Æthelmearc External Letter of Intent #AE56

Unto Francois Laurel, Mari Pelican, Zenobia Wreath, and the commenting members of the College of Arms, does Juliana Garnet, send greetings!

It is the wish of the College of Heralds of Æthelmearc that the following submissions be considered for registration. Unless otherwise noted, the submitters will accept both major and minor changes.

1. Adachi Masamori — New name

He requests a name authentic for Japan, but will accept no changes. The name is intended to be masculine. The structure of a clan name followed by a given name (nanori) is typical order.

A web article (http://www.san.beck.org/AB4-SEAsianKoreaJapan.html) dates Adachi Kagemori to 1247 as a Japanese name. Context suggests that Adachi is a clan or family name. In addition, it is found in Solveig (p. 313) dated to 1332.

Masamori is given as a period nanori in Solveig’s "Japanese Formal Masculine Given Names" (http://www.s-gabriel.org/names/solveig/nanori/nanorim.html), as well as in her book on Japanese names. It is not more clearly dated.

2. Alana Griffin — Device resubmission

Sable, a griffin segreant Or winged argent maintaining an acorn Or.

Her name was registered by Laurel in October 2001. This is a redraw of an identical device returned for conflict in October 2001 with these words:

Conflict with Gordon of Axemoor, Sable, a griffin segreant within an annulet Or. There is one CD for removing the annulet. There is no difference for adding the small maintained acorn. Under normal circumstances, the wings of a griffin are considered half the charge for purposes of tincture changes. However, this griffin is drawn with abnormally small wings. We register the emblazon, not the blazon, so we cannot give a CD for changing the tincture of wing color only unless the griffin is drawn with normal proportions. In a winged quadruped monster such as a griffin, a normal depiction has the wings one-third to one-half of the visual weight of the charge. If the griffin were drawn this way, neither this conflict, nor the other conflicts listed here, would apply.

We trust these wings are big enough.

3. Alheydis von Körckhingen — New name and device

Or, a goblet azure within a bordure azure semy of decrescents argent.

She requests a name authentic for 13th-14th century German and will accept minor changes only.

Alheydis is documented from the May 1996 LoAR, which includes citations of Alheydis Tesmer to 1353 in "G. Schlimpert, Slawische Personennamen in mittelalterlichen Quellen zur deutschen Geschichte" (s.n. Tesmer). The spelling can also be found in documents transcribed at http://www.altertumsverein-paderborn.de/h_urk01.htmdated to 1269, 1311, 1321, 1329, 1346, and 1348. This site is a work of the "Verein für Geschichte und Altertumskunde Westfalens e. V. Abt. Paderborn", which appears to be a historical society in Westphalia. These spellings are taken from a series of transcribed documents. It’s very cool — check it out!

The spelling Körckhingen is documented in 500 Jahre Pfarrkiche Kerkingen, a locally written and published town history (publication data not available), which says (in part) "During the 13th through 15th centuries the first part of [Kerkingen] was rendered Korck-, Körckh-, Kärk-, Chörck-."

Photocopies of all that and more are enclosed.

The addition of the bordure clears that conflict and does not seem to introduce any new ones.

The submitter has relatives who live in an Italian village known today as San Danato. We believe this to be a variant of San Donato. We found the modern town of San Donato Milanese outside Milan (photocopies of map attached), and San Donato the man is clearly dated to period (he died in 1198 according to "Catholic Online Saints" http://saints.catholic.org/saints). Any help on the spelling would be appreciated.

25. Jacopo di Niccolo — Badge resubmission

(Fieldless) On a quatrefoil erminois a sealion maintaining a bow gules.

His name was registered in January 1997.

His previous submission, with the same blazon, was returned with these words:

This is not an acceptable depiction of a quatrefoil. A quatrefoil may have pointed or round foils, and it may have a central area large enough to hold a tertiary charge. However, each lobe of the foil should resemble a petal or leaf. If the lobes are circular, each lobe should be well over half a circle. Internal details can also help show that there are four separate petals in a quatrefoil. In this emblazon, each lobe of the quatrefoil is less than half a circle, with the result that these do not seem to be separate petals, but rounded protrusions from some bulky center charge.

As suggested by some commenters, we have compared the emblazon with the quatrefoil shown on plate XXIX of Woodward and Burnett's A Treatise on Heraldry, British and Foreign. The lobes of those quatrefoils are pointed and much more detached, so that they each comprise about 2/3 of a pointed oval. The quatrefoils in Woodward also have internal details that help with identifiability. Some commenters suggested that this quatrefoil was identical to the one in the registered badge of Angus MacBain, (Fieldless) On a quatrefoil pean a lion rampant argent. However, this is not the case. In Angus's quatrefoil, the quatrefoil's lobes are circular, but each lobe is notably more than half a circle. It was also suggested that a similar quatrefoil could be found in the registered badge of Padraic the Fierce, (Fieldless) On a quatrefoil argent a demi-griffin issuant from base sable. However, Padraic's quatrefoil also has well-separated lobes where each lobe is significantly more than half a circle.

This one really does look like the one registered to Angus.
