Find herein Garnet’s decisions on the items in Æthelmearc’s Internal Letter of Intent Æ61. Many, many thanks to our commenters this month: Ailis, Cadell, Cnut, Daimhin, Edmund, Elsbeth, Hrefna, Jehan, Myfanwy, Roana, and Thomas! All redrawn devices can be viewed as part of XLoI Æ61, available on the Æthelmearc heralds’ webpage.
Per chevron inverted azure and sable, in chief a cinquefoil Or, in base two arrows inverted in chevron inverted argent.
This device has a technical conflict with Arwenna of Kelsley, "Argent, chaussé-ployé azure, two arrows inverted in pile and in chief a mullet of eight points counterchanged" with one CD for changes to the field, but no CD for changes to the upper primary charge. From the draft of Elsbeth’s precedents a CD can be granted for changing one charge in a group of three only when the changes are to the bottom charge in a two-and-one arrangement.
[Per pall sable, vert and argent, in pale two swords crossed in saltire argent and a cat’s paw print counterchanged.] Conflict with ... Per fess embattled vert and argent, in pale two swords in saltire and a compass star counterchanged. There is one CD for the changes to the field, but none for change in type and tincture for only one of three of the primary charges (as they are not arranged two and one). [Roger de Kymberle, 09/99, R-Atlantia]
We are pending this item in hopes of getting a letter of permission to conflict.
Per chevron sable and azure, a dragon involved in annulo, in dexter chief an increscent argent.
The size of the increscent has been reduced, upon recommendation of several commenters.
Argent, a willow tree vert and a ford proper.
Per chevron azure and sable, in base a catamount passant guardant Or.
Submitted as Anneliese, the spelling has been changed to a documentable form, making the name registerable. By Laurel precedent:
"Colm Dubh found a citation of Annalies in 1634 (Wilfred Seibicke, Historisches Deutsches Vornamenbuch), which is in our "gray area" of documentation. Therefore we will allow the compound given name. We will, however, only allow it in the listed spelling (barring documentation that another spelling is a valid period variant)."
The device is being returned for conflict with Conrad von Hammerbourg, Per chevron rayonny sable and gules, in base a catamount herissonee proper. There is one CD for changes to the field, but no difference between a catamount passant guardant Or and a catamount herissonee proper, since a catamount proper is Or marked sable (which does not get a CD from Or) and passant and herissonee do not get a CD by Elsbeth’s precedent:
"There is not a CD between passant and herissony." [George Anne, 01/00, R-Æthelmearc].
Ermine, a horse rampant contourny reguardant sable mane and tail enflamed proper.
This is being returned because Laurel precedent dating from 1995 specifically prohibits charges from being composed partially or entirely of flames, as this is not a period practice.
[returning a fox rampant...its tail flames...] Charges or, as here, parts of a charge "of flames" do not appear to be period style and tend to create the kind of visual confusion which heraldry normally attempts to avoid. (Hannah Cameron, 5/95 p. 11) – Da’ud 2.2, under Flames & Enflamed
Per chevron sable and argent, two wolves' heads erased and a rose counterchanged.
Addressing the concern of some commenters, the rose has been redrawn to improve identifiability.
Or, a sun sable eclipsed Or, on a bordure embattled purpure, the words "In Diece von Albrecht von Halstern" Or.
The device has been redrawn to give the letters internal volume.
Per chevron Or and gules, a sun in its splendor counterchanged.
Per bend vert and purpure, on a bend cotised between two fleurs-de-lys argent three thistle heads palewise proper.
Vert, on a pale sable fimbriated argent a tree eradicated Or, a chief argent.
Per pale sable and Or, two griffins segreant addorsed counterchanged.
[Fieldless] A wing fesswise conjoined to a hand gules maintaining a baton fesswise argent.
This is being returned for conflict with Riccardo di Pisa, Argent, an eagle's wing fesswise terminating in a hand gules maintaining a scimitar fesswise reversed sable, with only one CD for fieldlessness.
Azure, on a pale between two roses argent another azure all barbed and seeded proper.
Per fess wavy sable and Or, in pale a plate and a hurt.
Or, four oak leaves conjoined in saltire at the stems vert.
Vert, a panther sejant argent spotted sable.
Sadly, this lovely device is being returned for numerous conflicts: Caintigern of Ainsley, Vert, semy of bells Or, a panther sejant guardant argent spotted of various tinctures incensed proper. There is a CD for removing the bells, but nothing for any of the other minor artistic details. Jordre Pargon of Windhover's Reach, Azure, a snow leopard sejant argent spotted sable. There is one CD for changes to the field. Louis-Philippe Mitourard, Per bend sinister gules and azure, a striped silver tabby cat sejant guardant proper. There is one CD for changes to the field. Styria (important non-SCA arms), Vert, a panther rampant argent incensed proper. There is one CD for the change in posture. [Fieldless] A fleur-de-lys within and conjoined to an annulet of chain Or.
Azure, a bend invected Or, in sinister chief a cross bottony argent.
The bend has been redrawn with fewer and more distinct invects in response to several commenters’ concern.
Argent, a palm tree bendwise sinister sable within a bordure wavy azure.
This item was pended from letter Æ60, but the confusion has since been cleared up.
Or, a rooster sable standing atop a trimount checky argent and vert maintaining in its claw a fleur-de-lys azure.
Azure, on a bend cotised Or four wagon wheels proper.
This is being returned for conflict with Stewart the Stalwart, Azure, upon a bend cotised Or three keys palewise, wards in chief, azure, with only a single CD for the changes to the tertiary charges.
Argent, a chevron and in base a crescent sable.
Per chevron azure and argent, three Phrygian caps one and two argent and a joscelyn wreathed azure and Or with three bells gules.
Argent, a mortar and pestle azure, two vines of sage in pile vert.
This badge is being returned for clarification and redraw. The unanimous opinion of the college is that sage does not grow on a vine, and that furthermore all of the charges are drawn sufficiently small and poorly to hamper identifiability.
Argent, a boar statant within a bordure gules.
Per pale gules and sable, a Celtic cross argent, on a chief argent three Maltese crosses vert.
Per pale sable and argent, on a sun a Celtic cross and a bordure counterchanged.
Per saltire argent and gules, a hammer reversed within a bordure embattled sable.
Azure, a pegasus contourny passant reguardant argent, on a chief dovetailed argent three fleurs-de-lis azure.
Her name is in process. Her previous submission (Azure, a pegasus passant reguardant and on a chief dovetailed argent three fleurs-de-lis azure.) was returned for conflict.
Per fess azure and per pale gules and sable, a demi-sun throughout issuant from the line of division Or and a griffin segreant argent.
Per saltire argent and purpure, a heart sable within a bordure checky argent and sable.
While the submitter claims to have previously submitted his name via Drachenwald, there is no evidence that any such submission actually exists. Without a registered, or at least provably in-process name, we cannot forward his device.
Per fess argent and gules, a saltire gules, and a swan’s head and neck couped argent.
Gules, an hourglass argent between three suns Or.
Chevronelly inverted argent and azure, an eagle displayed head to sinister sable within a bordure compony gules and argent.
Sable mullety argent, a lion rampant contourny Or maintaining a goblet argent.
Sable, a pale argent, on a chief Or a lightning bolt fesswise sable.
[Fieldless] A horse's head couped erminois.
This is a resubmission of Katherine Kiersey, which was returned by Laurel in 06/02. The change is a very minor one suggested in the return by Pelican, since no changes were allowed at the time. We feel that this can go directly to an external letter because it is a minor change to a recent return.
Argent, a fox rampant and on a chief azure two rapiers crossed in saltire argent.
Gules, a saltire bretessed Or and in chief a laurel wreath argent.
Or, an open book gules, a chief embattled azure.
Sable, a lion’s head couped contourny and on a bordure argent three decrescents sable.
