February 19, AS XXXVII (2003)
Unto Ailis Garnet and Roana Cornelian does Cadell Comet send greetings! Enclosed, please find commentary on AE65. Unless otherwise noted, all names are accurately documented (and the documentation is reflected accurately in the LoI) and all devices are, to the best of our ability, free of conflict.
I was aided in the preparation of this letter by yourselves, Lord Thomas Ouswood, and Alianore of the Debatable Lands.
1. Æthelmearc, Kingdom of – Badge
A translation of the Latin should be provided, acquired, stolen, or otherwise procured. Using our very limited knowledge of Latin, we believe it to mean "Words are fleeting, but script endures." Can someone with more Latin knowledge confirm this?
As neither Cornelian nor Comet, who are both Æthelmearc scribes, remember being consulted on this, we would like to see support from the Æthelmearc Scribal community for this badge.
There was some discussion that the scroll should be wider… er, taller… er, thicker… er, "stretched vertically."
2. Arabella MacGrath – Device
Her name was registered in October 2001.
The position is forced; the phrase "in bend sinister" can be dropped from the blazon.
5. Gunther Schwartzrosen – Device
The name "Günther Schwarzrose" was registered in May 2002.
6. Gwilym ap Dafydd – Name, Device
Gwilym and Dafydd are also contained in the text of "Late 16th Century Welsh Names" by Talan.
7. Johann Schülein – Name, Device
If our reading of Bahlow is correct, Schülein is listed as an alternate spelling of Schielin, which is listed under the header form of Schiele. Therefore, this surname seems registerable.
We feel it necessary to impress upon Master Edmund the virtue of Crayola markers, as opposed to Crayola crayons.
9. Rhydderich Hael – Order Name "Order of the Golden Bee" and Badge
Contrary to several other commenters, while this is in conflict with Elizabeth Braidwood ([Fieldless] A bee Or), the LoI states that Mistress Elizabeth has provided a Letter of Permission to Conflict.
10. Rioghnach ni Rose – Name, Device
We feel that, while the roses are not large enough to be co-primary charges with the cats, they are large enough to be ambiguous, and should therefore be redrawn smaller before submitted to Wreath.
11. Robert of Worcester – Name, Device
Worcester is also a header form in Mills, with Wirecestre dated to 1086.
Reblazon: "Purpure, a bend argent between two crosses couped Or within a bordure argent."
The bend should be drawn much bigger.
12. Thomas von Hessen – Name, Device
As well as we could read Bahlow, the entry under "Hess" details the name as a given name, not a surname.
Stefhan von Hessen was submitted by the Kingdom of Atenveldt on its March 2002 LoI, and Pelican registered the name in July as Steffan von Hessen. Examination of the LoI granted no additional information.
Wulrich von Hesse was submitted internally in An Tir in December 2001, and changed to Wulrich von Hessen for the External LoI as "the correct German spelling of the region's name."
Given these two examples, we feel that von Hessen is probably the correct spelling for registration. Anyone who can actually make their way out of a German paper bag, however, should be regarded with more authority on this matter.
13. Wolfgang Güntherson – Name, Device
The header forms are Wolf(f)gang and Günther. Under Günther, Bahlow states "Günther has been a leading name in the noble family of Schwarzburg in Thur. since the Middle Ages."
In Service,
THL Cadell Blaidd du
Comet Pursuivant, Barony-Marche of the Debatable Lands
