Æthelmearc Letter of Report Æ78
June 1, 2004

Many thanks to May’s commenters: Aryanhwy, the Comet group (Cadell Comet, Kieran MacRae, Odriana vander Brugghe), the Heraldic Dismay (Egill the Dane, Gilles de Beauchamps, Rosamunde of Axbridge), the Heronter group (Bjorn Eirnarsson, Catherine Sheffield, Cigfran Caer Gwalch, Dagonell Whitehorn, Michelle of the Manor Meow), Knute, and Myfanwy ferch Rhiannon. Thanks a million, guys!

The items accepted in this letter have been forwarded to Laurel on XLoI Æ78 (June 24); they will be decided on in October 2004.

1. Amaryllis Coleman –Badge resubmission accepted

(Fieldless) An amaryllis flower Or seeded sable.

We are passing this submission to Wreath for comparison with Karol Johanna Gartenheit "(Fieldless) A jonquil blossom bell to chief Or" and Winter's Gate, Barony of "Sable, a lily blossom Or." In each case, there is a single CD for fieldlessness and possibly a second CD for type, which we are unable to determine at the Kingdom level.

2. Br{o,}ndólfr Ásgeirsson – New name and device accepted

Gules, a stone throwing hammer and on a chief argent two ravens sable.

Originally submitted as Br{o,}ndólfr Asgeirsson, Norse names are registerable with the accents consistently included or consistently omitted. As Geirr Bassi documents Ásgeirr with an accent, we have added the accent to match.

3. Catarina di Galaxio – New name accepted

Lovely name!

4. Catherine Sheffield – New name accepted

5. Creature Twyne Dragon – New name and device accepted

Sable, a dragon’s head cabossed argent.

An animal’s head cabossed is affronty by definition.

6. Duncan Blackwater – New name accepted

7. Esa Baird – New device accepted

Gules, on a pale Or between two gillyflowers argent three owl’s heads cabossed gules.

8. Geal Mor, Canton of – New name and device returned

Per chevron sable and vert, a chevron between in chief three lozenges argent and in base a laurel wreath Or.

This name is being returned for lack of documentation and incorrect formation. No documentation was provided by the submitters, and none was offered by commenters, supporting the use of geal in a Gaelic placename. In fact, no documentation was provided to establish any sort of pattern in Gaelic place names. Additionally, the submitters requested authenticity for "Irish/Gaelic" and supported mor only as an Anglo-Saxon word. Given the lack of documentation and the mixing of a Gaelic adjective with an Anglo-Saxon noun, we are returning this name. Without a name, we must return the armory as well. For any who are interested in Irish placenames, we suggest "A Dictionary of Irish Place-Names" by Adrian Room.

9. Giovanna Morosini – New name and device accepted

Azure, an ivy leaf and on a chief Or three roses sable.

As "di Morosini" is grammatically incorrect, we consulted with the submitter and she chooses to drop the "di."

10. Helene al-Zarqa’– New name and device accepted

Azure, a dance between three semiminims Or.

11. Henri d’Artois – New alternate name Henri d’Eu accepted

12. Maria Adriane – New name accepted

13. Maximilian Von Petsch – New name returned

We are returning this name for incorrect construction. German names use "von" (meaning "of") as a marker with locative bynames. Petsch is not a place, but is a form of "Peter." Since Petsch is not a place, you cannot be "von Petsch." Although the name would be registerable without the "von," dropping it is a major change which the submitter does not allow.

14. Nichola of Castile – New name accepted

This fine lady is the mother of Rosalinda of Castile, and Nichola specifically wants the spelling "of Castile" to match, despite its being less than fully authentic.

15. Phiala O'Ceallaigh – New device accepted

Vert, a fret and overall a mascle argent.

We are concerned about the identifiability of the charges in this design. The device may be in violation of the RfS VIII.3, Armorial Identifiability. However, we feel that this is a decision to be made by the entire CoA.

16. Saerlaith the Seamstress – New name accepted, new device returned

Per bend vert and sable, a dragon segreant contourny argent maintaining a spool of tread argent threaded vert.

This device is being returned for multiple conflicts: Catriona Danica MacRae (Sable, an eagle-winged dragon rampant to sinister coward argent, maintaining in dexter forepaw a sword enflamed Or); Mindrakken van der Zilver (Purpure, a dragon, sejant erect sinister facing, argent); Myfanwy ferch Dafydd (Per bend sinister azure and argent, ermined azure, in chief a dragon rampant to sinister argent); Volgaar Thorgulson the Bold (Sable, a two-headed wyvern erect contouorni argent, the dexter head incensed of flames proper, the sinister head incensed of lightning bolts fesswise, grasping in dexter claw a human skull affronti Or). In each case there is a single CD for changes to the field, but no CD for insignificant changes to the posture or for changes to maintained charges.

17. Thescorre, Barony of – New badge accepted

Per bend sinister sable and Or, an oak leaf bendwise sinister and an ink bottle counterchanged.

This badge was pended from LoR Æ76; we are forwarding it to Laurel at this time.

18. Thescorre, Barony of – New order name Order of the Broche and new badge accepted

Argent, in base two bars wavy azure overall a penannular broach pin open to base sable.

Originally submitted as "Order of the Broach" we have consulted with the submitters and changed the spelling to match available documentation. Our research revealed that a broach is "a tapering pointed instrument or thing" which has historically encompassed such items as lances, spears, bodkins, awls, spits, and candle-spikes – not a round pin or fastener, which is a brooch or broche.

19. Thescorre, Barony of – New order name Order of the Black Talon and new badge accepted

Argent, an eagle’s toe couped fesswise sable and in base two bars wavy azure.

Due to concerns about the identifiability of the charge, the eagle’s toe has been redrawn to have a more recognizable shape and more internal details.
