Letter of Intent #49
Heraldic Flying Circus Commenting Group

Unto Lord Dagonell Collingwood, Garnet Herald of the glorious Sylvan Kingdom of Æthelmearc, come Greetings from the Heraldic Flying Circus and Moving Company!

Herewith our commentary on ILOI #Æ49, dated 27 Feb 2001, from our meeting of 18 March 2001:

01.) Áine ingen Morgainn uí Diarmata

New Device: There was some discussion whether this triskele is correctly drawn. PicDic, item 756, shows a triskele as a triskelion arrondi, and states that "[t]he embowment is part of the definition; without it, the design would simply be three charges conjoined in pall." The debate was whether these angular charges were simply an artistic variation, or whether they would be better blazoned as "triskelions", or even have their angularity blazoned in some way, although no one was quite sure how this would be done.

02.) Alexander Ó Conchobair

Change of name to Alaxandair Ó Conchobhair: Cigfran points out that spelling the patronymic with "bh" is modern Gaelic, but still acceptable.

08.) Elizabeth McGrigour

New Device: The chalice, as drawn, looks like a bell inverted. It should have a wider base, so that it will stand up. Can't go spilling drinks, can we?

09.) Fordwin Marchand

New Device: The bordure is indented. Only a two-sided ordinary may be dancetty.

11.) Laurette de Montasalvy

New Name: It is our understanding that Loughead is no longer considered an acceptable source. There is a vague memory of a Montesalvat involved in the Albigensian Crusade, but I have been unable to pin down a reference. This name needs a bit of tweaking, but it can probably be documented.

New Device: Is there any documentation for the use of this line of division in period? There was also some discussion whether it was necessary to blazon the birds as "rising".

13.) Myfanwy ferch Rhiannon

New Badge: For the sake of consistency, this should be explicitly blazoned as "[Fieldless]...". Also, the unicorn is couchant.

16.) Tristan Ravencrest

New Name: The key to this is either to document "-crest" as a by-name element, or to find "-crest" as a toponymic element (as in "crest of a hill") and convince the submitter that he really wants the sound of the name. Although I have nothing to back it up, it seems to me that naming someone after their crest is unlikely, seeing as the canting process usually goes the other way. However, using a crescent as a cant on "crest" is not as odd as some of the mundane cants I've seen.

Respectfully submitted this 27th day of March, A.S. XXXV
