Unto the Æthelmearc College of Heralds and all others who may read these words, does Christopher Harper, Garnet Herald, send greetings! I respectfully submit these items and this letter for your comments and critiques. Thank you to everyone who sent comments as well as personal notes. I have heard your words and, as ever, I appreciate your patience as I grow into this position. As you may note, the Letter of Report for ILoI 86 is not included.  I will be reading your comments, making my decisions and preparing LoR 86 and XLoI 86 within the week. The Letter of Report will be included with the next issue of the Æsch. Thank you for your time, efforts and especially your commentary.

It is the intent of the Æthelmearc College of Heralds that the following items be considered for registration.  Unless otherwise noted, submitters will accept any changes.


1. Aimeric de MiravalNew name, New device

Azure, a viola, in chief three crosses clechy Or.

This name is intended to be masculine. The submitter will accept any changes.

 The submission includes photocopies of pages from The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians (paperback ed., 1995), specifically pages 179, 189 and 542. There are two biographies of  troubadours, Aimeric de Peguilhan (c1175-c1230) and Raimon de Miraval (fl 1180-1215). Troubadours are defined and listed on p. 189; Aimeric de Peguilhan’s biography is on p. 179, while Raimon de Miraval is on p. 542. 

Miraval is cited as being a castle north of Carcassonne.

Aislinn – header form in O’Corrain and Maguire; OCM notes “[u]ntil the beginning of this century, Aislinn was in use as a female name in Derry and Omeath”.  Daďi notes  that “while we don’t have documentation as period, it’s not modern. Also, I personally remember variants being passed before – Talan as Pelican changed one to “Ashling””.

She wishes to retain her old name, Khazima bint Hakim (registered in February 2002 via AEthelmearc) as an alternate persona, while  the new name will be her primary name. Her old device (registered in May 2002 via AEthelmearc) is to be retained as a badge.

Collette – from Aryanhwy merch Catmael, “French Names from Paris 1423 & 1438” (WWW: J. Mittleman, 2002) [URL: http://www.sit.wisc.edu/~sfriedemann/names/paris1423.htm]. Collette occurs several times.

de Paris – Dauzat and Rostaing, p. 519 – Paris is mentioned but no names or dates are given and the consulting herald doesn’t read French. Also notable is Matthew of Paris, the 13th century chronicler.

This name is intended to be masculine.  The submitter accepts any changes.

Edward is a header form in Withythcombe; Edward I ascended to the English throne in 1272.

Harbinger is from the Oxford English Dictionary (no edition cited)  - OED s. n. <Harbinger>

2. “one sent on before to purvey lodgings for an army” 1386 herbergrours; 1471 herbengars; 1524 arbinger; 1525 herbyngers. 3. “one that goes before and announces the approach of some one; a forerunner” 1550 herbegers; 1572 harbenger; 1630 harbinger.

Several of the cited occurrences appear directly following given names, supporting the word’s use as an occupational byname, at least in writing.

The name is intended to be feminine.  The submitter will accept any changes. Alheydis notes on the form that the combination of Scots and Italian as one step from period practice (Laertes McBride 8/99). The submitter wishes to communicate that if the phrase <de Verona> makes this name unregisterable, she will accept its deletion

Gillian - Talan Gwynek’s article “Feminine Given Names in _A Dictionary of English Surnames_” cites both Giliane and Gillian to the 13th century. Gilliane seems a reasonable combination of the double “L” and the final “e”.

McGill - is a header form in Reany & Wilson, Macgeil dated to 1231 and M’Gill dated to 1550.

de - Anglo-Norman designator meaning “from”.

Verona - is cited as a placename in Aryanhwy merch Catmael, “Italian Given Names from the Online Tratte of Office Holders 1282-1532” (WWW: S. L. Friedemann, 2001-2002) [URL: http://www.ellipsis.cx/~liana/names/florence1282-1532.html].

The university of Verona was founded in 1222.

The original name submitted was Robert Peel and was returned at Kingdom level on Letter of Report 82 (December 1, 2004). No new documentation included for the addition of the placename.

This name is intended to be masculine. The submitter requests authenticity for 16th century time period and accepts any changes.

Robert is a header form in Withycombe, with various spellings dated from 1071-1507. The name Robert accounts for 6% of men's names in England circa 1530-1700, according to Christian de Holacombe's article, "Faire Names for English Folk: Late Sixteenth Century English Names."

Peel is a header form in Bardsley, with one Robert Peel of Black Burn in 1577.
