Unto Ailis Garnet and Roana Cornelian, and the heralds of AEthelmearc, does Cadell Comet send greetings! Included, please find the Comet Commentary Group's commentary on ILoI AE72. Assisting me in this letter were Sexi Lovechild, Pagan Daysterre, Kieran MacRae, Odriana vander Brugghe, and Aurenca Mouly.
1. Aburgha Chaghadai - Name, Device
Name: If this gentle wants to be "of the white clan," which to us implies that "Chaghadai" is the family name, then "proper" Mongolian construction would list the name as "Chaghadai Aburgha."
Device: As drawn, the sun and the dragon are co-primaries, and should be blazoned as "Gules, in pale a sun argent charged with a decrescent gules and an Oriental dragon passant argent." We found this blazon to be free of conflict. Comet, who was the consulting herald, remembers that the submitter wanted the dragon as a secondary, and has communicated this to Cornelian for the purposes of redrawing.
2. Adam Enstone on Tyne - Name, Device
Name: While the name given as the example, "Newcastle of Tyne," would theoretically justify this surname, the geography of the British Isles seems to disagree. Newcastle is, indeed, a town located on the Tyne river. Enstone is, sadly, not. Therefore, we question the legitimacy of this byname.
Device: We think that this armory would be much improved if the submitter used a mandrake as the primary charge (which is a documented period charge), as opposed to this monster. We note that the mandrake would give the same overall "feel" as this.
3. Aíbell Shúlglas - Device
Her name was registered in 09/01.
4. Ailis Linne - Alternate Name "Pagan Daysterre"
Her primary name was registered with 01/00.
7. Annanias Fenne - Badge
A "mount" is a peripheral ordinary, and therefore cannot appear on a fieldless badge. This needs to be redrawn and reblazoned as a "mount couped." Sexi has assured us that Roana has already taken care of this.
8. Aurenca Mouly - Alternate Name
The accent over the "a" in Scollás does not appear in R&W, and should be taken out.
10. Beatrice de Winter - Name
We suggest that the submitter be contacted, and asked whether she would prefer a Dutch name, or the name Beatrice. If she wants a Dutch name, we agree with Aurenca and Odriana's separate suggestions of either "Beatrijs" or "Beatrix."
11. Bevis of Sunderoak - Name
We are firmly of the opinion that the given name is not obtrusively modern, especially in combination with such an innocuous surname. Odriana is vehement, however, that the submitter should not attempt to submit any heraldry that includes a donkey (or any part thereof) enflamed.
12. Brian of Leichester - Badge
His name was registered 03/88.
13. Bridget Walker - Name, Device
Withycombe says about Bridget: "The earliest occurrence which has been noted in England as a Christian name is the youngest d. of Edward IV, b. 1480, d. 1513." This statement does not reference a specific spelling of the name, but as this is the header spelling, we feel it's good enough.
14. Carlo Garlucci - Badge
According to the O&A database, his name was registered as "Carlo Gallucci" in 08/02.
We are concerned that this might conflict with Brian of Leichester "[Fieldless] A dodo close vert armed Or." (01/93 East). There is certainly a CD for fieldlessness, but we are unsure whether there is a CD between a rooster and a dodo.
16. Dafydd MacNab - Name, Device
Name: A Welsh/Scots combination name is registerable with one weirdness, according to the 08/01 precedent for Anton Cwith.
18. Donnan the Solitary - Badge
The name was registered in 02/86.
21. Franz Belgrand die Mus - Device
The name was registered in 10/02.
23. Gideon Lydiard - Device Resub
The name was registered in 04/02.
25. Jean-Philippe Firmin d'Amiens
Spectacular armory!
27. Jochen Blitzger - Name, Device
We found "Jochen of Nithgaard," registered as a holding name in 02/00, with "Azure, a helm argent between three lightning bolts in pall Or" registered as a device. We can only assume that this is, in fact, the same person, and that he either forgot that his device had already been registered under the holding name, or was never informed. This device is different enough from the original, however, that we feel it should be submitted to Laurel as a Change of Holding Name and Change of Device. Because the original name was returned over two years ago, we do not feel that a refund is in order.
Perhaps the submitter should be consulted as to the status of his original submission, and whether or not he would like to withdraw this device as a result.
28. John Ignaiszack - Name
John is a header form in Withycombe, dated to 1550-99. However, Laurel has ruled the English-Polish combination unregisterable, as of 09/95.
We agree with Aurenca and Odriana that we would like to see better evidence of "Ignaiszack" ha a registerable name.
29. Katherine Loch Duibh - Name, Device
We agree with Aurenca and Odriana that "an Locha Duibh" sounds like a fine version of the byname, and we put our trust in Pelican. After all, we've heard a rumor she knows a thing or two about Gaelic names. :)
30. Khadel Kober - Name
The citation listed in Socin (after *much, much* searching) is spelled "Khad_a_l," not "Khad_e_l," and is on page 47, header #3, of the 1966 edition. We could find no evidence of the submitted spelling, and we therefore suggest "Khadal" as a spelling correction.
31. Khadel Kober - Badge
We applaud this effort to translate the Tuchux emblem into SCA-compatible heraldic terminology, and we fully support its registration.
33. Lothar Hugelman - Device
His name was registered in 01/03.
34. Mailagnas Maqqas Dunaidonas - Name, Device
This is clear of Ehrling of AEthelmearc (08/99): Azure, a boar's head erased, in chief 3 annulets argent, with CDs for number and type of secondaries.
Nice armory!
36. Michelina da Trento - Device
Her name was registered in 09/01.
39. Odriana vander Brugghe - Badge
This is clear of Harvey the Blind (01/86): [Fieldless] A furison sable charged with three hawk's bells in fess Or, with one CD for fieldlessness and another for adding tertiaries.
40. Olafr Thorvardarson - Device
The name ({O'}l{a'}fr {THORN}orvar{d/}arson) is on AE68.
The device is clear of Wulf Gray Wind (09/02): Vert, a wolf passant and on a chief argent two birds displayed sable, with one CD for the line of division on the chief and another for changes to the tertiary charges.
43. Rhydderch ap Erwin - Name, Device
Rhydderch is also given as a modern variation of "Riderch," dated to the 9th century in Appendix 3 of "The First Thousand Years of British Names" (http://www.s-gabriel.org/names/tangwystyl/british1000/appendix3.html#app3). It is also listed in "A Simple Guide to Constructing 16th Century Welsh Names (in English Contexts)," by Tangwystyl verch Morgant Glasvryn (http://www.s-gabriel.org/names/tangwystyl/welsh16.html).
Erwin is found as a surname in R&W (as a header form). "Augustinus filis Erwin'" is dated to 1255, justifying its use as a given name. As of the 8/99 Laurel Cover Letter, Welsh and English is registerable with no weirdness.
The device is clear of Janet Gordon (06/00): Per pale azure and vert, a Tau cross argent. Because Rhydderch's device is not X.2 simple, there is one CD for changing the type of primary charge, and another for adding the secondary charges.
45. Seth MacMichael - Badge
This device is clear of Ysabeau de Vézelay (10/88): Purpure, an ape statant Or, with one CD for fieldlessness and another for the tincture of the beast.
47. Sophie Davenport - Device
This is just barely clear of Kelson de la Croix (06/73): Sable, a bend sinister gules fimbriated argent, between a Latin cross and an olive branch bendwise sinister argent. There is one CD for changing the type of the secondary charges. Because scorpions are allowed to be bendwise sinister, there is one CD for changing the orientation of half of the secondary charge group (from bendwise sinister to palewise).
48. Taileshíthe of the Greenwood - Name, Device
Our research could find no more compelling evidence than Aurenca and Odriana have already provided.
However, if this name is deemed unregisterable, and the submitter is interested in the sound of the name (which, since she has been using the name for some time, I would assume), Comet suggests "Tuathflaith Seadhach" (which, to the best of his knowledge, would be pronounced "Tu-ALL-uh SHAH"). This name is documented thusly:
Tuathflaith is a header form in OC&M, which states: "This rare but beautiful name was borne by a queen of Leinster who died in 754."
Seadhach is an undated header form given in Woulfe. (Hey, it's undated, but it's there.)
The pall is inverted.
49. Tat'iana Kionova - Name
Comet, being the one who consulted on this submission, is pretty sure he remembers that it was Mari who told him the disputed assertion about name compatibility in Wickenden. If this assertion is incorrect, he apologizes profusely.
Even if not, there is a form "Tan'ia" listed under the header form "Tat'iana" that is dated to "14th-15th century." Given Kion's documentation to "4th century," this strikes us as 1000-year difference, and therefore registerable with a weirdness.
