Æthelmearc Letter of Report Æ123
January 2, 2010 (AS 44)

Greetings from Alheydis Garnet,
I would very much like to thank those who commented on this month's enormous letter: Egill the Dane and Myfanwy ferch Rhiannon!
The items accepted on this letter have been forwarded to Laurel for further consideration, where we expect they will be decided on in April 2010.
In preparation for the transition of the Garnet office from myself to Baron Master Fridrikr, His Excellency has prepared this month's Letter of Report.

1: Ælfgifu Falkenglen - New Name & New Device Returned
Azure, on a gore sinister Or a thistle proper.

While the given name is acceptable and the combination of an early period given name and a later period byname is acceptable, we could find no documentation to support the byname, Falkenglen. We did find sufficient support for either Falcenham/Falkenham or Faltenham.

The device violates the Rules for Submission by using a charged gore. We have suggested that the submitter consider Or, a thistle proper and a gore sinister azure.

2: Cameron Da'Bryt - New Name & New Device Returned
Azure, a rabbit's head cabossed argent.

The name is returned because we could find no documentation to support the use of the particle "da' ". We have informed the submitter that by eliminating the particle, the name would be acceptable (unfortunately, he did not permitted such a change).

The device conflicts with a badge registered to Eógan Mac Ailpein (Atlantia, 0799): (Fieldless) A hare's head cabossed argent. There is no difference between a hare and a rabbit or a coney. Also, we note that Kingdom colleges cannot create holding names, and that the submitter is responsible for submitting proof (birth certificate, for example) that Cameron is his legal given name.

3: Ciar inghean Uí Chrotaigh - New Device Accepted

4: Cormac Ainsheasccar mac Muiredaich - New Name & New Device Accepted as redrawn
Per pale argent and sable, a bat displayed counterchanged.

5: Fredeburg von Katzenellenbogen - New Badge Accepted
(Fieldless) A printer's ball Or.

6: Gabrielle Winter - New Device Accepted as redrawn with blazon change
Per chevron sable and argent, a chevron azure between in dexter chief a mullet of four points argent and in base a fox passant reguardant gules.

The submitter requested that the fox be redrawn as reguardant, rather than guardant.

7: Halima bint Da'ud al-Attarah - New Name & New Device Accepted as redrawn
Per pall inverted azure, sable and argent, in base a hippogriff statant gules.

8: Hrafn Haraldsson - New Name Change & New Device Change Accepted
Per pale argent and sable, a raven displayed within a bordure embattled counterchanged.

His old name (Uesugi Kutarou Ietoyo) and device (Vert, three dragonflies in pall inverted tails to center argent) are to be retained as alternate name and badge.

9: Jaqueline de Molieres - New Name Changed

The byname was changed from Moliere to Molieres to match the supporting documentation.

10: Katharine McClung - New Device Accepted as redrawn
Sable, on a bend sinister argent between two cogwheels Or a spear inverted.

11: Katla úlfhéðinn - New Badge Accepted
Gules, a bend sinister counter ermine fimbriated argent between two crosses of Cerdaña argent.

We note the badge is to be jointly owned with Thorgrim Skullsplitter (registered in February of 2005 via AEthelmearc).

12: Máirín O'Cadhla - New Name Returned

While the submitter presented evidence concerning her proposed given name, the documentation used precedents that bar the registration of that name. It generally is not period practice in Ireland to use the name of the Blessed Virgin Mary as a personal given name. It is possible, however, as a late-period Anglicized name in Ireland. Further, we did find evidence that Maire is documentable in period Irish practice. The byname O'Cadhla would more likely be formed as either inghean Cadlai or inghean Uá Cadlai in Gaelic or as O'Kiely or Kiely in Anglicized Irish. Thus we have suggested either Maire inghean Cadlai or Mary Kiely.

13: Martyn Kinnish - New Name Accepted

The submitter's mundane name is Martin Kemmish. We have accepted the proposed name despite its closeness to the submitter's mundane name. The Administrative Handbook III.A.10. states:
Name Used by the Submitter Outside the Society - No name will be registered to a submitter if it is identical to a name used by the submitter for purposes of identification outside of a Society context. This includes legal names, common use names, trademarks, and other items registered with mundane authorities that serve to identify an individual or group. This restriction applies to Society branches as well as individuals. Thus, a branch cannot use the name of a significant location (a town or county, for example) within its borders. This restriction is intended to help preserve a distinction between a submitter's identity within the Society and the submitter's identity outside of the Society. A small change in the name is sufficient for registration, such as the addition of a syllable or a spelling change that changes the pronunciation. However, a change to spelling without a change in pronunciation is not sufficient. For example, Alan Miller could not register the name Alan Miller or Allan Miller but he could register the name Alan the Miller. Further, submitters may register either a name or armory which is a close variant of a name or insignia they use outside the Society, but not both.

14: Odette d'Arques - New Device Accepted as redrawn with reblazon
Or, a chevron vert between two rams heads erased respectant and a fleur-de-lys sable.

Originally blazoned as Or, a chevron vert between two rams heads erased combattant and a fleur-de-lys sable. The correct term for the position of the heads is "respectant."

15: Ragnarr the Fierce - New Name Changed

Orinally submitted as Ragnar_. We have changed the given name to the documented Norse form to comply with the submitter's request for authenticity to 9th c. Norse. We also note that the documented Norse formation of the byname per Geirr-Bassi is inn greypr, "the gripping or fierce". However, since the submitter does not permit major changes, we have maintained his byname as submitted.

16: Ruland Burckhart - New Name & New Device
Quarterly purpure and sable, in bend two bulls rampant argent.

17: Sultana bint Mihail - New Device Accepted
Gules, a chevron argent between two dumbeks Or and a nine man morris board argent.

18: Tufa Gunthamunths - New Name & New Device Returned
Pily gules and Or, a bear's pawprint sable.

We found no evidence of unmarked patronymic bynames in Gothic. Patronymic formations are documented among Goths in Latin contexts. Thus believe that Tufa cognomento Guthamunths is acceptable. However, but the submitter did not allow major changes.
Although the device is acceptable, it cannot be forwarded without an accompanying name submission. We note that the paw print would be better redrawn so that the side edges fall within the Or areas of the field. Also, the ink used to color the Or portions of the field should be yellow, not orange.

19: Vigo da Napoli - New Name & New Device Accepted
Or, a horse's head erased and in base a cinquedea dagger fesswise sable.

This concludes our Letter of Report Æ123 dated January 2, 2010.
