Greetings once again as we all prepare for Pennsic! We know full well that you may be at Pennsic, or even safely home, by the time you read these words. But life goes on in the ever-productive Garnet office, and we present for your enjoyment a new Internal Letter of Intent. Pennsic does, however, have an impact on our scheduling: Commentary on this letter will be due on September 15 (please continue to post to the list at aethel-heralds@lists.andrew.cmu.edu). The next Internal Letter of Intent (Æ72), which will contain all of the Pennsic submissions, will be coming out about that time. Many thanks to all of you!

Riversedge is a constructed place name. It is intended to mean "steep ridge, hill, or edge by a river."
River is a header form in Ekwall. Although Ekwall does not give any examples in which river- is a protheme, there are other period placenames in which a word referring to a body of water is a protheme: ‘burn’ (meaning stream) is found in Burnby, Burnham, and Bournemouth; ‘broc’ (Old English, meaning brook) is found in Brookhampton, Brookland, Brookthorpe, and Brookwood. ‘River-‘ is offered as a reasonable protheme following this pattern. -edge comes from the Old English ‘ecg,’ meaning edge, hill, or steep ridge. As a deuterotheme, it appears in Ekwall under Brownedge (‘brown hill,’ Brownegge in 1551), Harnage (‘stony or rocky edge,’ Harnegge in 1327), Hathersage (possibly ‘haefer’ he-goat and ‘ecg,’ Hathersegge in 1264) and Liversedge (‘Leofhere’s ridge,’ Liversegge in 1198).
