Æthelmearc Letter of Report Æ90/91
December 18, 2005 (AS 40)

Greetings from Garnet and Cornelian!

Many thanks to those who offered commentary and advice, especially Myfanwy ferch Rhiannon for being so faithful and thorough, and for providing early commentary on ILoI Æ 91 so that those items might be expedited to Laurel on this letter. Many thanks also to Ailis Linne for her great patience and valued tutelage!

The items accepted on this letter have been forwarded to Laurel for further consideration, where we expect they will be decided on in April of 2006.

1Éadaoin inghean Chanagáin – New name, new device accepted

Or, in pale two otters statant purpure.

2Marguerite de Neufchâteau – New name, new device accepted

Azure, two chevronels, that to chief embattled, between three wolf heads erased argent.

Commentary raised the question of whether it is good period style to combine the embattled chevronel with a plain-line chevronel. We have requested further research by the College of Arms on this issue.

3Michael Gladewyne – New name, new device accepted

Argent, in bend two hawks rising, wings inverted and addorsed gules.

This spelling of the byname is corrected from the spelling, <Gladwyne>, which was introduced as a typographical error on ILoI Æ 86, accepted and pended.

4Tancred of Thescorre – New name accepted

5Wilhelm Smydele von Soelinge – Resubmitted device accepted

Argent, a double-horned anvil sable within a bordure vert.

Commentary noted a possible conflict with Richard of Black Iron (badge, 7/89 Caid), Argent, a single-horned anvil reversed sable, enflamed proper.

The cover letter to the June 1993 LoAR discusses enflaming in period style vs. SCA style. It states in part:

…Second, by the period definition of enflaming an enflamed [charge] is definitely the main charge; but by the old SCA definition, an enflamed [charge] is now considered a tertiary charge. We'd count Sufficient Difference, per X.2, between a lion Or enflamed gules and a tower Or enflamed gules, but no difference at all, per X.4.j.ii, between on a flame gules a lion Or and on a flame gules a tower Or.

This was applied to the cited badge of Richard of Black Iron on the September 2002 LoAR, which included the following registration with commentary:

Leonardo Giovanni. Name and device. Per bend argent and vert, a single-horned anvil sable.

This does not conflict with a badge of Richard of Black Iron, Argent, a single-horned anvil reversed sable, enflamed proper. There is one CD for changing the field and another for removing the significant enflaming of Richard's anvil. We considered reblazoning Richard's armory as a flame proper charged with an anvil sable, but the shape of the flame so generated would be so unusual as to be unacceptable. Therefore we are maintaining the current blazon.

This concludes our Letter of Report Æ 90/91.
