Unto Ailis Garnet, Roana Cornelian, and the commenting heralds of AEthelmearc does Cadell Comet send greetings! Enclosed, please find our commentary on Internal Letter AE76. Unless otherwise specified, we found name documentation to be as listed, and all devices to be free of conflict through the latest online Ordinary.
I was assisted in this commentary by Elsbeth Anne Roth, Kieran MacRae, Odriana cander Brugghe, Aurenca Mouly.
1. Ælfgyfu seo hearpestre – name, device
We are unsure as to the authenticity of an occupational byname in Anglo-Saxon culture, especially for females; however, this name should be registerable. The only registration of this form that we could find was Ellen aergod seo freothuwebbe (8/94 Middle). In the 3/95 LoAR "Colvert Everard Scolaighe en Taeppsetre" was returned by Laurel, who stated that "Appropriate OE forms would be 'se tæppere' [male] and 'seo tæppestre' [female]."
This device has one weirdness for a non-eagle in a displayed posture. We are reasonably confident that there are no other weirdnesses present in this device; therefore, this device is registerable.
However, we feel this may conflict with Francesca of Bright Angel (1/73): "Azure, a dove displayed head elevated argent," with one CD for the addition of the secondaries. Given the non-period postures of the two birds in question, we feel that no second CD should be given for the type of bird.
This may also conflict with Dovanna of Atenveldt (8/71): "Azure, a dove wings displayed and inverted argent perched upon an olive branch fesswise proper;" there is one CD for addition of the secondaries, but as we do not know if the olive branch is a co-primary or maintained charge, we cannot tell if it garners the second point of difference.
Additionally, this may conflict with House of Este (12/94): "Azure, an eagle displayed argent crowned Or," again with one CD for the addition of secondaries, but there may or may not be a second CD for type of bird.
3. Bryan Adyngton – name, device
In addition to the submitted documentation, Withycombe (s.n. Brian) states "Brian or Bryan has from early times been a favourite in Ireland on account of the national hero Brian Boroimhe."
We recommend that this be reblazoned "Per chevron throughout sable and argent, three Latin crosses urdy counterchanged argent and vert."
4. Gyles de Blair – name, device
We wish to mention Anéžka z Rožmitála (11/01 Ansteorra): "Gules, in dexter chief a fret couped argent." There is a CD for the addition of the chief, but given the rulings between frets and fretty, while we are reasonably sure that there should be a second CD for the number of primary charges, we wanted to bring it to Garnet and Cornelian's attentions.
