ÆTHELMEARC COLLEGE OF HERALDS - commentary archive
Letter of Intent #85
Heronter Heralds Commenting Group

Unto the new Garnet Herald, Lord Christopher Harper, greetings from the Heronter
Heralds, a division of the Heraldic Flying Circus and Moving Company, West.
Herein are our comments on ILoI AE85.

1. AEthelmearc, Kingdom of -

New order name: Ordre du Cheval de Fer

First of all, the OED cites a 1609 spelling as "Chevall" and we note the
construction of "cheval de bataille" (obsession) and "cheval de frisse"
(barricade) so the construction is presumably correct.

Several members of our group noted that "Iron Horse" was nickname for early
railroad engines. However, we think that hearing the French form rather than
the English form is less likely to conjure up the obtrusively modern image.

We scanned "A Collection of Period Order Names"
by Lord Frederic Badger, Black Stag Herald for the Kingdom of An Tir, and
Project Ordensnamen by Meradudd Cethin
(http://www.sca.org/heraldry/laurel/names/order) on the SCA home page.
While we found period order names with colors, e.g. Black Swan, White Eagle,
Yellow Ribbon, Green Shield, etc. We didn't find any metals other than
"Golden", which leads us to believe that golden was meant to be a tincture
rather than a metallic adjective in period.

However, a perusal of Webster's Second turned up "The Order of the Iron Cross"
(Prussia, 1813), and "The Order of the Iron Crown" (Austria, 1805) albeit
out-of-period.

It's our opinion that the order name is "SCA-compliant", about as authentic as
the Order of the Silver Buccle and the Order of the Silver Alce, another
metal not used in period.

2. Alric of the Mists -

Resubmitted device: "Per bend sinister purpure and sable, a wyvern sejant
within a bordure embattled Or."

No conflicts found

3. Chie're une Clergesse - New name,

It's our opinion that the name should be either "Chire're Clergesse"
(Cheri Clerk), or "Chie're la Clergesse" (Cheri the Clerk) and not
"Chie're une Clergesse" (Cheri, a clerk).

New device: "Argent, on a chevron cotised sable three crosses clechy argent."

No conflicts found

4. Coeddu, Shire of - Resubmitted name device

We're not certain, but we believe the two words should either be hyphenated
(Coed-du) or spaced (Coed du). When two 'd's are brought together in Welsh,
they produce a 'th' sound, which changes the pronounciation.

Resubmitted device: "Argent, a tree blasted and eradicated sable within a
laurel wreath vert and on a chief sable three mullets argent. "

No conflicts found
