Æthelmearc Internal Letter of Intent Æ 63

It is the intent of the Æthelmearc College of Heralds that the following items be considered for registration. Unless otherwise noted, submitters will accept any changes. Comments on this letter are due by November 30.


1. Anna Dillon – New name and device

Per chevron gules and sable, on a chevron between three crescents Or three mullets sable.

This name is intended to be feminine.

Anna is a secondary header from in Withycombe (s.n. Ann) who cites the marriage of Anna, the great-granddaughter of Emperor Romanus, to Henri I of France around 1031-1060.

Dillon is a header from in Reaney & Wilson, who cite Geoffrey Dilon in 1203.

2. Assad de Barcelona – New name and device

Sable, three mullets in bend sinister Or.

This name is intended to be masculine. The submitter will not accept major changes.

Asad is found in Juliana’s article, "Andulisian Names: Arabs in Spain." The submitter wants the spelling Assad, with a double s, but will accept the documented spelling if necessary.

Barcelona is reported as "a city on the northern coast of the Mediterranean Sea in Spain. [It was] founded by the Carthaginians, fell to the Moors in 713, and was taken by Charlemagne’s troops in 801," according to the American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language.

This name is intended to be masculine.

Finn is a header form in Reaney & Wilson (s.n. Finn) with Hugo filius Fin dated to 1178-9. As a patronymic surname, this indicates the use of Fin(n) as a given name known in England in period.

Folhare is a surname listed in Jonsjo’s Studies on Middle English Nicknames with Rog. Ffolhare dated to 1338.

7. Katerina y Ty Isaf – Name change from Katerina Ty Isaf

This name was mis-registered due to a clerical error in-Kingdom: the ‘y’ was accidentally dropped when her original submission went external. The submitter wants her y back!


8. Katrina of the Groves – New device

Lozengy argent and sable, in cross four orange trees fructed proper.

Her name was registered in 02/95.

9. Rhiannon y Bwa – New device

Azure, two chicken’s legs inverted issuant from base embowed to center Or feathered argent.

The submitter claims that her name has been submitted, yet we have been unable to find any trace of it. Is her origanal consulting herald lurking out there anywhere? If we cannot locate her name paperwork, we will be forced to pend her device.

This name is intended to be masculine. The submitter will not accept any changes and requests authenticity for 13th-14th century Scotland.

Robert is found in Symon Freser’s article, "13th & 14th Century Scottish Names."

MacMahon, according to the information about the MacMahon family on the "Eolas na hEireann, Information about Ireland" website (http://homepage.tinet.ie/~kthomas/names8.htm), "comes from the Irish Mac Mathghamha, from mathghamhain, meaning’bear.’ .[...] the MacMahons were part of the great tribal grouping, the Dal gCais, and claim descent from Mahon O’Brien, grandson of Brain Boru."

von Guggenberg is a header form in Brechenmacher, with "Cunr. do Gugenberch" dated to 1282.

Valentine Byndley is found in a 1587 court record, Valentine Wheler in 1587 and 1590, according to Elizabethan Essex by Dr. F. Emmison (indexed at http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~mwi/Ess16c1.txt).

Charles Graye is found in a 1583 will, Margery Graye in a 1568 will, from the same source.
