Æthelmearc Letter of Report Æ 63 -
November 1, 2002

Find herein the decisions we have made concerning the items in the Internal Letter of Intent Æ 63. The accepted items will be forwarded to Laurel, who should rule on them in April 2002. Many thanks to all our commenters this month: Ailis, Aryanwhy, Cadell, Daimhin, Cnut, Elsbeth, Myfanwy, Otfrid, Roana, and Thomas. You guys rock!

1. Anna Dillon – Name and device accepted

Per chevron gules and sable, on a chevron between three decrescents Or three mullets sable.

2. Assad de Barcelona – Name and device returned

Sable, three mullets in bend sinister Or.

This name is being returned for liguistic incompatibility between the Arabic given name Assad and the Spanish locative surname de Barcelona. An Arabic given name would take an Arabic surname – something along the lines, perhaps, of al-Barsaloni. Changing the language of the surname would be a major change, but the submitter allows only minor changes. Thus, we must return the name.

The device is clear of conflict, but sadly we must return it because of the name return.

As a note to those of our commenters who were concerned, there is long-standing precedent (Elsbeth refers to Bruce, who refers to Alison, who refers to her own previous ruling, and so on and so forth …..) of a CD between a mullet and a compass star.

3. Catarina de Zaneto Rizo – Device accepted

Gules, a bend ermine between two dragonflies argent.

4. Colin MacWilliams – Badge accepted

(Fieldless) A thistle per pale vert and argent.

5. Finn Folhare – Name and device accepted

Argent, a double-headed eagle displayed and on a chief gules three roundels ermine.

6. Finn Marland O’Shannon – Device change accepted

Pean, a wolf rampant contourny between three fleurs-de-lys Or.

7. Katerina y Ty Isaf – Name change from Kateryna Ty Isaf returned

At the time of the registration of Kateryna Ty Isaf, the ‘y’ appeared to have been dropped, without comment, by Laurel, and the submitter believed it to have been an administrative error. Further research into the matter reveals that, while Laurel may have erred in not explaining the excision of the ‘y’ ... the simple fact is that ‘y’ has no rightful place in the name. Ty Isaf is a locative byname. ‘y’ is a pronoun meaning ‘the.’ Kateryna y Ty Isaf is equivalent to a name like ‘Richard the London.’ Thus, we are returning her name change.

8. Katrina of the Groves – Device accepted

Lozengy argent and sable, in cross four orange trees fructed proper.

9. Rhiannon y Bwa – Device pended

Azure, two chicken’s legs inverted conjoined issuant from base embowed to center Or feathered argent.

Rhiannon’s name submission is on ILoI 64. We are pending her device for one letter-cycle; when her name is forwarded to Laurel, the device will accompany it.

10. Robert MacMahon – Name and device accepted

Or, in pale a wyvern passant sable and another gules.

We are unable to make this name authentic (as per the submitter’s request) for 13th-14th century Scotland, as MacMahon is a solely Irish surname. Nevertheless, his name is certainly registerable, and we are forwarding it to Laurel.

11. Rosalinda of Castille – Device accepted

Per pale purpure and sable, a triple-towered castle between three arrows argent.

12. Sebastian von Guggenberg – Name and device accepted

Per pale argent and vert, three eagles counterchanged.

13. Valentine Graye – Name and device accepted

Argent, a chalice purpure and a dexter tierce embattled vert.
