Letter of Intent #73
Heraldic Flying Circus Commenting Group

Unto Garnet Herald and all those to whom these words may come, Greetings from the Heraldic Flying Circus. Herewith, our comments on IloI #Æ73:

1. Blausa Korsakova

New device: No conflicts found.

2. Esa Baird

New name: Black, p.43, s.n. Bairdie, dates the spelling "Bardy" to 1565. It therefore seems reasonable to suppose that "Bard" could have been spelled "Baird", at least in late period.

3. Gryphon's Keep, Shire of

Although this is a group submission, we notice there is no mention of a supporting petition.

New name: Reaney and Wilson, p.206, s.n. Griffin, gives Griffin filius Gurgen 1130, John Griffen 1230. If they really want the "y", ibid., s.n. Griffith, gives Jone Gryffyth 1524, and, s.n. Griff, John del Gryff 1383. I could not find anything on-line concerning the documentation or history of the original Griffin's Keep submission.

New device: Clear of:

Rowan Killian July of 1999 (via Caid):

Per bend sable and azure, a griffin segreant and on a chief argent three crescents sable.

1 CVD for field, 1 for embattled, none for tertiaries.

Domhnall Ó Catháin February of 1995 (via the East):

Per pale azure and sable, a griffin segreant and on a chief dovetailed argent two floats gules.

1 CVD for field, 1 for changes to number, type, and tincture of tertiaries.

Aodhnait inghean mhic Chárthaigh May of 1998 (via the West):

Sable, a griffin segreant and on a chief argent three fleurs-de-lys sable.

1 CVD for field, 1 for embattled, none for tertiaries.

4. Lyev Davidovitch

New badge: This is definitely trian aspect, but I'm not sure how you would draw volant to sinister so it wouldn't be.

Possible conflicts:

Petr Aleksivich of Novgorod January of 1974:

Azure, semy of stars a naturelle, overall a hawk volant to sinister argent.

1 CVD for stars, none for type of hawk.

Taira den Fharraigi Thiar February of 1983 (via the Middle):

Per fess indented azure and Or, in chief a swallow volant to sinister argent.

1 CVD for field, none for position, or type of bird(?)

But consider the precedent from Dame Elsbeth: "As rising is a reasonable posture for both ravens and hawk, we would normally give a CD for the change of type of the bird." [Grainne of Aileach, 02/01, R-Artemisia]

In re-design, be aware of:

Amron the Stygian October of 1976:

Sable, a hawk volant to sinister, wings aventred, Or.

5. Rashid al-Tayyib

New device: Note this, from Master Da'ud re: Gail of the Outlands (via the Outlands):

Per pale vert and sable, a marmot rampant to sinister argent." The critter was blazoned in the LoI as a gopher, but that name is a 19th century borrowing. We have, therefore, substituted the Old World rodent which is almost identical in build." [3/94, p.11]

No conflicts found.

6. Sergei Bolotnikov

New device: Per PicDic, #574, s.v. Point, "the sides are properly drawn with concave sides, but flat sides seem to be within the artist's license." No conflicts found.

7. Thomas Lestrange

New name: No comments except, "Really nice name!".

8. Wilhelm Smydele von Solingen

New device: Opinion was divided as to whether the bordure was too thick. The submitter might want to trim it down just a bit, as the sable makes it very heavy visually.

Possible conflict:

Pomerania December of 1994 (via Laurel):

Argent, a griffin segreant gules crowned Or.

Important non-SCA arms

1 CVD for bordure, none for halo or maintained charge.

Until next month, we remain

Yours in heraldic service,

Edmund Lambert Tregelles,

Elizabeth Law, Icedragon Pursuivant,
