Unto Lady Juliana de Luna, Garnet Herald of the glorious Sylvan Kingdom of
AEthelmearc, come Greetings from the Heraldic Flying Circus and Moving Company!
Herewith, our comments on ILOI #AE56:
3. Alheydis von Körckhingen
New Name: Is the locative supposed to be "Körckhingen" or "Körckingen"? The documentation supports the first version, but not the second.
New Device: No potential conflicts of any significance were found.
4. Alina Marie de Valenciennes
Clear of (but visually similar to):
Teresa von Asselen registered in June of 1989 (via Ansteorra):
"Per bend gules and sable, a bend cotised between two
garden roses bendwise, slipped and
leaved, Or."
6. Anna Maria de Wittes
New Device: The point should be bigger.
7. Antoinette de la Croix
New Device: It's a long shot, but does this run afoul of the protection of a fleur-de-lys Or on azure?
14. Carlo Garlucci
New Name: Is the name on his driver's license "Galluci" or "Garlucci"?
15. Connor M'Eleam
New Household Name: We do not think the designator "House" is necessary. It's not really period anyway.
New Badge: Is it necessary (or desirable) to specify the positions of the heads?
17. Daniel Lightfoot
Change of Name: "Daniel of Endless Hills" was registered in Æthelmearc in June 2000. The citation from Withycombe is on p.78.
19. Dubheasa inghean Dhougaill
New Name: O'Corrain & Maguire p.78 gives the form "Dubh Easa" (two words), and on p.79 cites the Irish form "Dubgall" and says it was "especially common among the McSweeneys and O Boyles in the later middle ages." Since the rest of the name is Irish, the father's name would be better in an Irish form as well. We aren't quite sure what the correct genitive would be, however.
New Device: This conflicts with Karl Faustus von Aachen, "Bendy azure and Or, three reremice gules." -one CD for field only.
20. Duncan MacAengus of Skye
Resub Name: Black, p.228 gives Duncan Sithechson, leader of Clan Morgan c. 1150. Black,p.23 gives "Angus" as a header form, but no evidence for the spelling "Aengus".
21. Elizabeth Conney
New Name: 16th Cent. citation for "Elizabeth"? How about "Elizabeth I, b.1553"? According to Withycombe, "...at the end of the 15th Century, [Elizabeth] was still a comparatively rare name. By 1560, it accounted for 10% of female baptisms."
22. Fearghus mac Eoin
New Name: Note that "Fearghus" is the modern Gaelic form. Black, p. 259 gives "Feargus" as the middle Gaelic form. It also gives "Fercos" as a unique form found in a Gaelic charter of 1408. Note that the cited URL's have changed; they are now http://medievalscotland.org/scotnames/gaelicgiven/men/fearghus.shtml and
http://medievalscotland.org/scotnames/gaelicgiven/men/eoin.shtml .
New Device: Clear of:
Magnúús Slembidjáákn, registered in
October of 2000 (via Artemisia):
"(Fieldless) A boar statant contourny gules." ("Zen" CD, one for
orientation of boar.)
Tearlach na Drochaide, registered in September of 1997 (via
AEthelmearc):
"(Fieldless) A boar statant vert." ("Zen" CD, one for tincture of
primary.)
26. Juliana de Beaujeau
New Name: Note that the reference to Dauzat and Rostaing is on p.62
New Device: No potential conflicts of any significance were found..
27.Kendrick of Ruthven
New Name: Reaney & Wilson p.263 dates Kendrick to 1602, and cites a "Kenwrig ap Madog Duy" in 1391. The Wee Guides to Scotland, at (http://www.scotland2000.com/weeguides/castles/92.htm, say that Hungtingtower Castle, Perth, "... was held by the Ruthvens from the 12th century, and was originally called Ruthven Castle." 'Tis a guid Scots name, but not terribly authentic if he wants to be English English..
31. Otelia d'Alsace
New Name: I believe this conflicts with: Thomas de Castellan registered in December of 1994 (via the East): "(Fieldless) Four fleurs-de-lys conjoined in saltire, bases to center, Or". Since there is no field to orient the charges, it would be very difficult to distinguish between the two badges.
35.Remus Fletcher
Resub Badge: From The Oxford English Dictionary Online (http://dictionary.oed.com/entrance.dtl) s.v. crotal1
"2. Irish Antiq. Applied to a small
globular or pear-shaped bell or rattle, the nature and use of
which are obscure: see quots. Also attrib.
[1156 JOHN OF SALISBURY Polycrat. VIII. xii,
Crotala quoque dicuntur sonorææ
sphæærulææ, quææ, quibusdam granis
interpositis, pro quantitate sui et specie metalli, varios
sonos edunt.] 1790 LEDWICH Antiq. Ireland
243 The Chrotal seems not to have been a Bardic
Instrument; but the Bell-Cymbal used by the Clergy, and denominated a
Crotalum by the Latins.
1845 Proc. R. Irish Acad. 135 A
communication..to shew that the article called a crotal..had
properly but one disc, and not two, as represented in Ledwich's
Antiquities. 1872 ELLACOMBE
Ch. Bells Devon 378, I would..confine the term Crotal
to those pear-shaped and globular
productions, the exact use of which is evidently very doubtful. Ibid
379 Those round crotal bells
in figure resemble an apple, and this instrument was evidently intended
to make a rattling noise
when shaken."
Since even the experts seem to have their doubts about what a crotal bell is, exactly, I'm not sure it's a good term to use. For the sake of future scribes, I think this would better be blazoned as a hawk's or dancer's bell.
36. Ríona de Fae
New Name: If she wishes to preserve the sound of the name, is she aware that it is pronounced <ree-na>, not <ree-oh-na>?
38. Ruaidri MacAoidh
New Device: Device -- Possible Conflicts:
Kateryn of Falconkeep, registered in January of 1995 (via An Tir):
"Azure, on a plate a falcon displayed sable, a base embattled argent."
Robin Anderson of Ross, registered in January of 2000 (via Ansteorra):
"Azure, on a roundel argent a bird migrant sable, in chief three daisies argent seeded Or."
Damian Nihthauk, registered in May of 1992 (via the Middle):
"Sable, on a plate a falcon migrant sable and a point pointed Or."
39. Sara de Lindley
New Device: No potential conflicts of any significance were found.
40. Seth Mac Michael
New Device -- No gorillas have been registered in the Society before. According to the RFS, we should submit some evidence that a gorilla was known to Europeans in period. However, the following registration does appear in the armorial, (under the heading of "Beast -- Monkey"):
Ysabeau de Véézelay, registered in October of 1998 (via ): "Purpure, an ape passant Or."
From The Oxford English Dictionary Online (http://dictionary.oed.com/entrance.dtl) s.v. gorilla
"[An alleged African name for a wild or hairy man (strictly for the female only), preserved (in acc. pl. ) in the Greek account of the voyage undertaken by the Carthaginian Hanno in the 5th or 6th c. B.C.; hence adopted in 1847 as the specific name of the ape Troglodytes gorilla, first described by Dr. T. S. Savage, an American missionary in Western Africa.]"
Unfortunately, I'm afraid this establishes that the beast was unknown in Europe in period. (But does anyone else think it's cool that the gorilla was discovered by Doc Savage?)
41. Shire of Stormsport
Change of Device: From Edmund: "The wreath is too oval, and should be redrawn. Trust me on
this. I am not sure environed is the best word here in the blazon, but what do I know?" Also, the blazon says "embattled", the emblazon shows raguly -which do they want?
Possible Conflicts:
Somalia registered in September of 1995 (via Laurel):
"Azure, a mullet argent." Important non-SCA flag
Andrew Greencloak Hethilsson, registered in July of 1986 (via the Middle):
"Per chevron argent and vert, in base a mullet of four points argent."
42. Theoderic Hellehunt
New Name -- I found one URL: http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Acropolis/5145/german.html,
which has the article as "unavailable". I also found it here:
http://www.florilegium.org/files/NICOLAA/names-Ger-art.html.
The article does identify Theoderic as a "Gothic" name.
New Device: No potential conflicts of any significance were found.
43. Thomasina Bernes
New Name: Withycombe p. 40 cites (s.n. "Burneys") a "John Bernes" from 1356.
New Device: No potential conflicts of any significance were found.
44. Tobias Craythorne
New Name:Reaney & Wilson (s.n. "Tobias") gives a "Tobias Prior" from 1142, and on p.115 (s.n. "Craythorne" shows a "William de Craytherne", 1343, and a "Robert Craythorn", 1509.
New Device: No potential conflicts of any significance were found.
45. William le Forestier
New Device: No potential conflicts of any significance were found.
