Æthelmearc Internal Letter of Report #Æ43
October 10, 2000 C.E. / A.S. XXXV

Unto the Æthelmearc College of Arms and all unto whom these words come, warmest greetings from Dagonell Collingwood, Lord Garnet Herald.

Herein is the letter of report for Internal Letter of Intent #Æ 43. I would like to thank Lady Juliana de Luna, Her Ladyship Margaret Makafee and Lady Elizabeth Law for all of the work they have been and will be doing, writing all those letters of notification for me. It has been and will continue to be an enormous help to me.

I am also looking for someone to take over maintaining the Æthelmearc Heralds' Website. When I originally started the page, I was not the submissions herald. Much as I love writing web-pages, I no longer have the time to keep it up to date now that I'm in charge of submissions. It is currently about two letters behind. It is not a thankless job, I do receive e-mail telling me how much easier submission tracking has been (and asking me when the next update is ). Previous web page experience and a scanner are definite pluses, but not mandatory. Send your resume to myself and Edmund and will we probably announce our decision sometime around Twelfth Night.

01.) Ailionóra inghean Fhiachrach (F) – new name accepted

Ailionora – O'Corrain and Maguire, Irish Names, pg. 18

Fiachara – Ibid, pg. 98

The name has been modified to form the possessive and be internally consistent.

02.) Ada von Heidelberg (F) – new name withdrawn by submitter

03.) Catelin Parry the Patient (F) – change of name from Catelin the Patient accepted

Parry – Reaney, Dictionary of Surnames, pg. 339 (pce) Reaney & Wilson, (s.n. Parry) cites Morres Parry dated to 1527. She has also enclosed photocopies of her original name submission and the letter of acceptance from Laurel. The name was originally submitted as Catelin Parry called the Patient, however commentators cited numerous Laurel precedents for not registering the phrase "called the".

04.) Christopher Harper (M) – new name and device accepted

Christopher – Withycombe, pg. 65

Harper – Reaney & Wilson, pg. 218 identifies Reginald le Harper in 1275

"Per bend sinister sable and vert, a duck naiant argent and an Irish harp Or."

05.) Clement of Morocco – name registered, resubmitted device returned

"Sable, a bend sinister Or, charged with a hurst of trees sable."

Returned for conflict with Paul of Bellatrix "Sable on a bend sinister or, three compass stars palewise gules." Yes, it's that Paul of Bellatrix. His previous submission, with the field purpure, was returned in-Kingdom for conflict against Gwynffd of Ogg "Purpure, on a bend sinister Or, a blackbird perching upon a log sable, holding in its beak an annulet gules." His submission before that, with the field gules, was returned in-Kingdom for conflict against Sebastian of Ventburr "Gules on a bend sinister Or, three wings palewise, each terminating in a hand brandishing a sword sable." His submission before that was completely different and returned at Laurel for conflict. I want to thank the commentators for doing conflict checks on other fields. He's decided to go with 'Pean'. It's appropriate, considering all the 'pean' he's gone through with the submission process. However, he is the barony cook and I'm afraid I'll be getting bread and water at the next feast. Did I mention the cooks' guild also had their badge returned?

06.) Edmund Lambert of Tregelles – name registered, new device accepted

"Vert, a pretzel or."

Several commentators cited Stafford "(Tinctureless), a stafford knot.", which is mundane protected armory. However, James Qui Connait "(Fieldless), a pretzel vert." was registered in Sept 99. Based on that I'm going to pass it.

07.) Geirný Thorgrimsdottir (F) – change of name from Aralyn Ermintrude of the Falling Waters accepted

Geirný – Geirr Bassi, The Old Norse Name Book, pg. 10

Thorgrimsdottir – The standard patronymic formation from Thorgrim, Ibid. pg. 16. It should be noted that the submitter's father's SCA name is Thorgrim. If this name is accepted, her old name will be released.

08.) Katheryne aff Kringskiep – name registered, new device accepted

"Per fess argent and purpure, in pale two domesticated cats sejant erect affronty, sinister forepaw raised, counterchanged."

09.) Kaithren Rowand – name submitted ILoI #Æ40, resubmitted device accepted

"Gules, a griffin passant argent between three fleur-de-lys Or."

Her previous device was completely different and returned in-Kingdom for technical reasons.

10.) Kirstyn von Tobel – name registered, new device accepted

"Argent, a unicorn passant contourny purpure."

Clear of: Jolyon Draeger "Plummety argent and vert, a unicorn passant purpure." (1 CVD for field, 1 CVD for reversal of posture)

11.) Sueva the Short (F) – new name and device accepted

Sueva – Roberts, Gary Boyd ed., Notable Kin, An Anthology of columns first published in NEXUS, 1986-1995, Vol. I, published by the New England Historical Genealogical Society, pg. 37 cites Sueva Orsini to 1381. (pce)
The documentation is a bit 'iffy', but I'm going to pass it to Laurel.

the Short – The submitter included copious documentation for "Pepin the Short". Unfortunately, he would have been known in period as "Pepin le Petit". However, since English is the lingua fracta of the SCA, and the OED cites usage of the word back to pre-Chaucer, I'm going to pass it as is.

"Purpure, a dragon couchant argent, on a chief barry wavy vert and argent, three bees purpure."

12.) Valgardr Skalli Gunnarsson (M) – change of name from Konrad von Buren accepted

Valgard -- Friedemann, Sara L. Viking Names found in the Laudnámebók, pg. 4

Skalli – Ibid, pg. 11

Gunnarsson – Ibid, pg. 2

Online documentation may be found at <<http://www.sit.wisc.edu/~sfriedemann/names/vikbynames.htm>> The submitter will accept either "inn Skalli", (the bald pate), or simply "Skalli", as per Friedemann.

There was no indication of whether his other name is to be released or become a secondary persona. Could someone inquire of him?

For Your Information: The following items from previous letters will also be on the next internal letter

A.) Ingiridr Hikri Fridriksdottir – name registered, new device

"Or a sea unicorn contourny and in chief four escallops purpure."

The submitter's father informed me that the escallops had been drawn upside down on the internal letter from what the submitter wanted. I flipped them electronically for the external letter, and made arrangements to have the full size drawings re-drawn and forwarded to Laurel. Alas, the paperwork didn't catch up with the submission and Laurel returned it for incomplete paperwork. The paperwork is now complete and will be sent to Laurel 'in toto'. (Auntie Em! Auntie Em! The dog ate my submission again! )

B.) Odette d'Argues (F) – new name

Originally submitted as Joscelyn Odette d'Argues. I returned the name because commentators documented "Joscelyn" as masculine in period, and "Odette" as feminine. The submitter did not permit changes. I have received a letter from the submitter asking me to submit the name as indicated above. The device included with the submission, "Gyronny of eight or and argent, two ram's heads combattant azure and sable." was returned for poor contrast of the field.

C.) Miriam Meggett – name registered, new badge

"(Fieldless) a pitcher argent."

Her badge was returned at Laurel for conflict with Outlands, Kingdom of "Gyronny from dexter chief or and vert, a mug argent." She has obtained a letter of permission to conflict signed by Their Outlandish Majesties and Principal Herald.
