Æthelmearc Letter of Report Æ131
November 16, 2010 (AS 45)

Greetings from Fridrikr Garnet and Alheydis Cornelian,
We would very much like to thank those who commented on this month's letter!
The items accepted on this letter have been forwarded to Laurel for further consideration, where we expect they will be decided on in February 2010.

1: Æthelmearc, Kingdom of - New Order Name Pended
Company of the White Lion

The submission is pended until we ascertain whether the piece of law creating the order has been finalized.  If it goes forward, the title will be changed to the Order of the White Lion, to comply with the precedent noted.

2: Æthelmearc, Kingdom of - Resub Order Name Accepted
Order of the White Stirrup

3: Alessandra Bella Fiorentina - New Name & New Device Accepted

4: Amelie Reinhardt - New Name Accepted

5: Andreas Morgan - New Device Change Accepted with change of blazon

Please note the blazon modification.  Originally submitted as Argent, two squirrels sejant erect addorsed in chief three acorns sable.

6: Anna Darragh - New Name & New Device Accepted
Or, a phoenix gules between three oak slips proper.

7: Ardwine Soncræftere - New Name & New Device Returned
Vert, on an open scroll argent a treble clef sable.

This name is returned because we cannot document the byname adequately.
As Margaret points out, Soncr{ae}ftere is not supported in either Clark Hall, John R., A Concise Anglo-Saxon Dictionary or Bosworth, An Anglo-Saxon Dictionary.  There are some good possibilities from Bosworth, however: dreamere, gle{dh}-hle{dh}{th}reined,gle{dh}man, gliw-hla{dh}{th}riend, sangere.

The "treble clef" on the scroll is actually a "G-clef" as shown at MedLibrary.org's article on "Mensural Notation" [http://medlibrary.org/medwiki/Mensural_notation#Clefs].  The illustration is shown under section 5.1: Clefs (illustration # 1).  A further example can be found in a Palestrina MS found at the "Vatican Exhibit Music Room Two" [http://www.ibiblio.org/expo/vatican.exhibit/exhibit/e-music/Music_room2.html] (illustration # 2).  The MS is dated to 1567 and reprinted in 1598. This clef representation should be allowable as a late-period "G-clef".

Device, versus: possibly clear of: Adsiltia filia Honorii (badge, 10/05 Trimaris) -- (Fieldless) On an open scroll bendwise argent an acorn proper.
Possibly clear of: Katin inghean Neachtain (badge, 7/04 An Tir) -- (Fieldless) On an open scroll fesswise argent a cat couchant contourny sable.
In each case there is a CD for field vs. fieldless; there may be one for orientation of the primary charge, but there is only type of tertiary.
My gut feeling is that X.4.j.ii applies to both of these possible conflicts.  I believe that the scroll can be voided, which makes it eligible for the exception.

8: Ares h{o-} Spartiat{e-}s - New Name Changed & New Device Accepted
Per bend vert and azure, a shirtless man maintaining in his right hand a tankard argent between two tankards and a viking ship Or.

18: Delilah de la Rose - New Name Returned

We have been unable to find any reference to Delilah as a period given name.  Althought it is obviously a biblical name, not all Old Testament names were commonly used in period, and this name in particular would have been highly unusual, given its negative connotations.

27: Galle Amsel - New Badge Returned
(Fieldless) An enfield rampant argent

This is ronflict with Johnathan Crusadene Whitewolf (??/??) -- Gules, ermined argent, a wolf rampant argent.
There is a CD for field vs. fieldless, but not one for type by Precedent; this is from François’ second tenure:
While the enfield appears in period, the only period examples we can find are supporters. As such it is impossible to tell whether enfields were considered different from canines in period as charges on the shield. With that in mind, we are left with visual differences; at least three-quarters of an enfield is canine, and the avian forelimbs often appear close to hands, as do those of canines in period heraldry. There is not enough visual difference to give a CD between canines and enfields, so the July 1992 precedent is hereby extended to give no CD even when the critters are not holding anything. This overturns the precedent from September 2003, which was solely based on implications from the July 1992 ruling. [Anacletus McTerlach, LoAR 07/2004, Meridies-R]

Originally submitted as Vert, between the plates of a screw press a wedge of cheese and on a chief Or two oak leaves fructed vert, we changed the blazon to better describe the charges on the chief.

36: Magnús Finnbjarnarson - New Name & New Device Accepted

45: Nicodemus of Sylvan Glen - New Name & New Device
Azure, in pale a triangle inverted surmounting a triangle overlapping at the points, both voided, argent.

We have made a minor change to the blazon, adding commas in an attempt to gain more clarity.

46: Nishimura Saburou - New Device Accepted
Argent, a fess sable between a demi-sun gules and a mountain vert.

47: Nycolas Sparrowe - New Name & New Device Accepted
Azure, three sea-pegasi argent.

48: Olafr the mercenary - Resub Device Accepted
Per pale argent and gules, a cross formy fitchy at the foot sable and a cross formy fitchy at the foot Or.

Our blazon is clumsy.  A far better suggestion has been made at Laurel: Per pale argent and gules, two crosses formy fitchy at the foot counterchanged sable and Or.

49: Onora Dovedale - New Device Accepted
Or, on a pile dovetailed azure in pale a dove descending and a four-leaf clover argent.

Gules, a reindeer trippant argent within an orle of wake knots head to tail Or

The originall submission upon which this resubmission is based was for Eithne Rannach na an tEilan Dubh and was returned at Laurel in March, 2002.  Originally, this name was submitted as Rignach verch Aniel Duib.  Due to its combination of Welsh and Picti name traditions, this was unacceptable.  We have changed the Welsh particle verch to the Latin filia which we believe will alllow registration.

53: Robert Rose of Inverness - New Device Accepted
Per chevron argent and sable, two wolves's heads erased close sable and on a cup argent a rose purpure.

54: Róis inghean uí Dhubhshláine - New Device Accepted
Or, a cauldron, on a chief azure three martlets Or.

55: Rúadhán O'Hara - New Name & New Device Returned
Per chevron vert and sable, two wolves passant and an oak tree argent.

This is returned due to problems with the name combination.  The combination of Gaelic with Anglicized Irish is a weirdness, per the Lingual Weirdness Table [http://www.ellipsis.cx/~liana/sca/weirdness_table.html].  And the temporal gap is the second SFPP.

The device is returned for conflict with Sine ni Mhoraig (9/07 East) -- Per chevron vert and sable, two mullets of eight points and a tree eradicated argent.  There is a CD for changing part of the group of primary charges.  However, X.2 does not apply:
Per chevron gules and argent, three oak trees counterchanged does conflict with Per chevron gules and argent, three fir trees counterchanged, because the type of charge has not been substantially changed; they both conflict with Per chevron gules and argent, two mullets and a fir tree counterchanged because not all of the primary charges have been substantially changed.

56: Rúadhán O'Hara - New Alternate Name Returned
Leonardo da Forli

While there is no problem with this name, it cannot be forwarded without the primary name, which is returned above.

57: Rychard Kempe - New Name Accepted & New Device Accepted with change of blazon
Sable, semy of hawks’ bells and on a chief Or an acorn between and conjoined to an oak leaf fesswise and an oak leaf fesswise reversed vert.

This was originally submitted as Sable, twenty hawks' bells, 4, 4, 4, 4, and 4 and on a chief Or two oak leaves fructed vert.  We altered the blazon.  However, I believe it may well be changed back to its original form at Laurel.

58: Sabine la courratierre de chevaux - Resub Device Accepted
Argent, a seahorse erect vert and a ford proper.

59: Sabine la courratierre de chevaux - New Badge Accepted
Argent, a seahorse erect vert, in chief two billets sable.

60: Satou Kenshin - New Name & New Device Accepted
Quarterly azure and argent, a tyger rampant contourny gules and in chief two lotus flowers affronty counterchanged.

The byname here is historically a name that Uesugi Kenshin took upon becoming a Buddhist monk.  We do not believe that this makes it unregisterable, however.

61: Thomas Ouswood - Resub Badge Accepted
(Fieldless) A lantern sable, enflamed vert.

62: Thracia of Espelenco - New Name Accepted

We have accepted this name, but we are not totally confident of it.  If it passes, it may well change form to Thracia Espelencos.

64: Trent Turner - New Name Accepted

Willehalm Bärenjäger - New Alternate Name Accepted

68: Wledir ferch Arthur - New Name & New Device Accepted
Argent, a chevron dovetailed between two unicorns combattant and a double-headed battle-axe purpure.

69: Yamamoto Tokutarou Hikaru - New Device Accepted
Gyronny azure and argent, on a hurt a Japanese dragon passant argent.

70: Ylva Vikarsdottir - New Name Returned

This name is returned because we have not been able to document Ylva.  We have not found any feminine names based on Ulfr that allow us to make the argument for Ylva as an alternate spelling.  We do have feminine names that begin with the correct prototheme, however.

This concludes our Letter of Report Æ131 dated November 16, 2010.
