Letter of Intent #43
Debatable Lands Commenting Group

Unto Dagonell Collingwood, Garnet Herald, does Richenda du Jardin send greetings! Enclosed find the comments from the 18 June meeting of the Debatable Lands commenting group. The following people were present: Myfanwy verch Rhiannon, Brandubh S Donghaile, Hildarun Hugelmann, Ailis Linne, and Juliana de Luna, Gage Herald.

AEthelmearc ILoI #AE43

1. Ailionora ingen Fiachra

OC&M lists the Irish forms as <Eleanor> and <Eleanora>. That spelling of <Fiachra> is the late-period spelling. The last "o" of Ailionora is properly "s." Because it was introduced as a Norman name, the entire name should use the late-period orthography, which would make the name <Ailionsra inghean Fhiachrach>. The genitive form given came from "100 Most Popular" (Tang).

2. Ada von Heidelberg

Withdrawn

3. Catelin Parry called the Patient

Parry - <Morres Parry> is dated to 1527 (under <Parry> in R&W). In 10/99, Laurel declined to register <called the imaginour>, instead she registered <le ymagour>. Therefore, we suspect that <Catelin Parry the Patient> is more appropriate.

4. Christopher Harper

<Harper> is cited to 1490 in Bras.

The device appears to be clear of conflict. However, there was some discussion about how to blazon the position of the harp. The orientation of the harp should be blazoned from the pillar (the piece not attached to the strings), not from the soundbox -- as appears to be the case here. This harp appears to be halfway between bendwise and palewise. Our suggestion is an artist's note informing the submitter that the pillar should be drawn more upright.

5. Clement of Morocco

This conflicts with Paul of Bellatrix, "Sable, on a bend sinister Or three compass stars palewise gules." There is one CD for the change of tertiaries. We note that cotising the bend sinister would clear that conflict, and appears to otherwise be clear. We also note that this motif with a pean field appears to be clear. In addition, we find that giving the bend sinister a complex line seems to be clear. Please inform the submitter of the proper way to draw a hurst.

6. Edmund Lambert of Tregelles

We believe that this is in conflict with Stafford (important non-SCA armory), "(Tinctureless) A stafford knot." A Stafford knot is very similar in shape to this charge, and we feel that this would not be clear by X.2. Nevertheless, we note that James Qui Connait has registered (Fieldless) A pretzel vert, in September 1999.

7. Geiry Thorgrimsdottir

We were unable to find the form of the name she listed in Gierr Bassi; however we did find that Gierr Bassi (pg. 10) lists <Geiri> as a male name, <Geira> and <Geirn}> as female names. We are not sure which name she really wants.

8. Katheryne of Kringskiep

Juliana: "I took Katheryne's device form for redraw; I never saw her names form, I assumed you had it. She's Michael Langley's girlfriend; why don't you drop her an email?"

The device appears to be free from conflict.

9. Kaithren Rowand

The device appears to be clear.

10. Kirstyn von Tobel

This should be blazoned as "unicorn passant contourny;" other than that, we find absolutely no conflict with this submission.

11. Sueva the Short

There are lots of on-line assertions that <Sueva> is a period name; however, they are all from dubious genealogical sources.

The device is free from conflict. However, the chief should be reblazoned as "a chief barry wavy of 7 argent and vert."

12. Valgard inn Skalli Gunnarsson

<Valgard> is not found either in Friedemann or in Geirr Bassi. (Note: provide URL for Ari's article.) Instead, <Valgarpr> is the form of the name. Neither Geirr Bassi nor Friedemann suggest that <inn Skalli> is correct; it should be <skalli>. <Gunnarr> is cited on pg. 10 of Geirr Bassi. The correct patronymic form is as listed.
