Æthelmearc Letter of Report Æ96
July 20, 2006 (AS 41)

Greetings from Garnet and Cornelian,

We would very much like to thank those who commented on these items: Aryanhwy merch Catmael, The Heronter Heralds Commenting Group, and Myfanwy ferch Rhiannon!

The items accepted on this letter have been forwarded to Laurel for further consideration, where we anticipate they will be decided on in November 2006.

1.  Andreas Jäger – New Name, New Device accepted

Argent, a bear sejant erect sable and on a chief rayonny enarched gules a lightning bolt fesswise argent.

This item was pended on LoR AE95.

Commenters had noted a conflict with with <Enderlin Jäger>, item #4 on the West's 24 May 2006 ELoI.  <Enderlin> is a diminutive of <Andreas> in German.  Since Enderlin's name isn't registered yet, this could not be returned for conflict. The item was pended to allow further consultation with the submitter.

We have discussed the matter with the submitter, who prefers to continue with the submission as is. The submitter is considering adding the locative <von Holstein>, but is not willing to allow major changes at this time. If necessary, he prefers to add the locative under a later resubmission.

2.  Arnþóra Grímarskona – New Name and Device accepted.

Sable, a bear rampant contourny and on a chief engrailed argent, three bear's pawprints purpure.

3.  Calylvorr Ine Skylycorne – Resubmitted Name and Device accepted.

Per pale argent and sable, two griffins sejant respectant, each with one forepaw raised, counterchanged.

During commentary, the question was raised as to whether the primary charges, as emblazoned, are actually in chief. We defer to Wreath’s judgement.

4.  Duncan von Halstern – Change of Name accepted.

5. Gaston de Barre – Change of Device accepted.

Per pale gules and sable, a tyger rampant within a bordure argent.

6.  Grímarr Bjarnarson – New Name and Device accepted.

Sable, a bear's head caboshed and on a chief Or three fleurs-de-lys vert.

Commenters noted that the bear, as emblazoned, should probably be reblazoned “Or, marked sable.” After consultation with the submitter, the device has been redrawn with less interior striping.

7.  Kiara Kavanagh – Name and Device returned

Argent, a rose purpure barbed vert seeded Or, in chief three crosses flory azure.

This item was pended on LoR AE95.

As noted on our Letter of Report AE95, the documentation source given by the submitter for the given name is not adequately reliable as a scholarly source. Commenters found no acceptable documentation for the submitted given name, which appears to be a modern Anglicization of the Old/Middle Irish form <Ciar>. The byname appears to be an Anglicization of the Early Modern Irish descriptive byname, <Cáomhanach>. Although the submitter has requested authenticity for “Celtic,” she does not allow the major changes necessary to make this Anglicized name authentic to the Gaelic language.

Because this will be the second return to this submitter, the item was pended to allow further direct consultation. The submitter is currently preparing another resubmission with our assistance, which should appear on our ILoI of September 2006

Without an accompanying name submission, we are forced to return this device at this time, which appears to be otherwise acceptable.

8.  Sabina de Lyons –Resubmitted Household Badge: House Laughing Fox returned

(Fieldless) A fox passant inverted gules.

Commenters found several rulings barring the registration of  inverted animals, other than as part of a group in annulo. However, the Heronter Heralds referred us to Slater, The Complete Book of Heraldry, p. 221, which includes an image from the Banderia Prutenorum, a 15th century manuscript documenting 56 war banners captured from the Teutonic knights at their loss of the battle of Tannenberg in 1410. Because this manuscript presented some confusion as to the orientation on the page of the armory, and also includes devices with unusual orientations, this item was pended to allow further examination of the source.

Upon examination, we find that there are three pieces of armory in the manuscript depicting animals in an unusual combination of posture and orientation, including the device pictured in Slater. In all cases, the banners themselves are shown in the manuscript with the hoist edge at the top of the page. Since the hoist edge on a banner (as opposed to a gonfalon) runs along the side of the device, all of the armory in the manuscript is shown rotated 90 degrees. Therefore, the charges which appear to be completely inverted are actually rotated 90 degrees on a banner that is itself rotated 90 degrees. The Academy of Saint Gabriel article “Banners from the Battle of Tannenberg” (WWW: Thomas Barnes, 2002) [URL: http://www.s-gabriel.org/heraldry/lothar/tannenberg.html], provides blazons of the armory. Two of the three devices to be considered are blazoned as “statant palewise”; the other as “courant palewise”.

In all three of these cases, the normal orientation of the posture has been rotated by only 90 degrees, rather than completely inverted. This, combined with prior SCA precedent prohibiting inverted animals, leads us to conclude that the badge, as submitted, is unregisterable and must therefore be returned.

Should the submitter wish to submit an animal either statant palewise or courant palewise, she should know that both would possibly be considered visually equivalent to rampant.

9.  Skalla-Valgarðr Gunnarsson – Resubmitted Badge returned

Purpure, on a pile embattled argent, a raven Volant bendwise sinister head to base sable.

This conflicts with William de Lacy of Sherborne: Purpure, on a pile raguly argent a gauntlet aversant gules. [08/83 via Ansteorra]
