Letter of Intent #77
Comet Commenting Group

Unto Ailis Garnet, Roana Cornelian, and the Æthelmearc College of Heralds does Cadell Blaidd du, Comet Pursuivant, send greetings! Enclosed, please find the Comet Commenting group's, well, commentary :-) on ILoI AE77. I was assisted in the formulation of this letter by Odriana vander Brugghe and Aurenca Mouly.

Unless otherwise noted, consider all name documentation to be as cited, and all devices free of conflict and style issues.

1. Ældric of Logan - Name, Device

Name: R&W (s.n. Aldrich) dates <Alric> and <Alricus> to 1066, and <Elric> to 1066 and <Elricus> undated. Therefore, given the citation of <Ældricus> given in the documentation, <Ældric> seems a plausible variation. R&W (s.n. Logan) does actually list Logan as a locative byname ("From Logan (Ayr[shire]), or from minor places of this name."), therefore the "of Logan" construction is valid.

3. Aidan Ransford - Name, Device

Name: There is a August 2001 precedent ("Aidan MacPherson") upholding the September 2000 decision that <Aidan> is registerable as an Anglicized version of <Áedán>. Therefore we disagree with Aryanhwy's comment that this name has two weirdnesses: the Anglicization of <Áedán> as <Aidan> eliminates the "lingual incompatibility," therefore the name only has one weirdness for temporal incompatibility.

Device: Regarding the drawing of the "raindrops:" There are two precedents that we feel are appropriate in this case, although there seems to be one to argue each side of whether or not the gouttes need to be redrawn. François Laurel ruled on Siobhan inghean ui Dhonnabhain in 01/03 that "A correctly drawn goutte, with a long wavy tail, is substantially different from a roundel." However, Jaelle Laurel ruled on Marie Elaine de Womwell in 08/96 that "...there are some period exemplars of gouttes shaped like a modern tear drop..." Given that the 01/03 ruling does not explicitly outlaw "tear drop" shaped gouttes, these should still be registerable as drawn.

The blazon, however, should probably be changed to "goutty de larmes."

4. Étaìn inghean Ruaidrí - Name, Device

Name: Unfortunately, having the submitter accept absolutely no changes has spelled her downfall, as this name must be returned for the direction of the accent on the "i" in <Étaìn> (unless, of course, this was a typo on the ILoI, and we request that Garnet and Cornelian check the original forms before making a final decision).

If she wants an authentic 13th century name, the form listed in OC&M after the colon (in this case, <Éadaoin>) would be the appropriate spelling. If she wants something closer to the form she submitted, the correct spelling would be <Étaín> (note the "acute" accent on the i, as opposed to the "grave" accent as submitted). In either case, the patronymic byname is constructed correctly, but in either case, as previously stated, the name must be returned.

Device: Again, unfortunately, as Kingdom cannot assign holding names, the return of the name requires the return of this device.

5. Kjøtvi Thorgrimsson - Name

The forms listed in Geirr Bassi are spelled <Kj{o,}tvi> and <Þorgrímr>, not <Kjøtvi> and <Thorgrimr>. Silly Vikings and their weird letter molestations...

6. Simon Savastain Caminante - Name, Device

Device: Cadell says: I did this device consult?! I don't remember it. I remember the name, but...

We agree with Aryanhwy's comment about having to redraw the weasel.

And that, as they say, is that.

In Service,
Cadell Blaidd du, Comet Pursuivant
