16 July AS XXXVIII
Greetings unto the commenting Heralds of the Kingdom of AEthelmearc from THLord Cadell Blaidd du, Comet Pursuivant!
Enclosed, please find the Comet Commenting Group commentary on Internal Letter of Intent AE70. I was assisted in the composition of this commentary by Lady Ailis Linne.
Unless otherwise specified, all name documentation is correct and satisfactory, and all armory is clear of conflict and without comment.
1. Amaryllis Coleman - New badge
"(Fieldless) A needle fesswise Or threaded vert."
Does the needle need to be blazoned "point to dexter" (or, equivalently, "eye to sinister")? If we're not sure, put it in, and if Wreath wants to take it out, they can.
This is clear of West, Kingdom of, "Vert, a threaded needle bendwise sinister Or," with one CD for fieldlessness and another for changing the orientation of the needle.
Just for bookkeeping purposes, Cadell Blaidd du is the herald of record for this submission.
2. Aurenca Mouly - New badge
"(Fieldless) A crescent gules."
Technically, this should be in conflict with the Red Crescent. However, the SCA O&A only protects the crescent in its "decrescent" position. By the Geneva Convention, all orientations of "Argent, a crescent gules" should be protected. However, this should be forwarded to Laurel (with this commentary) so that a precedent can be set.
3. Aurenca Mouly - New badge
"(Fieldless) On a crescent gules a cross Moline Or."
Technically, this should not be in conflict with the Red Crescent, even assuming that all orientations of gules crescents are protected. (One CD for fieldlessness, one CD for adding the cross)
There was discussion as to the potential offensiveness of the combination of a crescent (a period and modern symbol of Islam) and a cross (a period and modern symbol of Christianity). While we personally do not find the combined imagery offensive, we believe that the possibility should be brought to Laurel's attention.
4. Bohdan Medvid – Device resubmission
"Azure, a bear salient and in chief a Ukrainian trident head Or."
This device has been redrawn to satisfy Laurel's return in May 2002. This Ukranian trident head is drawn exactly the same as the one in the Pic Dic.
5. Gregory Hillson – New name, New device
"Or, a tower azure between flaunches vert."
That spelling of Gregory is also dated to 1387.
7. Kateryna Ty Isaf – New badge
"(Fieldless) A cat's head cabossed per pale sable and argent."
Just for bookkeeping purposes, Cadell Blaidd du is the herald of record for this submission.
8. Isabel of Sherwood – New name, New device
"Or, a horse passant sable between four fleurs-de-lys three and one
azure."
This may be in conflict with Melacha of the Blue Mountain, "Or, a chestnut foal with four white stockings and a blaze statant regarding a Blue Mountain butterfly [Papilli ulysses] perched on his rump, all proper" (West, Aug79). There is one CD for the addition of the secondary charges; we are unsure if any of the various other changes (the head position, the butterfly, the various tincture changes) are worth a second CD, and we ask for an examination of Melacha's armory.
11. Pavla de la Satu Mare – New device
"Per pall argent, purpure, and sable, in chief a demi-pegasus erect
sable."
Just for bookkeeping purposes, Cadell Blaidd du is the herald of record for this submission.
12. Ryska Kononova – New name, New device
"Per bend sinister sable and vert, a bend wavy between two winged lions
sergeant Or."
The surname date listed is for "Konanova," not "Kononova." However, since "Kono" is dated to middle of the 15th c., and "Konanov" is dated to 1459-1469, we still feel "Kononova" is a reasonable spelling variation.
In Service,
Cadell Comet
