Letter of Intent #64
Comet Commenting Group
15 January 2003
Unto Ailis Garnet and Roana Cornelian does
Cadell Comet send greetings! Within, please find commentary
on AE64, compiled on 15 January, AS XXXVII (2003 A.D.). Assisting me in
compiling this commentary were yourselves, Lord Thomas Ouswood, Lord
Daimhin Sinna, and Nicola of Cunningham.
- 1. Adrian MacLachlan – Name, Device
- Withycombe cites that "the introduction of the name into England
may have been due to its adoption by Nicholas Brakespear (died 1159),
the only English Pope, who took the name Adrian IV" (s.n. Adrian).
- 3. Benedict Feargus atte Mede – Name
- Withycombe (s.n. "Benedict, Bennet") dates "Benedict" to 1273.
- The following documentation was omitted from the LoI: "atte Mede
is a locative meaning "dweller by or in the mead." Reaney & Wilson
on p. 304 under the heading "Mead" identifies John Atemede in 1248. The
same source gives many instances of "atte" being separated, such as
John atte Mulle, 1276 (under Mill) and Robert atte Revere, 1327 (under
Revere)."
- 4. Ethan Stewart – Name, Device
- The supplied documentation for "Ethan" was found in Withycombe
(s.n. Ethan).
- Reblazon: "Per saltire purpure and vert, in pale two moose's
heads couped contourny argent."
- 5. Giana di Aurelio – Name, Device
- We found (at
"http://www.grainger.de/music/composers/virgil.html") Aurelio
Virgiliano as living from 1540-1600.
- 6. Gillian Llywellyn of Ravenspur – Badge
- Her name was registered as "Gillian Llywelyn" in Sept 96.
- As drawn, we are unsure as to whether or not this is
registerable. Because the antlers are disjoint, is this registerable as
a fieldless badge?
- 7. Gwineth McClelan – Name, Device
- Morgan & Morgan (s.n. Gwynedd) lists Gwineth from 1577.
- 8. Isolda filia Georgii – Name
- The header form for the given name in Withycombe is Isolda. The
header form for the surname in Reaney & Wilson is George.
- 9. Leo Bertrand Benton – Name, Device
- All three elements are header forms in their respective sources,
although the dated form of Benton from 1275 is de Beneton. "Benton" is
dated to 1450.
- 10. Michael the Tinker – Name
- "Michael" is a header form in Withycombe, and this spelling is
dated to 1196.
- 11. Phebee Sybbel Headley – Name
- Phebee is dated in the cited article to 1583.
- Sybbel is found in the "Index to Feminine Given Names in the
Registers of the Church of St. Mary's, Dymoch, 1538-1600" by Mari
(http://www.s-gabriel.org/names/mari/dymoch/dym_women_index.html),
listed under the header "Sible," and is dated to 1561.
- In the article cited, Headley is dated to 1579.
- 13. Seamus mac Maolain – Name
- Woulfe lists "mac Maoláin" as a header form (and gives
"son of Maolán" as the meaning), and states "In the 12th
century, Mac Maoláin was lord of Gaileang Breagh."
- 14. Una de St. Luc – Device
- Her name was submitted on AE57, and should have been decided on
in October 2002. The LoAR for the October meeting has not yet been
released.
- 15. Viola Thornhaven – Name, Device
- The header form for the given name in Withycombe is Viola.
Withycombe also states that the name occurred in Gower's Confessio
Amantis, which is dated to the late 14th century. However, we could
find no non-literary period references to the name. Ordinarily, we
would then leave this to Garnet and Cornelian's discretion; however,
Garnet is mere inches away for a coronary attempting to find the name.
