Æthelmearc Letter of Report Æ140
December 16, 2011 (AS 46)

Greetings from Fridrikr Garnet and Alheydis Cornelian,
We would very much like to thank those who commented on this month's letter!
The items accepted on this letter have been forwarded to Laurel for further consideration, where we expect they will be decided on in March 2012.

1. Adelheid die Grünewalderin - New Name Changed

Assuming Grünewald is a place name, Grünewalder would be the expected masculine adjective for "man from Grünewald". The "in" (or perhaps inn) creates "woman from Grünewald" (in 13-1400 south), we expect the full "die Grünewalderin".

2. Cathán Ó Dubhagain - New Name and Device Accepted
Azure, semy of (nine) estoiles pierced Or, a decrescent argent.
3. Christina Mary Lowe - New Name Accepted and Device Accepted as redrawn
Argent, three cats sejant, heads to dexter, and a bordure sable.
4. Ekaterina Volkova - New Household Name Accepted and Badge Accepted with revised blazon
Malenkaya Staya
Per bend sinister sable and Or, two dogs courant contourny in annulo bend-sinisterwise counterchanged.

5. El{z.}bieta Traidenyt{e.} - New Device.
Or, a Russian firebird volant bendwise gules, wings addorsed, on a chief purpure three estoiles Or.

The Da'ud notation of the registered form of the name was restored.
We have changed the blazon to better reflect the emblazon.

6. Fridrich Flußmüllner - New Badge Accepted with revised blazon
Or
, a water-wheel gules within a bordure sable.

The field tincture was corrected from argent to Or to reflect the intent of the submitter.

7. Isabel Fleuretan Resubmitted - Name and Device Accepted
Azure, on a pile cotised argent, a fleur-de-lys azure.
8. Jocelyn of Tyburn - New Name Accepted
9. Kaedeyama Itachi - New Name and Device Returned
Azure, five Japanese maple leaves in annulo, conjoined at the stems, within a bordure argent.

No evidence was found to support "weasel" alone as a Japanese given name. Some evidence was found for the form waka+"dog"+maru as a young child's name, but the use of "weasel" in this construction is speculative.

10. Magnus de Lyons - New Name and DeviceAccepted
Azure, a lion and on a chief erminois, three mullets of ten points azure.
11. Margaret Grace - New Name Accepted and Device Returned
Per bend sister argent and vert, two trefoils slipped counterchanged

The arms conflict with Ioan Ó Muirgheasa of Strikkenwoode (reg. 07/2004 via the Middle), "Per bend wavy argent and vert, two trefoils counterchanged." There is a CD for the field, but none for the arrangement of the charges, which is forced, nor for the slipping.

12. Margery Kent of York - New Name Change Changed

Originally submitted as Margery Kent. We added the locative, of York, with the submitter's express permission to avoid conflict with <Margery of Kent> (reg. 08/1993 via Atenveldt).

13. Minamoto no Taikawa Saiaiko - New Device Accepted with revised blazon
Gules within a mascle fracted in saltire, an open fan argent.

14. Miriel du Lac - New Name Accepted
15. Rhiannon Elandris of Glyndyfrdwy - New Household Name and Badge Returned
House Dragancruit
Per pale vert and purpure, a dragon-bodied harp argent.

Sharon Krossa's Medieval Gaelic Clan, Household, and other group names (http://medievalscotland.org/scotnames/households.shtml) notes these patterns:

* Given name or patronymic byname of male ancestor.
* The full name of the head of the household (who is inevitably male)

In particular, the article notes:

Fanciful Names

Note that this means that currently there is no known evidence to support Gaelic group names using any variation of these patterns:

<group designator> <animal>
<group designator> <object>

And so names using any variation of the following patterns are even less plausible:

<group designator> <animal> <adjective>
<group designator> <object> <adjective>

16. Roxanne de Saint-Luc - New Name Changed and Device Returned
Sable, on a lozenge argent, a dragonfly sable.

Originally submitted as Roxanne de St.-Luc. We have expanded the abbreviation.

The arms conflict with Meryk the Rogue (reg. 04/1997 via the East), "Sable, on a lozenge argent a sea griffin contourny purpure," with one CD for the changes to the tertiaries. It also conflicts with Njáll the Wanderer (reg. 06/2000 via the Middle), "Sable, a lozenge fesswise per pale gules and purpure fimbriated argent," when it is interpreted as "Sable, on a lozenge argent another per pale gules and purpure," with the same count.

17. Thomas Dyne - New Name Accepted
This concludes our Letter of Report Æ140 dated December 16, 2011.
