon using a byname based on the Gaelic verb marcuigham or related words. Accordingly, this submission is withdrawn. A resubmission of Raghnailt in Eich appears on AEthelmearc ILoI AE118 dated April 11, 2009.
Note that ILoI and LoR AE115 both included a typographical error, spelling the submitted byname as Maccuigham, rather than the submitted Marcuigham.

XLoI AE116 #8: Finnr jafnkollr - Resubmitted Device withdrawn by submitter
Gules, in bend a merlin rising contourny sustaining an axe bendwise sinister reversed Or

This device was forwarded to Laurel on AEthelmearc External Letter of Intent dated March 23, 2009. The submitter requested that the item be withdrawn on April 2, 2009. A subsequent resubmission of Gules, in bend a merlin rising contourney sustaining as axe bendwise sinister reversed within a bordure Or appears on AEthelmearc ILoI AE118 dated April 11, 2009.

This concludes our Letter of Report Æ 117 dated April 29, 2009.
