Æthelmearc Letter of Report Æ89
November 24, 2005 (AS 40)

Greetings from Garnet and Cornelian,

Our thanks go out to those who provided commentary on this letter, especially Myfanwy ferch Rhiannon, and those who provided the much-needed commentary and direction on the device of Yamahara Yorimasa.

The items accepted on this letter have been forwarded to Laurel for further consideration, where we expect they will be decided on in March 2006.

1Catherine Sheffield – Resubmitted device accepted

Per chevron argent and gules, two garbs and a cross bottony counterchanged.

Originally blazoned on the ILoI as Per chevron argent and gules, two sheafs of wheat and a cross bottony counterchanged. We have reblazoned following suggestions by commentary.

2Delftwood, Barony of – Order Name Appeal, Order of the Mistral, automatically forwarded to Laurel

3Delftwood, Barony of – Order Name Appeal, Order of the Mistral, automatically forwarded to Laurel

4Marija Kotok – New name, new device accepted

Azure, in pale a lion-dragon passant Or and an open book argent.

Originally blazoned on the ILoI as Azure, a lion-dragon passant Or, an open book argent. We have reblazoned following suggestions by commentary.

Regarding the device, commentary raised the question as to whether the illustrations on the pages of the book should be blazoned as tertiary charges, or left unblazoned as artistic embellishment per the submitter’s notations. Note that on the color emblazon, the drawings on the book are treated as uncolored line drawings. We have asked Wreath to clarify this and change the blazon as necessary.

5Marija Kotok – New badge returned

(Fieldless) a catamount couchant argent

On the September 2000 LoAR, Laurel returned the badge, (Fieldless) A lion couchant guardant argent, for conflict:

Conflict with Ellen of Caer Seiont, Pean, a domestic cat dormant guardant argent, Kareina Talvi Tytar, Azure, vetû, a long-haired domestic cat dormant argent, and James Winter of White Forest, Per fess sable and ermine, in chief a lion dormant argent. As there is not a CD between dormant and couchant, and there is no CD for position on the field against a fieldless badge, in all cases there is only a single CD for the change in the field.

Marija’s submitted badge is essentially identical to the badge returned by Laurel. A catamount is a variant of a lion (a maneless lion). The differring head position (guardant vs. not guardant) does not affect the reasons for conflict.

6Mathias Kotok – New name, new device accepted

Azure, on a plate embattled argent, a cross pointed between four Passion nails, heads to center, gules.

The submitted emblazon included an additional line encircling the embattled plate. We removed the extraneous line to match the blazon. As originally drawn, the plate embattled argent would have rested on a roundel sable (plain-lined). With the plate itself having tertiary charges, this would have violated our limitation on layers.

7.  Morgen of Rye – New name accepted

8Petr Kotok – New name accepted

Per chevron argent and gules, two sheafs of wheat and a cross bottony counterchanged

9Yamahara Yorimasa – New name, new device accepted

Gules, in pale a kanji Yama and a kanji Hara argent.

Originally submitted as Yorimasa Yamahara with the device blazoned as Gules, a kanji argent and pended on our Letter of Report Æ 88. Further discussion with the submitter clarifies that Yamahara is intended as the family name, while Yorimasa is intended as the given name. We have corrected the order of the names to follow Japanese practice.

Regarding the device, Laurel precedent prohibits the registration of an abstract symbol as a sole primary charge. Commentary noted that the central charge on the submitted emblazon was actually comprised of two kanji. Following discussion with the submitter, we have redrawn the device as having two separate kanji in pale, and we have changed the blazon accordingly.

This concludes Æethelmearc Letter of Report #AE89.
