Letter of Intent #96 Heronter Heralds
Commenting Group
Unto Garnet Herald, Cornelian Herald, and the Aethelmearc College of
Arms;
Greetings from the Heronter Heralds, a division of the Heraldic Flying
Circus and Moving Company, Southwest.
Herewith, our commentary on AE96, dated June 1, 2006.
1. Arnra Gr¡marskona New Name, New Device
"Sable, a bear rampant contourny and on a chief engrailed argent,
three bear's pawprints purpure."
Name documentation looks good. No conflicts found.
2. Calylvorr Ine Skylycorne Resubmitted Name,
The submitter is aware that her choice of name is "rather startling"
and
non-standard. For her, this is part of the attraction.
Resubmitted Device (kingdom level)
"Per pale argent and sable, two griffins sejant respectant, forepaws
raised,
counterchanged."
No conflicts found.
3. Duncan von Halstern Change of Name
Duncan -- Withycombe, pg.96, (s.n. Duncan) "Duncan (m.): From Old Irish
Dunecan, with a double suffix -ec + -an. It is a hypocoristic
form from
Old Irish Dun-chadh 'brown warrior'. The name of two early
Scottish kings,
Duncan I 1034-40, Duncan II 1094-95, it has always been a fairly common
name in Scotland, but has not been adopted in England as other Scottish
names have been."
von Halstern -- We wrote to Julia Eastern Crown.

Laurel LoAR (Sept. 2004) Sichelgaita von Halstern
http://www.sca.org/heraldry/loar/2004/09/04-09lar.html
"no documentation was provided and none found that Halsstern is a
reasonable
variant of the German placename Halstern or that it followed patterns
of
German placename construction. In addition, the preposition in period
German locative bynames appear in lowercase."
If Laurel considers "von Halstern" to be a German locative, that's good
enough for us. We note that the name is a given Scottish name and
a
German surname, this is one weirdness. We're assuming that the
individual
is actually a member of Haus von Halstern. If he is not, you
should point
out to him that while the name is registerable, most people will assume
he's
a member of the household.

5. Gr¡marr Bjarnarson New Name, New Device
"Sable, a bear's head caboshed and on a chief Or three fleurs-de-lys
vert."
Name documentation looks good. No conflicts found.
"Purpure, on a pile embattled argent, a raven Volant bendwise sinister
head to base sable."
No conflicts found. It's not "volant bendwise sinister head to
base", it's
"stooping" and thus no difference from a hawk stooping sable. Is
there a
reason the submitter specifically wants a raven in that pose and not a
hawk?
