AEthelmearc Letter of Report #AE41
May 28, 2000 C.E. / A.S. XXXV

1.) AEthelmearc, Kingdom of - resubmitted order name accepted, The Order of the Grand Caltrop

The previous submission, The Order of the Caltrop, was returned by Laurel in Oct. 1999 for conflict with Calontir's Caltrop Pursuivant.

There were some concerns that the name was somewhat abstract, but it is SCA acceptable.

2.) Adwen verch Gryffyn - new device accepted, name registered Jan. 2000

"Argent, in pale two crescents gules between flaunches vert."

Reminiscent, but clear of: Bevin O'Sullivan "Or, three crescents in pale sable, between flaunches vert."

3.) Cerridwen de Skene (F) - new name accepted

Interestingly enough, the commentary was almost unanimous on this one. Mixing Scots and Welsh and using Cerridwen probably counts as two weirdnesses, but if it is, let Laurel set the precedent. So be it.

4.) Constanza Marina de Huelva (F) - new name accepted

The documentation has been deleted here for brevity. It will be on the external letter. I've been convinced that "Marina", meaning "woman of the sea", is simply the feminine form of "sailor". I've also changed the place name to the documentable form.

5.) Danyel Clermont de Toulouse (F) - new name returned.

The name is actually well documented as a masculine name. However, the submitter specifically stated that she wants a feminine name and will not allow for any changes. She specifically wrote in, "no changes, send it back" So be it.

6.) Duarcan O'Raghailligh - new device accepted, name in process on #AE40

"Per fess vert and sable, in pale a cat passant and three lozenges in fess argent."

Please note, compatibility problems between my home computer and work may cause the accent marks to go away. I am aware of them and will take pains that they appear on the letter to Laurel.

7.) Edward O'Bannon (M) - new name and device accepted

"Vert, an Irish wolfhound courant argent between three trefoils or."

One group of commenters wanted to know if the breed was period. Encyclopedia Britannica dates them to 273 BC.

8.) FiNe ingen Choncatha (F) - new name accepted

Again, I am aware of the accent marks. They will appear on the external letter.

9.) Lodovic of Grays Inn - resubmitted device returned, name registered August 1995

"Purpure, a spiderweb throughout, on a chief argent, three spiders purpure."

Conflict with: Fabrisse ter Brugghe,"Purpure, a spider web and a chief argent".

The addition of spiders as tertiaries only counts for one difference.

10.) Magnus Jager -resubmitted device accepted, name registered March 1998

"Or a ram's head cabossed sable enflamed gules."

It might be in conflict with: Riordan Robert MacGregor, "Quarterly purpure and argent, a ram's head cabossed sable, armed Or." There is one CD for the field; is there a second for either the flames or the horns? This should probably be decided at Laurel.

11.) Marguerite d'Honfleur (F) - new name and device accepted

"Azure, semy of marguerites argent seeded or, on a bend or a needle threaded azure."

Name documentation deleted to conserve space. It will appear on the external letter. I've asked one of the regular artists to re-draw the emblazon in a slightly more standard depiction. Thanks, Myfanwy!

12.) Sean O'Faolain (M) - new name and device returned.

I mentioned that there was an early twentieth century Irish playwright of the same name, but that he was not famous enough to be protected. This is what I get for majoring in science instead of English. He does not appear in my set of Encyclopedia Britannica. Several commenters noted that he does appear in their copies of E.B. I verified it online at www.britannica.com. He is included in current editions and therefore is protected. The name will be returned for conflict.

"Gules, a bend between six bees Or" There were no problems with the device, however it must be returned as there is no longer a name to attach it to.

13.) Serena of Gaunt's Savoy (F) - new name held

Gaunt's Savoy is a palace in England in Chaucer's time. Jehan de la Marche, who's Ph.D. dissertation was done on this time period, has sent me rather extensive documentation indicating that while either Serena of Gaunt, or Serena of Savoy would be correct, the combination of the two would not be. Since the original submission gives me no indication of which she would prefer, I am holding this submission until I can contact her to learn her preferences.

14.) Una nic Daffydd (F) - new name and device accepted

Her name will be on the external letter, however NOT IN THIS FORM. Several heralds, more skilled in Gaelic than I am, are consulting with submitter via e-mail to create a more authentic name for her. She has not yet made a final choice as of press time.

"Per pale vert and gules, a lion statant and on a chief argent, three snails sable."

15.) Will Langdon of Greymorne - new badge accepted, name registered January 1987

"Argent, a two-horned anvil sable within an orle of six hammers proper."

16.) Ysabiau Visinant (F) - new name accepted

The documentation has been deleted here for brevity. It will be on the external letter. One commenter was so impressed with the documentation, he's keeping a photocopy of it to show his students what documentation should look like. Vivat!
