Letter of Intent #93
Heronter Heralds

Unto Garnet Herald, Cornelian Herald, and the Aethelmearc College of Arms; Greetings from the Heronter Heralds, a division of the Heraldic Flying Circus and Moving Company, Southwest.

Herewith, our commentary on AE93, dated March 1, 2006.

2. Anton Vadim - New Name, New Device.

"Per fess sable and purpure, thirteen double-bitted axes Or."

No conflicts found.

"The submitter expressed an interest in the number thirteen, but is also amenable to blazoning this as semy. If blazoned as thirteen, do we need to specify the arrangement as two, three, two, three, two and one?"

Not unlike Archimedies, I think in terms of triangular numbers when it comes to heraldry.  Since 13 is between 10 and 15, I would arrange the charges as 3, 4, 3, 2, 1.  My wife suggested 4, 3, 3, 2, 1 might be the 'default' for 13. Given that we can't agree on the 'default', it might be best to specify the arrangement. If it is blazoned as semy, make sure that it is blazoned as 'semy throughout' to indicate that the axes are on both the top and bottom half of the device. -- Dagonell Whitehorn

3. Beibhinn Mackynnay - New Device

"Per bend engrailed argent and sable, a raven and a decrescent counterchanged."

Conflict: Aoibhel of Dun Holen|8904E|D| "Per bend sinister sable and argent, a raven and a decrescent counterchanged." We definitely count one for the field, we don't think there's a difference for the change of colors since they're all field dependent and we don't think there's a difference for change of positions since the ravens are both 'in chief' and the crescents are both 'in base'.

In re-design, beware of: Simon of Ravenwood|9412K|D| "Per bend sinister embattled sable and argent, a decrescent and a raven contourny counterchanged." Same argument as above, but additional points for changing the position of the bird and crescent.

4. Camy inghean Mhic Culloch of Cardoness - New Name

inghean Mhic -- Black, pg. 375 Mhic -- Black, pg. 628 (s.n. Nic) MacCulloch -- Black, pg. 483, assorted spellings from 1296 thru 1694.

First, we suspect that this is actually an earlier form of the name and that by the 16th c. surnames might be inherited rather than patronymous, making the name simply be Camy MacCulloch.  Second, "Cardoness Castle was built by the McCulloch family" strikes us that this name might be presumptuous. Is there someone more knowledgable about Scottish history that can confirm or deny this?

6. Kaolin Sigvaldiskona - New Name, New Device

"Per bend sinister wavy argent and gules, four domestic cats counterchanged."

The default arrangement for four charges is two and two.  If the arrangement is important to the submitter, they have to be blazoned as 'in cross'.

Possible conflict: Andrea of Carlisle (Device, 12/87, Atlantia) "Per saltire argent and azure, four domestic cats sejant guardant counterchanged." We count one for the field.  Given that the field is saltire instead of quarterly, we suspect the arrangement of the cats is also 'in cross'. Nothing for guardant vs non-guardant and the tinctures are field-dependant.

In re-design, beware of: Philippa Graves (Device, 7/00, AEthelmearc) "Per saltire argent and vert, four cats couchant counterchanged sable and argent." One for field, one for couchant vs. sejant, one for tinctures.

7. Sifrid der Blint - New Name, New Device

The top of the form says "Blint", the documentation says "Blind".  We're assuming the latter is a typo?

8. Sigvaldi inn enski - New Name, New Device

"Per chevron argent and sable, a crescent counterchanged."

Clear of:  Jennet of Amberley|9006W|D| "Per pale sable and argent, a crescent counterchanged and a chief vert." One for field, one for chief.

9. Sorcha inghean Airt - New Device

"Vert, on a lozenge argent a butterfly displayed azure and a chief wavy argent."

Clear of:  Amber Lang|9403Q|D| "Vert, on a lozenge argent, a cat sejant guardant sable." Nothing for field, nothing for lozenge, one for chief, one for type and color of tertiary.  We suspect this is what her device conflicted against the first time.  No other conflicts found.

10. Sven Tyrvisson - New Device (kingdom resub)

"Vert, a Thor's hammer inverted and in chief three mullets of six points Or."

Clear of:  Styrbjorn Halte|9408D|D| "Vert, in pale a crescent inverted and a Thor's hammer Or." Nothing for field, two for mullets vs. crescent, one for inversion of hammer.
