Comments on Æthelmearc ILoI #56, February 2002 Ravenstongue Commenting Group (Lord Bruce MacCulloch, Lord Christopher Harper, Lady Kristin i harfagra, and Jean Ancelin)

#1 ^Ö Adachi Masamori ^Ö new name and device Azure, two katanas crossed in saltire within a torii proper As per request, ^ÓAzure two katanas crossed in saltire proper within a torii Or^Ô was checked. It conflicts with Juelda of Salisbury (Azure a dolmen Or). There is only one CD for addition of a charge.

#3 ^Ö Alheydis von Korckhingen - new name and device Or, a goblet azure within a bordure azure semy of decrescents argent. Reblazon: Or, a goblet within a bordure azure semy of decrescents argent. The ^Óazure^Ô after ^Ógoblet^Ô is redundant.

#4 ^Ö Alina Marie de Valenciennes ^Ö new device Her previous device was returned at Kingdom on LOR #47, February 27, 2001.

#6 ^Ö Anna Marie de Wittes ^Ö new device Azure, in dexter chief a crescent argent, on a point pointed ployé Or an ankh sable This device does not have any conflicts and is registerable. However, the crescent almost looks like an augmentation and causes the device to be non-symmetrical. Adding another crescent in sinister chief would correct that.

#7 ^Ö Antoinette de la Croix - new device Her name was submitted on ILoI AE49, February 27, 2001, and submitted to Laurel on XLoi AE49 July 15, 2001. It has not yet been registered.

#9 ^Ö Arthur Kinsman - new device His name was registered in December of 1992 via the East.

#11 ^Ö Barak ben David - change of device His name and device (Argent, a caltrap within a bordure sable) were both registered in October of 1989 via the East.

#12 ^Ö Cadell Blaidd Du - new badge His name was registered in November of 1997.

#14 ^Ö Carlo Garlucci - new name and device "Italian Names from Florence, 1427" can be found at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~torchia/names/firenznames.htm and the actual list itself is at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~torchia/names/namesf.txt The submitter wishes to register Galluci, not Garlucci.

#15 ^Ö Connor M'Eleam - new household name Talbot's Keep and badge His name was registered September 1997. Then this conflicts with the heraldic title "Talbot Herald", registered to England (via Laurel) in August of 1987. Changing the name to "House Talbot's Keep" or something similar removes this conflict. This change would be registerable, if not very period in construction.

#16 ^Ö Connor M'Eleam - new badge (Fieldless) A caltrop per pale argent and Or. See above for date of name registration. As a side note, since the name "Order of the Grand Caltrop" was withdrawn and replaced with "Order of the White Horn", perhaps those who make such decisions might consider withdrawing its associated device?

#17 ^Ö Daniel Lightfoot - name change from Daniel of Endless Hills His name was registered July 2000.

#18 ^Ö Debatable Lands, Barony-Marche of the - new badge The name was registered in December 1975.

#19 ^Ö Dubheasa inghean Dhougaill ^Ö new name and device This name could perhaps be better constructed as ^ÓDubheasa inghean Dhùghaill^Ô. (Black, MacDougall)

#21 ^Ö Elizabeth Conney - new name and device "Elizabeth" is documented as the most popular women's name during 1581-1595 at "Late English 16C English Given Names" by Talan Gwynek, at http://www.s-gabriel.org/names/talan/eng16/

#22 ^Ö Fearghus mac Eoin - new name and device Argent, a boar statant gules This conflicts with Tadgg h-ua Faelan: (Fieldless) A boar passant gules. There is one CD for fieldlessness, but none between statant and passant.

#23 ^Ö Hunter^Òs Home, Shire of ^Ö change of device Vert, a deer passant Or within a laurel wreath Or, a chief embattled Or Reblazon: Vert, a deer passant within a laurel wreath and a chief embattled Or. The ^ÓOr^Ôs are redundant.

#24 ^Ö Isake de Elford ^Ö device resubmission Per pale argent and Or, a lion rampant sable within a bordure pean Recommend a re-draw of this device. The ermine spots are too small and are difficult to identify as such from a distance. The lion is also difficult to identify.

#28 ^Ö Kieran MacRae - badge resubmission (Fieldless) On an open book purpure, a musical note argent. Is this a period depiction of a musical note? From what we can find, the period form of a musical note has the vertical line extending from the top corner of the lozenge rather than the right corner. See http://ocelot.cc.purdue.edu/~raybro/index1.html for graphics of 16th century musical notation.

#29 ^Ö Megge Gormshuilleach - device resubmission Azure, a bend engrailed between two Kendal flowers argent barbed vert and a chief argent. Reblazon: Azure, a bend sinister engrailed between two Kendal flowers argent barbed vert and a chief argent

#30 ^Ö Murdoch Bayne - badge resubmission Per pale ermine and vert, in sinister a lion's head cabossed Or. Could this be considered marshalling, as defined in RfS XI.3?

#33 ^Ö Raffaello di Valore - new name and device "Italian Names from Florence, 1427" can be found at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~torchia/names/firenznames.htm This device conflicts with Sebastian Hawkwood (Argent, a hawk^Òs head erased and affronty gules between two flaunches purpure). There is only one CD for change of primary.

#39 ^Ö Sara de Lindley - new device Purpure, a daisy slipped, in base two rapiers crossed in saltire argent. Re-draw: The rapiers are not depicted in their period form. As drawn, they look like modern (post-1900) sabre guards with attached quillons. At best, they resemble Spanish cup hilts, which first appeared in about 1625. The rapiers should be redrawn as proper 16th-century rapiers with swept hilts. (From the fencer in the Ravenstongue Group)

#40 ^Ö Seth MacMichael ^Ö new name and device Per pale purpure and gules, two gorillas statant respectant argent Were gorillas known in period? And if so, would they have been depicted this way?

#45 ^Ö William le Forestier - device resubmission His name was returned by Laurel for conflict in October 2001. There is no longer a submitted name attached to this device.
