Letter of Intent #53
Heraldic Flying Circus Commenting Group

Unto Lady Juliana de Luna, Garnet Herald of the glorious Sylvan Kingdom of

Æthelmearc, come Greetings from the Heraldic Flying Circus and Moving Company!

Herewith, our comments on ILOI #AE53, cover-dated October, 2001:

01.) Adriana Michaels

New Name: The feminization of a Latinate name by the addition of -a seems reasonable.

02.) Anastasia Tremayne

New Name: Withycombe pp.21-2 (3d ed.) dates "Anastasia" with this spelling to 1220.

New Device: The tree is "blasted and sundered". The submission is clear of:

Gwalchmai Wynber vap [sic] Bran

The following device associated with this name was registered in November of 1988 (via An Tir):
Per chevron argent and vert, two ravens rising addorsed, wings displayed, sable, and a fir tree argent
1CD for field, 1 for tree sable vs. argent.

03.) Annanias en la Fenne

New Device: There was some discussion whether the "per bend" should start in dexter chief, running under the chief, or at the lower edge of the chief, as drawn. Personally, I feel it is drawn correctly, as I don't recall ever seeing a line of division being cut off as suggested, but I can't find any evidence to back this up.

The device is clear of:

Marion de Gael

The following device associated with this name was registered in July of 1999 (via ):
Argent ermined vert, a rose proper and a chief vert.

1 CD for field, 1 for tincture of chief.

04.) Baldric of Blackwater

New Device: Alternating stripes of gules and Or do not constitute flames. The mane and tail should be re-drawn correctly.

05.) Bastien Eisengart

New Name: Which Deutsches Namenlexikon is being cited here? Author?

New Device: No conflicts found.

07.)Brann MacNaughton

New Name: (Cigfran) While the additional -n would be unlikely in the original Welsh, it would not be unreasonable in a Scots or Irish version.

08.) Bressal Maccolloch

New Device: Nice!

10.) Ciar ingen ui Maille

New Device: Smaller bordure, bigger trees.

11.) Colin MacWilliams

Resub Badge: No conflicts found.

14.) David of Sterlyngevayle

Resub Device: This is more correctly blazoned "Quarterly gules and Or..."

15.) Deirdre ingean Dhomhnaill

New Badge: This would be more simply blazoned as "contourney".

17. Egill the Dane

New Badge: This is more correctly blazoned as"...gyronny of eight azure and Or." No conflicts found.

18.) Emelyne le Tresor

New Device: (polite applause) Very nice armory!

19.) Ethne an Locha

New Device: There isn't enough of the line of division visible to make it identifiable. (Although if you look carefully, it is invected, not engrailed as blazoned.)

20.) Faílenn de Céarsaigh

New Name: There is a question of consistency between the "early form" given name and the 13th Century toponymic.

23.) George Anne

Resub Device:

Alt. #1: I think this is supposed to be "Argent chaussé vert, a frog tergiant inverted sable."

Alt. #2: The crescent is not readily identifiable through all the counterchanging.

24.) Gregory of Glencairn

New Device: We do not have a copy of Foster available to check this, but we wish we did!

25.) Grimbald Deth

New Name and Device: Although skulls are a perfectly good cant for a surname like "Deth", to quote our recently-moved -away Lontrallo,"He'd better be able to cash that check!"

27.) Hannah Rosenberg

New Device: It's a mullet of six.

28.) Hierytha Storie

New Device: There was a general consensus that a lemming is not identifiable as such in a heraldic context. Guesses included "a bear", "a badly-drawn rabbit", and "a mouse with its tail cut off".

29.) Khazira bint Hakim

Resub Device: No conflicts found.

31.) Laurette de Montsalvy

Resub Device: The first "purpure" is redundant. The chief is engrailed, not invected as blazoned.

No conflicts found.

33.) Leofwynn Kyndheir

New Device: The "horned owl" should have horns -it would look much more owly.

35.) Maeve Egan

New Device: It should perhaps be specified that the charges on the pale are in pale -since they are tall and thin, they could conceivably be in fess. ( It would be no less unlikely than their current arrangement.(snark))

36.) Malcolm Fraser

New Device: This may conflict with:

Jennet of Twominds

· Either the name or the following device associated it (or both) were registered in March of 1975:
Per pale argent and sable, a sun in his splendor throughout of the field, rayed and featured counterchanged.

40.) Miraud d'Avignon

New Device: The correct plural is fleurs-de-lis.

41. Miraud d'Avignon

New Badge: No conflicts found.

43.) Morien MacBain

Resub Device: First, the field is "...crusilly crosslet...". Second, as drawn it is not clearly crusilly, but looks like a Maltese cross with some fuzz between three crosses crosslet. The small crosses should be smaller and more numerous. No conflicts found.

44.) Rachel Armstrong

New Device: The paw prints must be specified to be palewise. The second "argent" should go at the end.

47.) Therion Sean Storie

New Household Name: The Oxford English Dictionary Online dates "leming" (one m) to 1713, although "lemmar" and "lemmus" appear in English in 1607, from a Latin text from 1555.

New Household Badge: As in #28, the lemming does not appear to be an identifiable charge. No conflicts found.

49.) Wulfer von Drachenhand

New Badge: This would be clearer as" Fieldless, a dragon's jambe palewise sustaining a roundel embattled per pale vert and sable charged with a decrescent argent."
