Æthelmearc Letter of Report Æ124
February 23, 2010 (AS 44)

Greetings from Fridrikr Garnet and Alheydis Cornelian,
We would very much like to thank those who commented on this month's letter!
The items accepted on this letter have been forwarded to Laurel for further consideration, where we expect they will be decided on in May 2010.

1: Æthelmearc, Kingdom of - New Heraldic Title Accepted
Nesselblatt Herald

2: Æthelmearc, Kingdom of - New Heraldic Title Accepted
Tabor Herald

3: Æthelmearc, Kingdom of - New Heraldic Title Accepted
White Conye Herald

4: Ariella of Thornbury - New Badge Accepted
Argent, in pale two hearts gules winged Or.

This is close to but clear of, Jeene MacDoughal (1/96 Atlantia) -- Gules, in pale two winged hearts Or. There is one difference for field tincture and a second for changing the tincture of half the charges.

5: Cainder ingen Chonchobair - New Device Accepted
Gules, on a shamrock argent a thistle proper.

6: Desiderata Drake - Resub Device Accepted with reblazon
Azure, in a pale a duck's head and two rapiers in saltire, on a chief wavy argent, three hearts gules.

The blades were originally blazoned as swords. We have changed them to the correct term, rapiers.

7: Duncan von Halstern - New Badge Accepted
Per pale purpure and sable, a lion rampant and a bordure argent

This is close to but clear of: Gaston de Barre (11/06 Æthelmearc) -- Per pale gules and sable, a tyger rampant within a bordure argent. We see one difference for the change of the field tincture and another difference for the change of tyger to lion.

8: Edward Harbinger - New Household Name & New Badge Accepted
House of the Woolf and Thymble
(Fieldless) A wolf's head sable sustaining in its mouth a thimble argent

We believe that the thimble and the wolf have equal "weight" in the design and should be treated as equal in counting differences. This brings the badge clear of: Leidhrún Leidólfsdóttir (9/92 Ansteorra) -- Per fess paly azure and argent, and argent, in base a wolf’s head couped sable. One difference for fieldlessness and a second for addition of the thimble; and of Julianna Peri de Novellara (2/99 Middle) -- (Fieldless) A thimble argent, by the same count (adding the wolf's head).

9: Elss von Augsburg - New Name & New Device Accepted
Per pale gules and Or, in fess two fleurs-de-lys counterchanged.

We see no real cause to change the blazon. We will instruct the submitter make the fleurs-de-lys large so as to fill the space more evenly.

10: Giovanna Elisabetta Cellini - Resub Device Accepted with reblazon
OSCAR finds the name registered exactly as it appears in July of 2008, via Æthelmearc.
Purpure, on a pile between two lions combattant Or, a cross bottony purpure.

We have changed the blazon from Purpure, on a pile between two lions Or, a cross bottony purpure to better reflect the emblazon.

11: Ian Damebrigge of Wychwood - New Device Change Pended
Per saltire Or and vert, on a pale cotised sable a crescent and overall an owl rising wings displayed and inverted argent.

This submission has been pended, awaiting a proposed name change for the submitter.

12: Ian Damebrigge of Wychwood - New Badge Change Pended
(Fieldless) On the bowl of a spoon inverted argent a blackletter miniscule h sable.

This submission has been pended, awaiting a proposed name change for the submitter.

13: Ian of the Debatable Lands - New Name & New Device Acccepted
Per pale azure and Or, a duck naiant counterchanged.

This is clear of Edmund de la Haye (badge, 8.96 An Tir) -- Per pale azure and Or, a crane in his vigilance counterchanged collared and chained gules. There is one difference for the type of bird and a second for the posture, naiant vs. statant (see SCA Tracable Heraldic Art page's of the crane in its vigilance to see that the crane is basically erect when in its vigilance: )

14: Lasairfhíona inghean Uí Ceallaigh - New Name Returned for Conflict

Unfortunately, this name directly conflicts with Laisairfhiona inghean Cheallaigh, registered via the East in March, 2008.

15: Myskia Náttfara - New Name Accepted

Although some concerns were raised that the name may violate RFS IV.2 which prohibits name claiming or implying magical powers, we do not find that here. The byname simply means "One who walks at night."

16: Riversedge, Shire of - New Device Accepted
Or, on a bend wavy cotised azure a laurel wreath palewise Or.

Close to but clear of Katharine de la Vache (3/06 Atlantia) -- Or, on a bend wavy azure a sun in splendor palewise Or. There is a CD for adding the secondaries; since these are both simple armory, there is one for changing only the type of tertiary, by X.4.j.2.

17: Solveig Throndardottir - New Household Name & New Branch Name Returned
The Fellows and Poor Scholars of Minerva Hall
Sable, on a pale Or between two fasces argent bladed Or and banded gules an owl rising wings displayed sable.

This submission is returned because the name is not in a form that correctly emulates the naming practices of English colleges & schools in the period times. Precisely, the use of the classical Roman goddess name is NOT documented. Rather, it appears that colleges at English Universities (Oxford & Cambridge, principally) were given names based on Christian/Catholic tradition: Magdalene, Christ, etc.) Barring documentation of the use of Classical Roman names in naming colleges, the name submission is returned. I am also wary of the use of the compound noun "Fellows and Poor Scholars" in a household name. As the name is returned, the badge must be also. We cannot create a holding name at the Kingdom level.

18: Tafrara n Dukkala - New Name Change From Holding Name Returned

Although the submitter has provided copious documentation, she has failed to document her proposed given name as a period name or noun in the Amazigh language. Indeed, it appears that in period, an Amazigh/Berber person would have been recorded in documents using a Latin name (early period), or an Islamic name (middle and late period). Without definitive documentation of a period Amazigh given name, we cannot forward this to Laurel.

19: Violante de Luna - New Name & New Device Accepted
Azure, three crescents inverted argent.

This concludes our Letter of Report Æ124 dated February 23, 2010.
