Greetings unto the Æthelmearc College of Heralds from THL Pendar the Bard, Musimon Herald Extraordinary.
Herein find commentary on the AEthelmearc internal letter dated May 1, 2003.
3. Asad de Barcelona. Sable, three mullets in bend sinister Or.
I found two possible conflicts. I will review them individually as this is an interesting case.
Awilda Haeulfdan (4/85 via the Middle):
Per pale gules and sable, three compass stars in bend sinister Or.
There is clearly 1 CD for changes to the field, as per RfS X.4.a.
But the other CD would have to come from whether five pointed mullets are considered significantly different from eight pointed mullets. By the following logic, they are:
A recent precedent from the tenure of Francois la Flamme states
"There is another CD for changing the type of mullet from a mullet of eight points to a mullet of five points. The rules for change of type of mullets follow the rules for change of number of charges. Mullets of n points will get a CD from mullets of m points if RfS X.4.f gives a CD for changing the number of charges from n to m." [Kouac Myklos, 02/02, A-Ansteorra]
RfS X.4.f. Number Changes - Significantly changing the number of charges in any group placed directly on the field or overall is one clear difference. One, two, and three are significantly different from any number, four is significantly different from six or more, and five is significantly different from eight or more. Six and higher numbers, including semy of charges, are not significantly different from each other.
So since five is significantly different from eight or more, a mullet of five points does get a CD from a compass star. That clears this one.
Kate Wood (2/75):
Sable, six mullets in bend, three and three, Or.
There is one CD for changing the number of mullets on the field as per RfS X.4.f.
The second would have to come from arrangement. Does the fact that Kate Wood's mullets are all in bend rather than in bend sinister make any difference? No, it doesn't. By the following logic.
According to RfS X.4.f, "Six and higher numbers, including semy of charges, are not significantly different from each other."
That being the case, we can treat Kate Wood's device as "Sable mullety Or", in spite of the fact that she specifies the arrangement. This is supported by
[Quarterly sable and gules, all semy of fraises Or] Conflict with ... Azure, six roses, two, two and two, Or. There is not a CD for number of primary charges, nor is there one for arrangement. [Colin Tyndall de ffrayser, 09/00, R-Artemisia]
[Returning Azure mullety Or, a vol argent.] Conflict with ... Azure, two wings conjoined argent enflamed between in annulo six mullets of six points Or. In this case there are no CD's for the number or type or arrangement of the mullets and nothing for the enflaming of the wings. [1/94, p.15]
Which according to the following precedent means that Asad cannot get his second CD for arrangement on the field:
"[Sable semy-de-lys argent] Conflict with Geoffrey de la Brugge, Sable, in pale two fleurs-de-lys argent. There is only one CD, for changing the number of charges." [Bohémond le Sinistre, 10/01, R-Outlands]
4. Augusto Giuseppe da San Donato. Gules, on a pile rayonny argent a standing balance sable.
Terwyn of Glen Laxsey (6/91 via Atenveldt):
Gules, on a pile invected argent, a unicorn's head erased sable.
There is one CD by RfS X.4.j.ii for changing the type-only of the tertiary because a pile is considered simple enough to fimbriate.
The second CD would have to come whether rayonny is considered significantly different from invected. I found no evidence in previous precedents that it is not. Send forward for consideration by Laurel, but note the possible conflict.
No conflicts found through 02/03
6. Cour d'Or, College of. Or, two bendlets and in chief a laurel wreath sable.
No conflicts found through 02/03
