Thanks to all of our commenters this month: Aryanhwy, Aurenca, Cnute, Edmund, Elizabeth, Elsbeth, Kieran, Lyev, Myfanwy, Odriana, Otfrid, Pagan, Sexi. My apologies if I left anyone off the list; all of you are to be commended for doing a bang-up job of producing voluminous useful commentary on this lengthy letter!
The items accepted in this letter have been forwarded to Laurel on XLoI Æ72 (November 29); they will be decided on in March 2004.
Gules, on a sun argent a decrescent gules and in base an Oriental dragon passant argent.
We are waiting on info from an obscure Mongolian source in the possession of Juliana de Luna. The name and device will be pended for one month, in hopes that we can get the necessary documentation.
Argent, a monster consisting of the upper half of a moor and the lower half of a tree stump eradicated proper maintaining in its dexter hand a hammer sable, a ford proper.
Enstone-on-Tyne is not a reasonable constructed English placename: Based on 'Newcastle-upon-Tyne,' the problem is that while Newcastle is genuinely located on the Tyne river, Enstone is about 250 miles away from the Tyne river. We have attempted to contact the submitter to get his input on acceptable changes to his name, but have not yet received a reply. The name and device will be pended for one month in hopes of hearing from the submitter.
Azure, two barrulets wavy between three herons argent.
Purpure, a swan naiant and on a chief argent three trees vert.
Originally submitted as Aine ingean Ruaidri, the name Ruaidri became 'associated with' the English name Richard in the 19th century. Upon consultation with the submitter (who indicated on her forms that she cares most about the meaning 'daughter of Richard'), the name has been changed to one that really does, in period, mean 'daughter of Richard.' (We have also corrected the spelling of 'ingean.') This is a major change from what was submitted, but it is what the gentle lady wants.
Or, a plow vert and on a chief embattled sable 3 garbs Or.
(Fieldless) In pale a moth displayed argent conjoined to a mount couped vert.
(Fieldless) A horseshoe sable.
(Fieldless) A horseshoe Or.
This item was pended from ILoI Æ71.
(Fieldless) On a crescent gules a cross moline Or.
This item was pended from ILoI Æ70.
Per fess sable and argent, in chief a house and in base 3 roundels in fess counterchanged.
This depiction of a house can be found in von Volborth, p. 54 fig. 442.
Per fess enarched azure and argent, in base a tree issuant from base sable and a chief wavy argent.
(Fieldless) A rooster vert.
Per fess embattled Or and vert, a tent vert and a dragon segreant Or armed and langued gules.
His device has been redrawn in response to several commenters' concerns about the tent.
To clear up any lingering confusion about Dafydd's name: It is true that the combination of Gaelic and Welsh is not registerable, per an August 2001 ruling (Anton Cwith). However, MacNab is not Gaelic! It is a Scots name (a dialect of English, not Gaelic!) and Scots/Welsh combinations are registerable with only a weirdness.
(Fieldless) A dragon per bend sinister Or and vert armed and langued gules.
Azure, two rapiers in saltire Or and overall a dogwood blossom argent seeded Or.
Ermine, three tygers purpure.
This device has been redrawn in response to commenters' concerns about the size of the tygers.
(Fieldless) A fret couped sable.
Argent, a brown mouse rampant proper maintaining a sword sable and on a chief purpure a longbow argent.
Or chaussé purpure, a natural tiger's head cabossed sable marked argent and a falcon's head erased sable.
This device is being returned for conflict with Thorkell Óláfsson (Purpure, on a pile Or a Danish axe gules). "By long standing precedent, chaussé fields can also be blazoned as charged piles, and both forms must be considered for conflict." Thus, Ghalib's device must be considered equivalent to "Purpure, on a pile Or a natural tiger's head cabossed sable marked argent and a falcon's head erased sable," which gives it only one CD from Thorkell's device, for changes to the tertiaries on the pile.
Vert, a cross moline and on a chief argent three torteaux.
Submitted as Gwenllian o'r Beddgelert, the documentation seems to imply that Beddgelert is a specific place (a town, perhaps?). In Welsh, locatives derived from real places are unmarked; o'r (meaning 'of the' contemplate a name like 'William of the London') is inappropriate and we have dropped it from the name.
Azure, a base Or.
This name is being pended for one month, so that we can track down a copy of the 1993 KWHS Proceedings article from which the given name was documented. The documentation on the form is not clearly summarized, and we are unable to determine what spellings are actually cited in that article. A firsthand inspection is necessary.
Azure, a helmet argent between and conjoined to 3 lightning bolts in pall throughout Or.
This was a case of lost paperwork and miscommunication. He had a previous name (Jochen Blitzkopf) and armory submission; the armory (almost identical to this) was registered under the holding name Jochen of Nithgaard in 02/00, but he was not notified at that time. He is withdrawing this name and device.
This name is in need of input/clarification from the submitter. We have attempted to contact him but have not yet received a reply. This name is being pended for one month to give John a chance to get back to us.
Vert, in pale a trident issuing from a flame argent.
We are pending this name and device for one month until we have heard back from the submitter concerning what changes she will allow to her name.
Originally submitted as Khadel, this was a transcriptional error as Socin lists Khadal but not Khadel. We have corrected the spelling to match the documentation.
(Fieldless) A mascle ployé and overall a bow reversed and a bow sable.
Vert, a griffin sejant argent within an orle of fleurs-de-lys Or.
Sable, three crampons argent.
In answer to our commenters: Yes, Lothar and Hilderun are acquainted, and the possibility that people may interpret their heraldry as reminiscent of one another is intentional and acceptable to both parties.
Azure, a boar's head couped close and a chief argent.
Submitted as Mailagnas Maqqas Dunaidonas, the particle 'maqqas' does not take a capital, and we have made the correction.
Azure, on a fess embattled between thee mullets of eight points argent, a badger statant azure.
Azure, 3 cups and on a chief argent, three fleurs-de-lys azure.
These are beautiful Italian-style fleurs.
Argent crusily flory gules, a heron azure maintaining in its beak a fish gules.
If this is registered she would like her old name to be released.
(Fieldless) A furison sable.
Vert, a wolf statant ululant and on a chief embattled argent three dolphins azure.
(Fieldless) On a cross patonce Or a heart gules.
This is being returned for conflict with Eibhlín ní Chaoimh (On four demi-fleurs conjoined in cross Or a torteau). The four conjoined demi-fleurs are equivalent to a cross flory, and by Laurel precedent there is not a CD between a cross flory and a cross patonce. As a complex cross is not eligible for X.4.j.ii, there is one CD for fieldlessness but no CD between the two types of cross and no CD for change of type only of the tertiary charge.
Per pale azure and vert, a sword inverted argent between a caravel sails furled and a triple towered castle Or.
(Fieldless) A gorilla statant argent.
(Fieldless) A gorilla statant contourny argent.
Sable, a bend sinister gules fimbriated Or between two scorpions argent.
We believe this to be clear of Kelson de la Croix (Sable, a bend sinister gules fimbriated argent, between a Latin cross and an olive branch bendwise sinister argent), with one CD for change of type of secondary charges. As both branches and scorpions are permitted to be bendwise, there may be a second CD for changing the orientation of half of the secondary charges.
Per pale sable and vert, a pall inverted between two owls close respectant and a crescent argent.
Originally submitted as Tiarnach mac Cathail, Tiarnach is a modern (post-period) spelling of the name. We have changed the name to the form that visibly differs the least, as the submitter cares most about the sound and the pre- and post-1200 spellings are pronounced identically.
Gyronny argent and gules, a cross of Toulouse sable.
While our commenters noted correctly that Iakovleva is a feminine patronymic byname, it is also simply the genetive form of the masculine patronymic byname Iakovlev. In the grammar section of Wickenden's Dictioary, it is written: "Just to make things even more fun, one patronymic (the last one if there are two) was sometimes put in the genitive case, which could be easily created by adding an -a on the end of the patronymic. This merely stresses the possessive nature of the name."
Vert, a griffin sejant Or within an orle of fleurs-de-lys argent.
