Unto Lord Dagonell Collingwood of Emerald Lake, Garnet Herald for the Sylvan Kingdom of Æthelmearc, does Otfrid Ammerthaler send warmest Greetings!
Here are my comments on ILOI #AE52 (note that these are purely my comments, and not those of the Heraldic Flying Circus and Moving Company):
03.) Aleyne of Ravenswood
New Name: I had thought that our own Bethoc of Ravenswood would be the most recent such name registered, but " John of Ravenswood" was registered May 2000 in Atlantia.
04.) Ann of Banningham
New Device: The aeolipile is drawn somewhat in trian aspect, but this aids in identifiability. Note the ruling of Jaella of Armida in a similar case: "While we do not normally show objects in trian aspect, we see no problem with making the default wedge of cheese to be in trian aspect since it aids in identifiability, as in the case of dice or tabors." (Michael Houlihan, 9/97 p. 1) [http://www.sca.org/heraldry/laurel/jaeprec.html#Foodstuffs]. Note also that, while the puffs of steam make the depiction appear dynamic, again they aid in identifiability, as they do in an aeolus [Pic Dic, under "wind", #797].
09.) Chrestienne de Waterden
New Device: Just because it isn't mentioned explicitly, according to the Æthelmearc Order of Precedence, she was made a court baroness on 09/19/98.
10.) Chrestienne de Waterden
New Badge: Although there are examples of badges with words on them (perhaps the most famous example being the "ICH DIEN" of the Black Prince [Basic Heraldry by Stephen Friar and John Ferguson, p.40]), This comes awfully close to being a motto, however, and traditionally, these have not been registered .(Wilhelm von Schlüssel [51] [CL 20 Sep 81], p. 2: "If you wish to use supporters, crests, or mottoes, you are free to do so, but the College of Arms will not register them..."
[http://www.sca.org/heraldry/laurel/precedents/wilhelm/atoc.html#achievement]) Even if this is registerable, does she really want it in a lower-case modern typeface?
11.) Coletta Briant
New Device: " A harp proper is, like all other wooden charges, brown." (Da'ud ibn Auda,5/94, p.10 [http://www.sca.org/heraldry/laurel/precedents/daud2/armory4.html#PROPER])
15.) George Eisenfaust
Resub Device: It might be better to explicitly state that the charges are "in chief" and "in base", respectively, to keep the blazon from being mis-drawn as a gauntlet between three octagons.
20.) Magariki Kautsuichi
New Name: The given name is written "Kautsuichi" in the heading, but "Katsuichi" in the body. I believe the extra "u" in the heading is a typo.
New Device: Note that this motif appears in Japanese Design Motifs: 4,260 Illustrations of Japanese Crests, compiled by the Matsuya Piece-Goods Store (Dover, 1972), p.198, box 16.
30.) William MacNess
New Device: This is more correctly blazoned "Gules, semy of hearts Or."
Until next month I remain
Yours in Heraldic Service,
Otfrid Ammerthaler
