Æthelmearc External Letter of Intent #Æ43
December 16, 2000 C.E. / A.S. XXXV

Unto Dame Elsbeth Anne Roth, Laurel Queen of Arms, Lord Pietari Pentinpoika, Pelican King of Arms aid the members of the Society College of Arms and all unto whom these words come, warmest greetings from Lord Dagonell Collingwood, Garnet Herald for the Sylvan Kingdom of Æthelmearc.

Please note: My correct current address is: David P. Salley, 5294 Webster Road, Fredonia NY 14063. A number of people started sending letters back to my old address when it was mistakenly listed in the roster. Please update your address books if you have not already done so.

It is the intention of the Kingdom of Æthelmearc to register the following items.

01.)Ailionóra inghean Fhiachrach (F) - new name

Ailionóra - O'Corrain and Maguire, Irish Names, pg. 18

Fiachara - Ibid., pg. 98

The name was originally submitted as Ailonora ingen Fiachra. On the advice of my commentators, the name has been modified to form the possessive and be internally consistent. Because the name was introduced as Norman, it uses the late-period orthography. Numerous examples from the 9th through 16th century can be found in The Annals of the Four Masters (http://www.ucc.ie/celt/)

02.) Aralyn Ermintrude of the Falling Waters (F) - change of name to Geirny Thorgrimsdottir

Geirny - Geirr Bassi, The Old Norse Name Book, pg. 10

Thorgrimsdottir - The standard patronymic formation from Thorgrim, Ibid. pg. 16. It should be noted that the submitter's mother's SCA name is Thorgrim. If this name is accepted, her old name will be released.

03.) Catelin the Patient (F) - change of name to Catelin Parry the Patient

Parry - Reaney, Dictionary of Surnames, pg. 339 (pce) Reaney & Wilson, (s.n. Parry) cites Morres Parry dated to 1527. She has also enclosed photocopies of her original name submission and the letter of acceptance from Laurel. The name was originally submitted as Catelin Parry called the Patient, however internal commentators cited numerous Laurel precedents for not registering the phrase "called the".

04.) Christopher Harper (M)- new name and device

Christopher - Withycombe, pg. 65. St. Christopher was an early Christian saint. The Latin form of the name, Christopherus, is listed in the Curia Regis Rolls for 1201.

Harper - Reaney & Wilson, pg. 218 identifies Reginald le Harper in 1275.

"Per bend sinister sable and vert, a duck naiant argent and an Irish harp Or."

05.) Edmund Lambert of Tregelles - name registered, new device

"Vert, a pretzel or."

Several internal commentators cited Stafford "(Tinctureless), a stafford knot.", which is mundane protected armory. However, James Qui Connait "(Fieldless), a pretzel vert." was registered in Sept 99. Based on that I'm passing it to Laurel.

06.) Ingiridr Hikri Fridriksdottir - name registered, new device

"Or a sea unicorn contourny and in chief four escallops purpure.'

07.) Katheryne aff Kringskiep - name registered, new device

"Per fess argent and purpure, in pale two domesticated cats sejant erect affronty, sinister forepaw raised, counterchanged."

08.) Kaithren Rowand - name in process, new device

"Gules, a griffin passant argent between three fleur-de-lys Or."

Her previous device submission was completely different and returned in-Kingdom for technical reasons.

09.) Kirstyn von Tobel - name registered, new device

"Argent, a unicorn passant contourny purpure."

Clear of: Jolyon Draeger "Plummetty argent and vert, a unicorn passant purpure."

(1 CVD for field, 1 CVD for reversal of posture)

10.) Miriam Meggett - name registered, resubmitted badge "(Fieldless) a pitcher argent."

This badge was originally returned at Laurel for conflict with Outlands, Kingdom of "Gyronny from dexter chief or and vert, a mug argent." She has obtained a letter of permission to conflict signed by Their Outlandish Majesties and Principal Herald. (pce)

11.) Odette d'Arques (F) - new name

Odette - Withycombe, pg. 236 (s.n. Otttilia) cites it as "fairly common in France". There are no dates cited with this spelling variant, however it is a diminutive of Odille. St. Ottilia / Odille (German and French spellings) is the 7th century Patron Saint of Alsace.

d'Arques - of the Norman province Arques. The surname is listed in Sixteenth Century Norman Names by Triste Elliot (SCA: Cateline de la Mor) The names are taken from The Formation of a Provincial Nobility: The Magistrates of the Parlement of Rowen 1499-1610 by Jonathan DeWald. (http://www.panix.com/~mittle/names/cateline/norman16.html)

Originally submitted as Joscelyn Odette d'Arques. I returned the name because commentators documented "Joscelyn" as masculine in period, and "Odette" as feminine. The submitter did not permit changes. I have since received a letter from the submitter asking me to submit the name as indicated above. (pce)

12.) Sueva the Short (F) - new name and device

Sueva - Roberts, Gary Boyd ed., Notable Kin, An Anthology of columns first published in NEXUS, 1986-1995.Vol. I, published by the New England Historical Genealogical Society, pg. 37 cites Sueva Orsini to 1381. (pce)

the Short - The submitter included copious documentation for "Pepin the Short". Unfortunately, he would have been known in period as "Pepin le Petit". However, since English is the lingua fracta of the SCA, and the OED cites usage of the word hack to pre-Chaucer, I'm going to pass it as is.

"Purpure, a dragon couchant argent, on a chief barry wavy vert and argent, three bees purpure."

13.) Valgardr Skalli Gunnarsson (M) - change of name from Konrad von Buren

Valgardr - Friedemann, Sara L. Viking Names found in the Laudnámebók, pg. 4

Skalli -Ibid., pg. 11

Gunnarsson - Ibid., pg. 2

Online documentation may be found at http://www.sit.wisc.edu/~friedemann/names/vikbynames.htm

The submitter will accept either "inn Skalli", (the bald pate), or simply "Skalli", as per Friedemann.

This letter has 4 new names, 3 changes of names, 7 new devices and 1 resubmitted badge for a total of 14 actionable items. A check for $56 will be coming via separate letter from Lord Belgrande the Bladegatherer, the Chancellor of the Exchequer for Æthelmearc's College of Heralds.

In Service,
Dagonell Collingwood, Garnet
