Thanks to commenters Aryanhwy, Aurenca, Cadell, Cnute, Edmund, Elizabeth, Elsbeth, Juliana, Kieran, Myfanwy, Odriana, and Otfrid. You all know that we couldn't do it without you, right? The items accepted in this letter have been forwarded to Laurel on XLoI Æ73 (December 24); they will be decided on in April 2004.
Gules, on a sun argent a decrescent gules and in base an Oriental dragon passant argent.
These items were pended from ILoI Æ72. Unfortunately, we could not find sufficient documentation for the first element of this name. We found some inconclusive documentation for a similar name, Avarga, but none of the documentation supported it as a personal name. Furthermore, the change from Aburgha to Avarga is a major change, disallowed by the submitter. Without a name, we are forced to return the device as well.
Argent, a monster consisting of the upper half of a moor and the lower half of a tree stump eradicated proper maintaining in its dexter hand a hammer sable, a ford proper.
His submissions were pended from ILoI Æ72. As mentioned in that LoR, we have ruled that "Enstone on Tyne" is not a plausible constructed placename. The name has been changed to Adam of Enstone as per consultation with the submitter.
Vert, three fox's masks and on a chief argent three increscents azure.
Gules, a gryphon segreant and on a chief embattled argent a laurel wreath between two pheons inverted sable.
While the submissions form is for "Gryphon's Keep," which the group says is their preferred spelling, the petition is for "Griffin's Keep." This is being pended until we can get a petition that accurately reflects their spelling preferences and matches their submission forms.
This submission was pended from ILoI Æ72. It has been overhauled with input from the submitter and more research. To see the new documentation, please reference XLoI Æ73.
This submission was pended from ILoI Æ72. Discussion with Talan provided enough of the citation from the article to look up the original data in Diez Melcon and include it in the external letter.
Vert, in pale a trident issuing from a flame argent.
These items were pended from ILoI Æ72. Originally submitted as Katherine Loch Duibh, Loch is a naked noun, which would not have been used unmodified as a name element. We have changed the spelling to correct the grammar as best we can.
Azure, a sparrowhawk volant to sinister argent.
This badge is being returned for conflict with Rannveigr Haakonardottir (Azure, a falcon close contourny argent) and the House of Este's real-world arms (Azure, an eagle displayed argent crowned Or). In each case there is a CD for posture, but nothing for type. Since evidence suggests that the sparrowhawk was not used in period armory, the sparrowhawk would at best be grouped with other hawks. There would not be a CD between a falcon and a sparrowhawk, nor between an eagle and a sparrowhawk.
We recommend to Lyev that he resubmit this badge, fieldless. The fieldless version appears to be free of conflict.
Several commenters expressed concern over the 'trian aspect' of this depiction. We direct your attention to CA #60 (An Encheiridion – The Education of a Scribe) which claims that this type of volant (one wing up and one wing down) is the recommended style; a picture appears here.
Per fess argent and vert, two gophers courant contourny and another courant proper.
This device is being returned for violation of RfS VIII.2c Armorial Contrast. As submitted, the lower gopher is brown on green (color on color).
Gules, two wolves combattant and in chief a mullet argent, a point pointed ermine.
Nice name!
Argent, a griffin segreant gules winged sable haloed Or maintaining a rapier all within a bordure sable.
This is an administrative swap of his device and his badge. His current arms Ermine, two scarpes pean between a lion rampant to sinister azure and a unicorn passant gules is to be redesignated as a badge. His current badge Ermine, a lion rampant to sinister azure is to be redesignated as a device. A signed letter stating that this is his intent is included.
