It
is the intent of the Æthelmearc College of Heralds that the
following items be
considered for registration. Unless noted otherwise, submitters will
accept any
changes.
1. Éadaoin
inghean Chanagáin – new name, new device
Or,
in pale two otters statant purpure.
The name is intended to be feminine. The submitter
will accept any
changes and cares most about the sound of the name. The submitter is
not
requesting authenticity. No change was made to the submitted form by
the
Æthelemearc College of Heralds.
Éadaoin – OCM,
p.
90, s.n. Étaín, gives <Éadaoin> as
the later (post-1200) form.
inghean – later
(post-1200) form of the Gaelic meaning “daughter”
Chanagáin – OCM,
p.
45, s.n. Canacán, gives <Canagán> as the later
(post-1200) form.
<Chanagáin > should be the lenited genitive form.
2. Marguerite
de Neufchâteau – new name, new device
Azure, two
chevronels, that to chief embattled, between three wolf
heads erased argent.
The name intended to feminine. The submitter will
accept any changes
and cares most about the meaning “Margaret from a place meaning ‘new
castle’”.
The submitter is not requesting authenticity.
Marguerite – Dauzat,
Albert. Dictionnaire Etymologique des Noms de Famille et des
Prenoms de
France, p. 416 s.n. Marguerite, gives this as the header form.
Dauzat
describes it as a baptismal name that gave rise to a sizable number of
matronyms, an example of which he gives as:
Margarie
(latinisé
en Margeria, Marguerite, XIIe s., Bourgogne) […12th
century,
Burgundy.]
Note that the submitted spelling is referenced here,
but we are
uncertain whether Dauzat is documenting the submitted spelling to the 12th
century, or simply translating and normalizing the Latin.
Additionally, “Sixteenth Century Norman Names,” by
Cateline de la Mor
(Triste Elliot) at
http://www.s-gabriel.org/names/cateline/norman16.html dates
the submitted spelling to the 16th century.
de – French
preposition meaning “of” or “from”
Neufchâteau – Dauzat
& Rostaing, Dictionnaire Etymologique de Noms de Lieux en France,
p.
493, s.n. Neufchâteau, gives this as the header form, describing
it as a
variant of <Neuchâtel>
Ibid, p. 493, s.n. Neufchâtel-Urtiere, dates
the locality of
Neufchâteau to 1094 (latinized as Novum Castrum).
Commentary raised the question of whether it is good
period style to
combine the embattled chevronel with a plain-line chevronel. We would
request
further research by the College of Arms on this issue.
3. Michael
Gladewyne – new name, new device
Argent,
in bend two hawks rising, wings inverted and addorsed gules.
The
submitter’s
name was originally presented to the Æthelmearc College of
Heralds as
<Micheal Gladwyne>, accepted and subsequently pended so that his
device
submission could catch up to it and accompany it to Laurel. The
spelling
<Gladwyne>, however, had been introduced as a typographical error
on our
Internal Letter. The name was then republished to the Æthelmearc
College with
the spelling corrected to the submitted form, <Gladewyne>, along
with his
device submission.
This name is intended to be
masculine. The submitter accepts minor changes only, and cares most
about
authenticity for late 1500s English language/culture. The submitter is
not
requesting authenticity.
Michael – Withycombe, 3rd ed., p. 218,
s.n. Michael gives this
header spelling dated to 1196-1215, 1218, 1303, 1346 and 1279.
Gladewyne – Bardsley, p. 320, s.n. Gladwin, dates
<Gladewyne> to 1273.
Also included is a copy of Report 2960 from the Academy of Saint
Gabriel that
dates <Gladewyne> to 1273, 1279x1290, 1327.
4.
Tancred
of Thescorre – New Name
The name is intended to be masculine. The submitter
will accept all
changes, and cares most about sound and Norman language and culture of
the 11th-13th
century. The submitter is not requesting authenticity.
Tancred -
Withycombe, 3rd ed., p. 275, s.n. Tancred, describes
<Tancred>
as the Norman French spelling.
Dauzat, Dictionnaire des Noms de Famille et
Prenoms de France,
p. 562, s.n. Tancrède, describes the name as an ancient
baptismal name of
German origin, a Norman name (11th c.).
Thescorre – SCA
group name registered as the Barony of Thescorre “at some point”,
according to
the online Armorial.
5. Wilhelm
Smydele von Soelinge – Resubmitted Device
Argent,
a double-horned anvil sable within a bordure vert.
His name was registered in
April of 2004.
His previous device submission, Argent, a
griffin segreant
gules haloed Or maintaining a rapier all within a bordure sable,
was
returned by Laurel on LoAR of April 2004. A subsequently resubmitted
device, Argent,
a griffin sergeant gules, winged sable, haloed Or, maintaining a

bordure sable, was returned at kingdom for conflict on
Æthelmearc Letter of

Laurel-level
