Letter of Intent #49
Margaret Makafee, Cornelian Herald

Unto Lord Dagonell Collingwood, Garnet, and all those to whom thesewords shall come, Margaret Makafee, Cornelian, sends greetings and fondcommendations.

Here are my comments on A49.

1. A/ine ingen Morgainn ui/ Diarmata

If you pass this name (and I see no reason why you should not) be sureto include the URLs for the documentation in the LoI:www.medievalscotland.org/scotnames/simplescotgaelicnames12.shtml, andwww.s-gabriel.org/names/tangwystyl/irish100/

These are not terribly well drawn triskeles--triskeles tend to be morerounded. No conflicts found.P>

2. Alaxandair O/ Cochobhair

His current name was registered in April 2000.

A search of the CELT Irish Text Database reveals several hundredmatches for "Conchobhair" in combination with "mac" "mic" "ua" and"ui". (www.ucc.ie/celt/search.html)

No conflicts found.

3. Antoinette de la Croix

Looks good to me.

4. Bertrand du Beaumanoir

The 1292 Paris Census, www.sca.org/heraldry/laurel/names/paris.htmlhas a Bertran le bastier and a Bertrant le plastrier.

Nice documentation for the tennis racquet. Given the shape, therewould be a visual against two mirrors in this configuration, butnothing much like this appears to be registered.

5. Colin MacWilliams

6. Degan of Coventry

Close, and possibly in conflict with JohnFitzGerald de Clare, Gules, a chevron embattled ermine between threeLatin crosses bottony argent, each enfiled bendwise of a countycoronet Or. There is nothing for the field, or primary charge. Thereis clearly a CD for the number of secondary charges, and there MAY beone for type for the coronets, although that's not as clear. However, making the bordure ermine as well as the chevron should clear theconflict nicely.

7. Deirdre ingean Dhomnaill

Possible conflict with Ivan Gregorivich "Per bend sinister argent andsable, a prickly pear flower gules seeded Or, leaved of acanthusvert." However, I'd advise passing it with a note to Laurel to checkthe files against this one.

8. Elizabeth McGrigour

MacGrigor says "see MacGregor", so let's see how close we can getthese. Under MacGregor he lists the form McGrigour to 1586. And, justto be exact about it, the article Feminine Given Names in King'sStanley Marriages: 1573-1600,http://www.s-gabriel.org/names/mari/kingsstanley/FemGivenNamesAlpha.htmlgives the spelling in 1585 and 1587.

Squeak, just clear of Daniel de Tankard (reg 12/74) Gules, a tankardof beer Or headed argent." There is a CD for removing the secondaries, and by da'ud 2 precedent, a CD for a tankard vs a chalice.

9. Fordwin Marchand

Reaney and Wilson, p 174 sn Fordwin, give Richard filius Fortwin in1221 and William Fordwin in 1208. They derive the surname from the OEFor{d=}wine.

Reaney and Wilson, p 298 sn Marchant lists a Roger Marcand (Marchand')in 1202 and a Ranulph le Marchand in 1240, and derive the name fromthe OFr occupational term marchand.

No conflicts found.

10. Geoffrey of York

I don't believe the name is registered, although it appears to be freeof conflict. Perhaps someone should contact Geoffrey, since I'm surehe'd be happy to get this taken care of.

No conflicts found.

11. Laurette de Montasalvy

Withycombe, p 191, sn Laura, gives Lauretta in 1203, and says that itis a diminutive of Laura (she also says that Laurencia is the Latinform). Reaney and Wilson, p 273, give Laurette as a header form andsite a Lauretta Picot in 1185. Still, if Laura or Laurincia can befound in French name space, this would be a reasonable diminutive.

Hanks and Hodges are almost certainly wrong if what they actually sayis "Monta" is a name from someone living on or near a hill. Justplain "Mont" + "name" is usual form found in both English and French.

A web search on "Montsalvy" reveals a french place in Auvergne by thatname. My bad french reads it as a mountain with much tourist/climbingappeal. My guess is that, without the "a", it's an acceptable Frenchbyname.

I'm not certain that this is a valid depiction of trefoilly--a trefoilis not usually drawn as three roundels conjoined. Are the birdconjoined at the beak? If so, this should be blazoned. The first"purpure" may be safely dropped from the blazon. No conflicts found.

12. Lyon Wolfram

Unless there is some very strange coincidence at work, this isactually a resubmission of a a kingdom return done fairly early in mytenure: Lyon von Wolfram, with the device essentially identical to theone here (as I recall, it's been a long time).

Device is clear of Seadna Adhare, "Per chevron azure and argent, twowolves combattant argent and an oak tree proper" with one CD for thetincture of the primary charge group, and one for a substantial changeof type of the lowermost charge in the primary charge group..

13. Myfanwy ferch Rhiannon

Don't forget to divide this into two separately numbered items for theELoI.

The device squeaks clear of Kara of Clan Neil, "Per pale azure andpurpure, three unicorns couchant argent", with a CD each for field andarrangement of primary charges.

No conflicts found for the badge.

Having nothing further to say I will cease to bother your further. Iremain as always
