Letter of Intent #71
Heronter Heralds Commenting Group
Unto the AEthelmearc College of Heralds,
Greetings from the Heronter Heralds (an Heraldic Flying Circus and Moving
Company affiliate). Herein, our commentary on ILoI #AE71, August 2003
1. Alicia Hennenberg New name
Alicia -- (Withycombe, 3rd ed., pg. 15, sn "Alice")
This spelling, Curia Regis Rolls 1189 - 1215, Feudal Aids 1303
2. Aurenca Mouly Badge resubmission
"(Fieldless) A horseshoe Or."
The SCA Glossary of Terms (www.sca.org/heraldry/loar/2003/01/03-01gld.html) in
Table 4: Conventional SCA Default Postures, states:
"Horseshoe -- Opening to base"
Clear of:
Richenda de Braundeston|9904S|b|
"(Fieldless) A horseshoe inverted Or, winged argent."
(1 CD for fieldless, 1 CVD for inversion, 1 CVD for wings)
Gilyan Alienora of Clonmacnoise|0109X|b|
"Per pale purpure and vert, a pawprint within a horseshoe Or."
(1 CD for fieldless, 1 CVD for pawprint)
4. Henry Clarence New name, New device
"Argent, three unicorns passant azure."
Henry -- (Withycombe, 3rd ed., pg. 149, sn "Henry")
This spelling is dated to the 13th century.
Clarence -- (Reaney and Wilson, pg. 98, sn "Richard")
Richard Clarence dated to 1453.
No conflicts, but he should probably stay away from:
Rosewitha Wolfsdottir|8310W|d|
"Argent, three unicorn's heads couped to sinister azure."
:)
5. James Irvin New name, New device
"Azure, a sheave of three swords points to base Or, bound with a riband argent
all within a bordure Or."
James -- (Withycombe, 3rd ed., pg. 170, s.n. "James")
This spelling is dated to 1240
Irvin -- (Reaney & Wilson, pg. 249, s.n. "Irvin") various spellings to 1226
Irvin -- (Black, pg. 378, s.n. "Irvine") This spelling, 1641
Clear of:
Outlands, Kingdom of the|8904O|b|
"Vert, a sheaf of three swords inverted proper surmounted by a rose,
all within a bordure embattled Or."
(1 CVD for field, 1 CVD for sword tincture, 1 CVD for embattlements)
6. Riversedge, Shire of New name
We're of the opinion that if it would have been used in period, we'd have
documentation of it. However, it is SCA compatible.
7. Wynterset, Stronghold of New device
"Argent, a winged stag's head erased and affronty azure surrounded by a laurel
wreath vert and on a chief sable three mullets of eight argent."
No conflicts found, but the laurel wreath is virtually un-noticable.
8. Wynterset, Stronghold of New badge
"Sable, upon a mullet of eight argent a winged stag's head erased and affronty
azure."
"Upon" is an ambiguous term in SCA heraldry. It can mean either "the charge
that follows is a tertiary" or "the charge that follows is above this one
and they're conjoined in pale". For example, "Upon a tower an eagle displayed"
Is the eagle a tertiary or standing on the embattlements as a co-charge?
Re-blazon as "... a mullet of eight argent _charged with_ a winged ..."
Clear of:
Alexandra of Elentil|7506|D|
"Sable, a mullet of eight points argent, a bordure gules, fimbriated argent."
(1 CVD for tertiary, 1 CVD for bordure) **squeek!**
Possible Conflict:
Ryugen Morite|8311N|b|(For Household Kuroboshi)
"Sable, a mullet of eight points surmounted to dexter base by a Japanese stream
argent."
(1 CVD for stag's head vs. stream tertiary)
9. Wynterset, Stronghold of New badge
"Argent, a stag's head erased and affronty azure and in base two swords in
saltire sable."
No conflicts found, however the swords are so tiny as to be un-noticable.
To get a better idea of what the ratio of should be, look at the old Buffalo
Sabres logo.
