Unto the Æthelmearc College of Arms and all unto whom these words come, greetings from Dagonell.
Merry Christmas!
As most of you know, I moved this last spring from a city house to a house in the country. For the first time in my life I'm celebrating an old-fashioned Country Christmas in country home with a real wood-burning fireplace in the living room. Now I know how our ancestors managed without television. :) I hope your holidays have been as wonderful as mine have been! So Merry Christmas, Blessed Solstice, Happy Hanukkah and Happy Kwanza, and Happy Holidays to all of you!
We have a new web-master! And a new web site. Cadell Blaidd du is the new official web-master for the new and improved Æthelmearc web page. If you send commentary via e-mail, please send a copy to Cadell at owaru@myfamily.org. The web page itself can be found at http://www.netcolony.com/arts/aeheralds. The old web page on my site is now a link to the new web page. Please update any bookmarks accordingly. We are working on getting him access to a scanner, so if you don't have e mail, you can send him commentary at: Trevor W. Schadt, 2352 Eldridge Street, Pittsburgh PA 15217, Attn: Cadell Blaidd du.
We are also starting a newsletter! I’ve seen the dummy proofs for The Æsch, and they look good. The newsletter will be starting up shortly after the new year. Once the newsletter is up and running, these internal letters of intent will become part of it along with all of your letters of comment. This will become part of the learning process for our newer heralds as they will be able to follow the discussions that now only occur via e-mail. Send your how-to articles, cartoons, letters of comment, upcoming heraldry event notices, editorials, etc. to Sue Wensel, 1155 Portland Street #2, Pittsburgh PA15206, Attn: Richenda du Jardin, Æsch editor.
Congratulations to Lord Bertran de Mellegwenn, Dominion Herald and Lord Geoffrey Montgomery, Sunderoak Herald, both of whom received AoA's within the past month for their heraldry work. Bertran received his at "A Day with de Medici's" (18 Nov. XXXV), and Geoffrey received his at A Celtic New Year (4 Nov. XXXV) Vivant! Vivant! Vivant!

In Memory of She had been a member of the SCA since 1977 and a herald for nearly all that time. She taught a large number of people the art of heraldry among other things, myself included. She will be greatly missed. A star has been named in her honor. It's in the left wing of the constellation Cygnus (The Swan) and will be rising in April. Donations may be made in her honor to either The Lion's Club Camp Dorset or The Kidney Foundation of Canada. A memorial web-page has been established at www.taylorsmithdesign.com/Avrll. Thank you. |
Heralds and Scribes was a wonderful event. I got a chance to attach faces to a number of people that I know only as a signature on a letter of comment. Vivats to Mistress Cori and His Lordship Edmund for a fascinating set of classes. I have request to pass on. One gentle there showed me his heraldry binder. He has EVERY AEthelmearc letter of intent and letter of report every published... except one. He's missing AE#4. This would have been published when Fridrikr was Silver Buccle Herald. So, if you've been doing this since forever, and you have all your files, and you're willing to make a photocopy, please contact me. I'd like to see him have the complete set myself He's promised to look up any historical records I need. Thank you.
We have a couple of minor complaints about each other. You first. A number of people have noted that I've been putting accent marks in the wrong place on some of the names. Guilty. Please bear in mind that I'm usually reading something handwritten and making my best guess as to where the mark belongs. I've been relying heavily on some of you to correct me. Please accept my apologies and continue doing your excellent job of proofreading. Eventually, I'll learn this stuff and be able to put the marks in their proper place. I've also been asked to capitalize the tincture 'Or', as it makes more work for Laurel's staff if I don't. I will comply, however I've been riding this particular horse for so long, that the lower case version no longer looks incorrect to me. I will be more diligent about proofreading the letter and using the search commands to find all the usages. And my personal thanks to those individuals who wrote and said they agreed with me and that I should stick to my guns. Thank you, but I've decided to fight this battle on a different front. :)
My turn. No less than nine submissions on this letter came incomplete. They were either missing miniatures, had 'black and white' copies of the colored form rendering all the charges as black, or they were on obsolete forms. I CANNOT forward this kind of submission to Laurel. It will only be rejected and make Æthelmearc look bad. In the spirit of Christmas, I have tried to correct as many of these as possible for this letter. I cannot continue to do this. As of January first, I will become Ebeneezer Grinch! ALL incomplete submissions will returned. :( Please make sure that you have the correct number of color copies and miniatures and SASE's and that the black and white copies are proper outline forms.
As always, you are welcome to comment on all or any part of this letter. E-mail is strongly encouraged. Send comments to: Lord Dagonell Collingwood, Garnet Herald; c/o David P. Note from Garnet: This a summary of over twenty pages of documentation being forwarded to Laurel.
Pleased find enclosed an appeal of the registration of Mary MacLeod, done in October, 1999. We ask that the name be registered as originally submitted, Maura MacLeod.
The reason for the change of "Maura MacLeod" to "Mary MacLeod" cited in the October 1999 LoAR was: "No documentation was given showing that Maura was a period given name… We have therefore replaced the given name with a documented form." The first submission cited 0' Corrain and Maguire, p.130. Under the citation of Maire, Maura is indicated as an English variant.
Since this decision, we have researched the name "Maura" more thoroughly, and submit the following:
1. Butlers Lives of the Saints (the flill four-volume set) identifies four saints named "Maura." Most notable among them is Maura of Troyes, who is said to have died on September 21, 850 (September 21 -pp.610-il). Other Mauras mentioned in Butlers include: Saint Maura, possibly born in Northumbria in the 5th century (July 13 - pp.88-89), Saint Maura, of whom little is known except that she was a virgin saint and that a cult to her was active in the time of the Emperor Julian (July 23 - p.171), and Maura, wife of Timothy, both of whom were martyred circa 286 (May 3 - pp.223-224).
It should also be noted that Butler mentions several men named Maurus, including Bd Rabanus Maurus (February 4 - p.249-251), Archbishop of Mainz (circa 856), who was taught by Alcuin (advisor to Charlemagne). Alcuin is said to have given him the nickname Maurus, afier the favorite disciple of Saint Benedict. Also named is Saint Maurus (January 15 - p.97), a saint who is believed to have died on January 15th, 584. Butler states the opinion that there is little evidence to suggest that he is the same Maurus who was a disciple of Saint Benedict mentioned previously. Maura is the feminization of Maurus in Latin.
2. The Catholic Online website also recognizes Maura of Troyes, and indicates that the life of Saint Maura was documented by Saint Prudentius of Troves, who is said to have known her. http://www.catholiconline.org/saints/saints/mauratroyes.html.
3. The name Maura is also found in Scotland, in a town called Kilmaurs, in Ayrshire, where there is a church commemorated to a Saint Maura, who is said to have died in 899. Her feast day is celebrated in November. The name of the village derives from the Gaelic "cil," and Maura, the Saint for whom it is named. It should be noted that one source spells her name as "Maure" and one spells ft as "Maura." The church at Kilmaurs is described as "ancient" and is mentioned in public records as early as 1174.

Finally, we would mention that the name Maura has been registered by the College eleven times. The most recent registration was in November 1995, when it was registered twice.
